Oldest practising lawyer dies
GRANT, C. Wilkie, Q.C. -
78, in Guysborough, died Wednesday in
Guysborough Memorial Hospital.
Born in Beaver Mountain, Antigonish County,
he was a son of the late
Norman and Margaret (Taylor) Grant.
He was educated in local schools and at
Saint Francis Xavier University,
Antigonish.
He graduated from Dalhousie Law School and was called to the bar in 1937
At the time of his death, he was the oldest practising lawyer in Nova Scotia.
After employment with the Attorney General's Department
and in
New Glasgow, he established a law office in Guysborough in 1939.
In addition to his legal practice, he was a municipal clerk and secretary of the school board for many years.
He was a member and long-time elder of Wesley United Church, Guysborough.
He was a charter member of Guysborough Lions Club and served for 40 years as member and chairman of Guysborough Memorial Hospital Board.
He is survived by his wife, the former Jean Gardner,
a daughter, Mrs.
Margaret Hildebrand, Calgary;
three sons;
George, James, both of
Guysborough;
John, Enfield;
a sister,
Jean, (Mrs. Cecil Finlayson), Merigomish;
seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Scott, a grandson, Norman.
The body is in Dennis Haverstock's Funeral Home, Guysborough,
Visiting 2-9 p.m. today.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Friday in Wesley United Church, Rev. Murray Favier officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Norman Grant Scholarship, Guysborough Memorial High School, or Guysborough Memorial Hospital.
