Isaac J. Whitman

Canso: Isaac J. Whitman, Canso, July 5,
one of Canso's oldest citizens passed away on Sunday afternoon second inst.,
in the person of Isaac J. Whitman at the age of 72 years.
Mr. Whitman had been in failing health for some time past
and had a year or more ago practically retired from business
which was taken over by his son Harry.
In early life Mr Whitman "followed the sea" to some extent,
and as a young man was in the employ of the late Alfred W. Hart
from which he developed a business on his own account.
For some years he specialized in the millinery business
but later erected the splendid new store now occupied by I. J. Whitman & Son
where he conducted a general business until his retirement referred to above.
The deceased married in early life Miss Carrie Morrison,
sister of the late R.H. Morrison of Guysborough
who with one son Harry and 2 daughters Mrs Garnet Birmingham of Hartland N.B.
and Mrs Donald Stewart of New Glasgow
mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon
with burial at the Anglican cemetery where a family lot is owned.
The funeral service was conducted by Rev. L. E. G. Davies
of the Methodist Church of which the deceased was a member
and Rev. R. M. Leigh of the Anglican Church.
