Edgar Morse Hewitt

Antigonish, July 6 -
In the death of Edgar Morse Hewitt,
prominent merchant of Bickerton West,
that community and Guysboro county
lost one of its leading citizens.
Mr. Hewitt passed away June 21st, 1935,
following an illness of only four days.
He was 44 years old.
Son of Mrs. and the late Mr. James Hewitt,
he was born at Port Hilford. Following five years
as purser on steamships plying between Nova Scotia
and the Magdalene Islands, he engaged for a time
in business in Bridgewater. Returning to his native county
nine years ago, he became manager of the branch store
at Bickerton West of S.R. Giffin and Sons, Goldboro.
A year and a half ago, Mr. Hewitt bought out the busines,
which included besides the general store, the buying and marketing of fish.
By his integrity, honorable business relations, and good citizenship
in every respect, he enjoyed the esteem and confidence of all who knew him.
He was a councillor in the Municpality of St. Mary's,
a faithful member of the Baptist Church, a member of the
Mulgrave Masonic Lodge, A.F. and A.M., and of the Royal Arch Lodge, Pictou,
besides being an Odd Fellow. Surviving are his widow,
Annie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Reid, Port Hilford;
two children, James and Helen; a sister, Mrs. M.H. Fleming,
of the English Department of Halifax Academy, Halifax;
one brother, Fred Hewitt, Port Hilford, and an uncle,
John Suttis, of Sherbrooke. The funeral on June 23rd,
was one of the largest ever held in the community,
people coming from far and near to render homage.
The service was conducted by Mr. Herman McGrath,
Wine Harbor, assisted by Mr. Albert Piercy, of the Anglican Church,
and Mr. Wm. Freeman, of the Kingston College.
Interment was at Cherry Hill Cemetery, Port Hilford.
