OLDEST RESIDENT OF STILLWATER PASSES AWAY

SHERBROOKE - Charles Whidden, 91,
oldest resident of Stillwater, died on Saturday, March 6,
at St. Mary's Memorial Hospital at Sherbrooke after an illness
of less than three weeks. This was the only time he had ever been hospitalized.
He was born in Waternish the son of Timothy and Sarah (Smith) Whidden.
With the exception of a few years his entire life was spent
in Waternish and Stillwater. His wife predeceased him only three weeks ago.
Surviving are four sons, Maurice of Halifax, Fred of Goderich, Ont.,
and Basil and Cecil, both of Stillwater; two daughters,
Phyllis (Mrs. Morris Verge) of Halifax and Ethel (Mrs. Thomas MacIntosh) of Stillwater;
and a number of grandchildren. A son Gordon predeceased him a number of years ago.
Charles Whidden was one of a family of seven brothers and three sisters,
Will, Robert, John, Arch, Marshall, Simeon and Hugh;
sisters, Mary Jane (Mrs. Isaac Demmons), Janet (Mrs. Alex H. MacDonald)
and Elizabeth Ann. The funeral was conducted on March 8
from the Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Mr. I.F. Canning brought a comforting message to the family.
The choir sang "Good Night and Good Morning", "Safe in the Arms of Jesus",
and "Unto the Hills," favorites of the deceased. Pallbearers were
Lawrence and Ellsworth Demmons, Hugh MacDonald and Harold Whidden,
nephews and Lester MacKeen and Alexander MacDonald, former neighbors of the deceased.
Interment was in the Waternish Cemetery.
