Bessie Hulme (Morrison) Smith

Mrs. Bessie Smith, 94, died at the Fullerton Rest Home,
Lyons Brook, Pictou County May 09, 1967.

Born April 09, 1873 in Dundee, Scotland,
she was the eldest daughter of John Morrison and Margaret S. Aitken Morrison.
She married Tom Smith who died in 1899.
Afterwards, she emigrated to Nova Scotia
to be closer to her only brother John A. Morrison.

In the village of Hazel Hill, Mrs. Smith was postmistress
from 1911 to 1953, a total of 42 years.
This period included the two great world wars of 1914-1918 and 1939-1945.
The Commercial Cable Company was located in Hazel Hill,
accounting for much vital trans-Atlantic communication;
the post office was an important facility to the cable staff.
In 1953 Mrs. Smith was awarded the Coronation medal
for outstanding service in her capacity as postmistress.

Affectionately known as "Aunt Bessie",
Mrs. Smith is survived by three nephews,
Sholto Morrison, Guysborough; Gilbert Morrison, Halifax;
John Morrison, New York; one niece Mrs. Mona Flanders, Guysborough;
and a number of grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Funeral service was held at All Saints Church, Canso,
Rev. D.H. Sherren officiating.
Interment was in the church cemetery.
