History: Owl Habitats constructed by an Earlier Eagle Project on The Lemoore Naval Air Station had been attacked by local wild dogs. The dogs were able to dig out sone of the burried boxes and kill the owls. Normally the burrow-boxes are under a thick layer of soil. As the pictures indicate, dogs were able to uncover and attack the burrow of this site. This project was to create several "armored burrows" which the Burrowing Owls could move into. Esentially keeping these pesky terrorists from damaging the military base!

Team loading equipment construction equipment.

This is the layout of a double burrow. Sprinkler control boxes are use. Holes are cut into the side and a flexible tube is placed in it which will serve as an entrance for the owls. An cinder block is used to hold the tube in place and be the first point of resistance for dog attack.

A heavy layer of soil is put over the entire site to create the burrow and provide insulation from cold and warm conditions.

Wire mesh is now fitted over the covered burrow. This will be the primary deterant to animal attacks.

Additional soil is placed over the wire to complete the construction. A post has bee placed to mark the site when field mowing is in the area and to provide a roost for the owls.

One of the Burrowing Owl habitats was constructed as a triple. This allows multiple occupant situations.
This is the work team posing behind a completed burrow.
