Federal Department of Fisheries Representative Dies Suddenly

Matthew McGrath Manson,
Canadian Department of Fisheries representative for St. Mary’s Municipality,
Guysborough County died suddenly at Denver November 13
at the age of 57. Son of the late Francis G. Manson and Agnes (McGrath) Manson
he was born in Sherbrooke on May 30,1899.

While serving as a Canadian Infantryman in World War One,
he was wounded at Arras, France.
Following demobilization Mr. Manson lived for a number of years in Meridan, Connecticut.
Later he returned to Sherbrooke to become fisheries inspector for Saint Mary’s
and in 1950 was advanced to the protection branch.
During World War Two he was a Platoon Commander
in the 2nd battalion, Pictou Highlanders of the Reserve Army.

Two of his prized associations were with St. James Presbyterian Church
where he served as an elder,
and the Sherbrooke Branch of the Canadian Legion.

Surviving are his widow, Florence Winnifred,
daughter of the late Mr. J.T. Anderson and Mrs. Anderson of Boylston ,
three children, Natalie, Francis and Winnifred, all at home;
two sisters, Nellie (Mrs. C.T. Ritchie) of Dartmouth;
Katherine (Mrs. John a. Macdonald), Ottawa,
and a brother, Ernest in Halifax.

Following a private service at the Manson home,
funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from St. James Presbyterian Church.
The Pastor Rev. W.E. Knox officiated assisted by Rev. Lloyd Salsman
and Rev. William Moore also Rev. William Reid,
St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow.

St. James Presbyterian Church was filled and many waited outside
testifying to the high place he occupied in the hearts of the people.
Interment was at Riverside Cemetery with officers of the Canadian Legion
conducting the service there and concluding with
the sounding of the Last Post.

Pall bearers were Harvey Taylor, Bickerton; William Sears, Stillwater,
Harold Whidden, Frank Jordan, Russell Cameron and Malcolm Sponangle.
