Originally used as a mariners' knot to tie the bow line of a boat to to a mooring post. It is the primary knot used in river and vertical-air rescues when specialized harneses are not available. The loop is passedover the individual's head and shoulders with the lift above the chest. It is not slip knot. Very dependable.
