Well Known Miner Dies
Guysboro - Trueman G. Hirschfield, 65, Halifax,
the last surviving rescue
miner involved in the 1936 Moose River Mine disaster,
died Friday at his
home.
Born in Goldenville, Guysborough County, he was the son of
the late
George and Honor Hirschfield.
Mr. Hirschfield , a hardrock miner,
was the first man to reach three
trapped gold miners
at the bottom of the Moose River mine.
The 10-day entombment of the three men and the valiant rescue efforts
by
Mr. Hirschfield and a crew of rescuers
drew world attention to the
province.
Following the event, Mr. Hirschfield returned
to mining at Oldham, 27
miles from Halifax, where he became foreman
of the mine until 1942. He later
became
a pipefitter at the Halifax Shipyards.
He is survived by his wife Caroline( Sweet);
one daughter, Honor(Mrs.
Harry MacGrath), Cortland, B.C.;
three sons, Arthur, Kevin, both of Garson,
Ont;
Trueman, of Halifax; one brother, Marland, Winchester, Mass;
one
sister, Annie(Mrs. A. Murphy), Worcester, Mass;
and 18 grandchildren.
The remains are at the Halifax Funeral Home,
Quinpool Road, where funeral
service will be held
Monday at 3:30pm , Rev. R.D. MacLean will officiate.
