JOHN AITKEN MORRISON
One of Guysborough County's oldest, well-known residents,
John Aitken Morrison, passed away peacefully Sunday evening,
April 26, 1959 at the Fullerton Nursing Home,
Lyons Brook, Pictou County. He was in his 98th year.
Mr. Morrison was born in Dundee, Scotland
December 14, 1861. As a young boy,
he served with the British Post Office, both in Dundee and in Glasgow.
Later, he joined the Commercial Cable Company and,
in 1885, transferred in its foreign service
to Hazel Hill in Nova Scotia. He was retired in 1926.
Mr. Morrison had been warden at All Saints' Church,
Canso at one time. He was County Councillor
and Warden for many years. He was a president of the
Canso Board of Trade from which he received a testimonial
for his services. He was a former editor
of the Canso Breeze, now incorporated in the Guysborough County Advocate.
Mr. Morrison was the author of "A History of the Highland Clans"
and "Down Guysborough Way". In 1958 the Canadian Authors' Association
honoured him with a life membership.
During his almost three quarters of a century
lived in Guysborough County, Mr. Morrison
maintained an active interest in all civic affairs.
His wife, Margaret Simpson of Glasgow, Scotland
predeceased him in 1936. Mr. Morrison is survived by
one daughter, Mona (Mrs. H.A. Flanders), Boston;
three sons , Sholto, Guysborough; Gilbert, Halifax; and John,
Brooklyn, New York; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Smith, Hazel Hill;
six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral service in Christ Church, Guysborough
was conducted by the Rev. D.H. Sherrin
Tuesday afternoon, April 28. Organist was Mrs. A. Brymer.
Pall bearers were H.C. Morrison, W.C. Francheville,
W.W. Jones, I.G. Drysdale, H.P. Hadley and C. Payne.
The remains were then forwarded to All Saints' Church, Canso
where the Rev. R. Tuck officiated.
Organist was Miss E. Hambling. The hymn sung at both services
was "Breathe On Me, Breath of God", a favourite of the deceased.
Pall bearers were C. Holness, R.E. Mead, J. Burton,
H.A. McLaughlin, H.H. Rattray and S. Smith.
Interment was in All Saints' Cemetery, Canso.
