Herbert Russell Lukeman, Canso
Captain Herbert Russell Lukeman, 82, Canso,
died Sat Nov 29 1986 in St Martha's Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Canso, he
was a son of the late James and Adelia (Grover) Lukeman.
In his youth,
Captain Lukeman, served as a seaman on the steamer, Marjorie V,
sailing to
ports in Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania.
After several years in the
United States,
he returned to his home in Canso to assume the Captain's
position
with the Merchant Marines on the SS Surf, SS O'wera, the S S Ulna
and the MV Fairmorse, ships that travelled daily from Canso to Mulgrave,
transporting both passengers and freight.
Following discontinuation of this
service,
he was employed by the Dept of Fisheries, as first Mate
on the S S
Chebucto, a rescue, search and patrol vessel.
He held this position until
his retirement in 1970.
He is survived by his wife, the former Madonna
Pettipas,
five daughters, Marion (Mrs Keith Froats) Kingston Ont; Janice
(Mrs Herman Koerner) Halifax;
Jean (Mrs Kelvin Petis) Moncton; Joan (Mrs
Terry Stevenson) Halifax;
Mrs Sheila Lumsden, Canso; two sisters, Mrs Eva
MacKinon,
and Margaret (Mrs Reginald Horton) of Antigonish;
two brothers,
Tom, Antigonish; Jim, Point Edward;
15 grandchildren and 5 great
grandchildren .
After resting at the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home,
funeral mass was celebrated
at the Star of the Sea Church by Rev Angus
MacDougall.
Interment was in the Parish Cemetery.
