Active community worker Lester V. MacDonald dies
SHERBROOKE - Lester Vincent MacDonald, 86, of this community,
died Monday in St. Mary's
Memorial Hospital, Sherbrooke.
Born in Sherbrooke,
he was a son of the late William H. and Helen A. (Hattie) MacDonald.
He was a veteran of the First World War, serving in the Royal Flying Corps.
Mr. MacDonald was the last surviving charter member of Branch 56, Royal Canadian Legion,
Sherbrooke.
He was superintendent of Sunday schools for many years;
an elder of St. John's United Church,
Sherbrooke.
He was also a member of the Masonic Order for 64 years;
and past master of Queen's
Lodge, No. 34.
He served as district deputy, grand master for Antigonish-Guysboro.
A former president of the St. Mary's Progressive Conservative Association for 20 years,
he
served as the first chairman of the Sherbrooke Village Restoration Commission.
Mr. MacDonald was a stipendiary magistrate in the district for a period of eight years.
He was engaged in the mechanical trade for most of his life time;
was active in World War II as
Shop steward,
and was secretary of the affiliated Dockyard Trade and Labor Council.
Surviving besides his wife, the former Irvis Mae Pryde;
are a daughter Romayne (Mrrs. John
Ross) of Toronto;
and a son, Vance, Halifax;
seven grandchildren.
Also surviving are
two brothers, John A., Ottawa; Bruce W., Truro.
He was predeceased by two sons, infant, Glen Gary; and Wayne Keith;
a brother, Lyall, and two
sisters, Janet (Mrs. J.B. MacHattie); Lillian (Mrs. M.D. MacMartin).
His remains will rest at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, Stillwater, Guysboro County,
with visiting
After 7 o'clock this evening.
Funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 o'clock in St. John's United Church, Sherbrooke.
Interment will be in the Riverside cemetery.
