Funeral Of Arne Sumppi Held At Sherbrooke
SHERBROOKE - Arne Sumppi died at St. Mary's Memorial Hospital on Tuesday morning having been admitted Sunday afternoon. He was 59.
Mr. Sumppi was born in Helsingforth, Finland
and came to Canada and settled in Sherbrooke in 1936.
He served overseas in the Second World War and
after being wounded in the Battle of the Rhine in Germany, was sent home.
He is survived by his wife Flossie (nee Clooney), one step-daughter, Elva (Mrs. Douglas Bennett) of Sherbrooke and a sister, Marta, in Finland.
The funeral was held on Wednesday from St. James Presbyterian Church and was conducted by the pastor, I. Frank Canning, with interment in Riverside Cemetery.
Sherbrooke Branch, Canadian Legion, attended the funeral in a body and conducted their committal service at the graveside.
Pallbearers were Bernard Rudolph, Little Liscomb; Messrs, David Michaud, Bryce Smith, Frank Jordan, Lew Beaver and Samuel Pye, all of Sherbrooke.
Mr. Sumppi was a member of the Presbyterian Church and of the Canadian Legion, Sherbrooke Branch.
