A Second Oddessy to Reno

Day 2: Saturday, October 10, 1998

Claire, from Washington, and Gloria, from Southern California, as were several other people, were in Reno for makeovers at of The Hidden Woman there. Yours truly also received a mini-makeover as well! This picture shows the three of us afterwards.

Gloria, Claire, and Janis ready for the show!

After the makeovers, we went to a buffet and Pre-Halloween Drag Show at 1099, a local gay bar along with Carly, of The Hidden Woman, who was to be a featured performer. I put my essentials, including makeup, money, and drivers' license, into a small gold purse, which matched my the gold accessories and shoes. In addition to the blue dress that I wore, I carried my black herringbone jacket with me for later, as it was forecast to get down to 38 degrees that night. I put both the single-use camera and my SLR camera and flash into my white purse, which I used as a substitute camera bag.

I rode with a new friend, Diane, who had come from elsewhere in Nevada. When we arrived at the bar it was fairly crowded already. At first, music videos were being shown on the television monitors there, followed by a video from the previous week's spectacular drag show which had been given at a local hotel.

The buffet supper was announced, which featured antipasto, lasagna, and short ribs spread out on the pool table in an adjacent room. I had a small serving of lasagna, and some carrot sticks, and ate them while standing at a small table, watching the video.

Then the show began. I moved to the back of the room, near the sound booth and dresssing room, mainly to get away as much as I could from all of the cigarette smoke in the room. The opening act was the reigning Emperor of the Court, dressed in a Dracula costume. Several other acts followed, with the performers in fantistic outfits. I particularly noted two ladies in dresses, one red and one blue, with large sequins, and imagined what those would cost!

The Carly was announced as the next performer. I moved, carrying both cameras, to near the stage, and took several pictures of her while she was performing and receiving dollars from people as tips.

After the show, we stayed and socialized for a while, and I took some pictures of my friends at the bar. Then some of us decided to go to Visions, an "alternative" club, which features disco dancing and welcomes people of all lifestyles. We paid the small cover charge, and checked our coats at the door. Many of the earlier group of performers and audience from 1099 were there as well.

There was non-stop dancing on the disco floor. I was wearing three-inch heels, and the shoes were pinching my feet, so I decided not to dance myself. I acted as "purse watcher" as some of the people that I knew went dancing themselves. At one point I wanted to go to the restroom, as I had been drinking bottles of non-alcoholic beer, but the line to the ladies' room was fairly long, and had both men and women in it!

While in the club, my friend had met another friend from my previous trip and California Dreamin', whom I hadn't recognized since she had cut her hair into a fairly short style. She, Diane, and I decided to go for coffee and breakfast at one of the many all-night restaurants that she knew. I went with Diane in her car to her motel, which was near mine, used the restroom in her room, and the three of us went in the other friend's car to the restaurant. We ate, chatted, and got to know each other, and were finally dropped off at our respective motels. I got undressed, took off my makeup, set my portable clock radio for 10:00 a.m. got to sleep at around 5:00 a.m. It had been yet another marvelous day!
