ALEXANDER W. REID

Saturday at his residence at Port Hilford,
in the 74th year of his age,
after a long and painful illness borne with christian fortitude,
passed to his final reward, Alexander W. Reid,
leaving immediate relatives to mourn his loss;
the widow, nee Miss Belle Polson, of Goshen;
three brothers and five sisters; Captain Abner Reid,
Isaacs Harbor; Captain Robert Reid, merchant, and David Reid,
Esq., at Port Hilford; Mrs. J.H. McMillan,
Sherbrooke; Mrs. Charles Giffin, Isaacs Harbor; Mrs. Henry Tomlinson,
Lynn, Mass., Mrs. Robert Harding, Boston,Mass.,
and Mrs. Edward Solaris, California.
The vast concourse assembled at the funeral from his residence
this afternoon attested the high esteem borne for him
throughout his entire county. A stalwart has gone from among us.
Shall we see his like again. The Rev. William Mollay
of South Locaber assisted by Mr. McGrath very feelingly
conducted the devotional services. The musical programme
was under the guidance of the choir of St. James' Presbyterian church, Sherbrooke.
Of one of our pioneer families, Mr. Reid's circle of aquaintances
and friends included a large portion of our provincial population,
who will all join from the heart in condolences to his bereaved relatives.
Mr. Reid retired from the general mercantile business he carried on
for years at Port Hilford, about 15 years ago.
A Baptist in religion, he was always a staunch pillar of
that denomination, kindly, just and true.
In politics he was an ardent Liberal, for years
being president of the Liberal Association of the Municipality
of St. Mary's and party Secretary of his home district.
For some years he held the position
of Superintendent of Fisheries for this municipality
and for years was post master at Hilford.
