HAYTER, LORNE RONALD – 92,
Halifax and Port Bickerton, Lorne’s journey through life
came to an end on September 22, 1998. Born in Halifax
on October 3, 1906, Lorne was the son of the late
Rachelle (McDonald) Hayter and Capt. John William Hayter.
He was predeceased by his only son, Ronald Frederick Hayter;
son-in-law, Harvey (Moose) Mills; sisters, Melissa
(wife of Maj. Albert J. Butler), St. John’s, Nfld;
Rachelle (Mrs. Reginald Bremmer), who was a casualty of
The Halifax Explosion; Mary (Mrs. John Brennan), Hanson,Mass.
Predeceased by four brothers, his twin, Frank, Halifax; William, Detroit;
John, Halifax, and Fred, Halifax. Beloved husband and father,
he is survived by his best friend and wife of 70 years, Nancy (Taylor)
and his only daughter, Joyce (Mrs. Harvey M. Mills), Halifax and Port Bickerton.
His daughter-in-law, Barbara (Mrs. Ronald Hayter), Halifax;
grandchildren, Mark Hayter and Helen Hayter, Montreal;
Deborah (Mrs. Mark Ryyppo), Vancouver, Rhonda (Mrs. Stephen Bochicchio),
Los Angeles; Nancy (Mrs. Marcel Villeneuve), Oromocto, N.B.,
Jayne (Mrs. Jean-Luc deVillers), Halifax; Ronald F. Mills, Halifax.
There are seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Lorne was well known by the youth of Halifax with whom he worked
under the auspices of Halifax Recreation. He founded and
instructed the North End Gymnasts and taught tap dancing
and ballroom dancing to large groups of boys and girls
for more than 20 years. These clubs performed at benefits and athletic functions
throughout the city. Lorne worked as a mechanic
and heavy equipment operator with the Department of Highways
in Fairview and Sydney River. His war work consisted
of employment on the Canadian national ammunition scow in Bedford
and the Canadian national garage in Halifax.
He worked for the Halifax City School Board and retired from
the City of Halifax in 1971. Lorne was a member of
St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Halifax and St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Port Bickerton.
He belonged to Athol Lodge of the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons.
He was an active member of Northwood Drama Club.
Lorne will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
Funeral service was Saturday, Septemeber 26, at St. Paul’s Anglican Church,
Rev. John Smith officiated. Burial followed in St. Paul’s Church Cemetary.
