Cariboo - A well-known County teacher, John Markie, 38,
of Westville,
and his 75-year-old uncle,
John MacPherson of Erinville, Guysboro Co., were
killed instantly
in a two-car collision here on Thursday night.
Mr. Markie was well-known for his association with
the New Democratic
Party in this area,
having run as a candidate in Pictou Centre provincially,
in 1967.
He was also a delegate to the founding convention
of the NDP
Association in Ottawa in 1961.
The two men were visiting relatives in the Cariboo area
and were about
to cross the new Ferry Road here
when a 1960 Chrysler, operated by Aldon
Baker, former of Montague, P.E.I.,
now of Trenton, struck the side of the
MacPherson vehicle.
Baker was headed for the ferry wharf to pick up his wife,
who had
come across from P.E.I.
He was not injured in the accident.
The impact of the crash spun the Volkswagen around
several times on
the highway, and knocked both occupants
out of the vehicle, RCMP said both
men were dead
when they arrived at the scene.
Both vehicles were extensively damaged
in the mishap which occured at
approximately 6:15 on Thursday evening.
The accident was investigated by the New Glasgow RCMP Highway Patrol.
Mr. Markie was born in Erinville , Guysboro Co.,
and went to
Stellarton as a young boy
with his family where he received his early
education.
He finished his high school education in Westville and entered
St. FX University
where he received his BA and BEd. degrees.
Being very active in collage sports, he maintained this interest
in
private life and was supervisor of minor sports in Stellarton
over the
years.
Recently he was appointed
to the Extension Department of St. FX
University to work
in the field of housing in Pictou County, in conjunction
with
the Nova Scotia Housing Commission.
Along with being named the founder
and most ardent supporter of the
NDP party in this area
he was also principal of the Junior High School in
Trenton
and president of the East Pictou Local of the NSTU,
as well as
executive member of the same organization.
Besides his wife, the former Thelma MacDonald of Westville,
he is
survived by two children;
his mother, Mrs. Andrew Markie, Westville; three
sisters,
Catherine (Mrs. Dan Maloney) and Annie (Mrs.Fred Doucette), both of
Westville,
and Mary in Halifax.
He was predeceased by his father
and two brothers, Thomas, during the
Second World War, and James.

John MacPherson
Mr. MacPherson was born in Erinville
and had operated a sawmill there
for a number of years.
For the last few years he operated woodlots in the
same area.
Besides his wife and one daughter,
he is survived by three sisters,
Margaret (Mrs.Andrew Markje), Belle (Mrs. Clem MacIssac),
Erinville, Guys.
Co., and Mrs. Catherine O'Leary, Halifax,
also one brother, Dan in
Erinville.
The remains of both victims will rest
at the Eagles Funeral Home with
Mr. MacPherson's remains
to be transferred to Erinville for burial.
