Narrator: The friends walked down the echoing hallway towards their destination. They didn't know what to expect, but that didn't surprise them. They hadn't known what to expect from the very beginning. That was then, and this is now. You see, the time that their lives so drastically changed was not so long ago. This is the tale of 4 teenagers. Normal, for their time, until the ancient myth began and changed their lives forever. Here is their story.
The Keepers of Xion (part one, told through the eyes of Jewels Nebula)
I had been sitting in my room, starring out a starry window. I lived in a space colony, a huge, rotating wheel in space. When first visiting my home from earth, it would seem odd, because everything is tipped upward instead of in. There is no sky, only metal sheets patch worked together in a never-ending hoop. As I looked out my window, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. It gradually came nearer to my window, as if it was searching for me. I didn't know exactly what to do. I drew nearer until it was right beside my window. It was a star. Not the kind of star that you hear of in science class or see in the night sky from earth, but a hollow crystal shaped like a star. It puzzled me to look at. It was completely transparent, making it a wonder that I had seen it in the first place. Inside, there were a number of things whirling around I could make out turquoise beads of water splashing against flower petals and leaves. An eerie gray light weaved itself in between things as a bright red flame flickered against the mixture. It was truly a sight to see, though an incredibly odd one. As I stared at the star, it began to flicker and soon after I found I couldn't move. I stared on, not knowing what I should be doing or what to expect. As I watched, the eerie gray, the flames, and the flowers and leaves all vanished to leave the water. It splashed around the inside of the star as if it wanted to be released. My eyes widened as I could feel a tingling begin in my heart and surge out to my fingers and toes. My eyes suddenly felt icy, and I saw in my window reflection that they had begun to glow with icy blue light. It brightened and brightened until the storm in the crystal exploded into my window and I felt it slam into me like a block of ice. The blue light dimmed and dimmed until I was left with a cold feeling in my heart. After a moment or two, the crystal was gone, but the odd feeling from within me remained. I looked to my window and saw that it hadn't even broken. Forcing myself up, I looked at my image in the mirror. I looked normal still, at least I could say that. My hair was still blonde, my eyes still green-blue, my skin still its creamy color.
"I wonder what that was." I said, still in awe over the whole thing. I closed my eyes, trying to sort out what had happened. I began to feel nervous, and a sudden burst or that icy cold feeling made my snap my eyes open in shock. I lifted my head to meet my face in the mirror, but it wasn't there. It was being covered by frost. I gasped. This was all way too confusing. But that was just the beginning. I heard in the news, through rumors, and through various other sources of three kids from earth or colonies that has received the powers of the messager. Things didn't make sense, but I wanted to find those other kids so they might tell me what was going on and how they had come across their "sixth senses". I noticed a woman talking about the messager, and walked up to her.
"Excuse me miss," I said. "But do you know anything about this messager?" She stood still for a second, then sharply whirled around, startling me. I felt a flare of ice and water inside my heart and hoped she hadn't caught the sudden color flare of my eyes. Of course, she had. She quickly looked me over and nodded to the woman she was talking to, who promptly left.
"Come with me." She said. I didn't really have a choice, her knowing of my hidden power, so I followed, forgetting my curfew was up in 10 minutes. After a block of walking, we reached a mansion. She opened the large doors and motioned for me to enter.
"My name is Karla, I research prothecies and myths at the college in town." she answered. I nodded, and shakily replied her.
"I'm Jewels, and I guess I'm part of one of those myths." I answered, hoping I didn't sound snotty.
"You have powers over water and ice, right?" Karla asked. I slowly nodded.
"I knew that the prothecy would eventually kick in, sooner or later. How did you receive your power?" I began to tell her of my ordeal as she rapidly typed my every word on a computer.
"That's how it happened to the others also," she said.
"Others?" I asked. I hoped she was talking about the other kids who had received powers from this messager.
"Yes. There are other teenagers who received powers like you did. One boy from earth earned the power over fire, and a girl, also from earth, has powers with plant life. Another boy from a colony that was all but abandoned received powers with magic and illusion." she continued. I slowly nodded.
"Do you know them?" I asked, swallowing hard. She nodded. The creak of a door behind me caused me to become startled again as I spun around, leaving a trail of frost and chilling mist in my path. Out stepped a guy, a little bit taller than me, with a goofy grin on his face. I quickly felt less startled and watched, amazed as the frost and mist vanished from his presence.
"Hey there, I'm Ty," he said. I smiled. He had mahogany brown hair that was long and he had tied into a low ponytail. He was wearing a blue shirt and old jeans with shoes to match. His eyes were brown, but had a tint of red to them that flared when I met his eyes to mine.
"Are you the kid that has powers with fire?" I asked him. He nodded in agreement. He seemed like the kinda kid you could get along with really easily. I could tell we'd be best friends fast.
"I'll introduce you to the other two now Jewels." Karla said. She led me and Ty found a hallway and quickly rapped on a door. A girl stepped out, slightly shorter than I with long strawberry blonde hair that leaned closer to strawberry than blonde did. She had no freckles, and skin a bit darker than my own. Her eyes were deep emerald, bright and curious, and shown like they were finely cut gems. She wore a pastel purple dress that had spring written all over it.
"This is Rose, she has powers with plant life. You can just say her element is earth." Karla explained. I nodded, and Ty greeted her.
"They must've met before I came," I thought to myself. Karla knocked on the door next to Rose's a couple of times, and after a moment or two the knob began to turn. Out stepped a giant. He was wearing gray pants and a shirt to match. His hair spiked like it was naturally that way, but since it was getting a bit long some of the thicker spikes fell over his left eye. It was a very dark brown that was nearly black. The oddest thing about him were his eyes. They were a foggy gray color, but crystal clear, not clouded over like some people's eyes are. His skin was also darker than mine.
"I'm JT." he said in a deep voice, but not too deep, that sounded a bit airy. I gave him another look.
"You have magic and illusion?" I asked. He nodded. We all just stood there for a second, knowing something had happened to each of us but not knowing what to do about it. Karla finally broke the silence.
"I'll show you all to your rooms. They are arranged in a circle, so each has access to a hallway and to a living room that is only accessible through one of the rooms." she said. "I'll be back in a second." she began to walk off, but I grabbed her by the wrist. Clearly, she didn't understand that I couldn't just move in and be happy with it.
"Wait a sec, I can't just stay here, my family'll worry!" I protested. She turned around.
"I'm sorry, but you'll have to put them aside for the time being. The others have, and so must you." with that aid she left. I turned to look at them.
"So all of you have been waiting for the last person, and that's me?" I asked. They nodded. "I'm sorry you had to wait." I replied.
"That's ok, we don't mind, we'll have to get used to it anyway." Rose answered me. I felt mildly better. Karla came back into the hallway carrying several sacks. She handed one to each of us, each sack was exactly the same except for the color. Mine was an ice blue, Rose's was emerald green, Ty's was crimson red, and JT's was foggy gray.
"Ok, these are your clothes. Please put them on and comeback out so I can look you over. There's a room key inside each bag for your separate rooms, and one for entrance to the living room in the middle of the circle. Please hurry!" Karla said as she disappeared into the dark hallway again. We all shrugged and entered out separate rooms. My room was, of course, ice blue. The curtains were lace and reached the ground, and the bed had a canopy over it. There was a dresser on the side, a lamp, an overhead light, and a vanity. I promptly set my things on the dresser and pulled the various items out of the bag. There were two pairs of pj's; one was a nightgown and the other a button up shirt and drawstring pants. Both pairs were satin and that same blue. In fact, everything in the bag was ice blue. There was an outfit that I supposed was the one she wanted to see me in. It consisted of a dress made of satin that had clear sparkles on it. The dress came just above my knees, and had spaghetti straps. As soon as I put it on, the sparkles glittered in the setting sunlight that poured through my new room's windows. Though a bit revealing for my taste, the dress was quite pretty. There were ball gloves to go with it. My shoes looked like foggy glass high heels, but actually proved to be easy to run in and very comfortable. I dug further in the bag to find a cloak. It looked like it was more for purpose than fashion. The cloak was made of a weather-resistant material, but was lined with satin. The sleeves were baggy, and it was a pullover with a pendant at the top that had a picture of a water droplet on it. The pendant proved to be a big button. The waist was a bit form fitting, and the bottom of it wasn't huge, but big enough for easy mobility. I looked at myself in the vanity mirror, nodded, and stepped into the hallway. I was, of course, the last one out. Rose was wearing a beautiful emerald dress that reached her ankles and was slit to mid-thigh on the side. The sleeves fit her perfectly, and she seemed satisfied with it. The dress had no design, it was just pure satin from top to bottom. Her shoes looked like an elves', but looked like they were made of wood. Ty was wearing a crimson shirt and baggy pants. He was wearing red-tinted goggles on his head, and seemed to like them a lot. His shoes were regular red sneakers. JT's outfit was made up of a tight gray shirt and baggy gray pants. His shoes were same as Ty's, but gray (of course). He was wearing his cloak, unlike the rest of us. It seemed to suit him, since he had the powers of magic and illusion, which are pretty mysterious, if you ask me. Karla soon came back from wherever and looked at us. She smiled.
"Good, they all fit. Are they comfortable?" she asked. We all nodded in agreement. She smiled again, then pulled four things out of a black pouch. The first thing was a rosewood wand, which she handed to Rose. The second was a round, ice blue orb, which she handed to me. The third was a red bottle, which she handed to Ty, and the third was a smaller gray pouch, which she handed to JT. "These things will help you along on your missions. Rose, that wand of yours can do many things, but will be able to do more once you gain experience in handling your power. Right now, it can shoot poisonous thorns that will eat away at many different substances, and can shoot out a type of nectar that has healing powers to some extent. Jewels, that orb can shoot shards of ice out at opponents, and is good for boosting your original powers. Ty, that bottle can produce flames and other things fire-related. JT, that pouch holds different potions and powders that have multiple uses. It will never run out, and you can gain more as you become more aquatinted with your power. Everyone be extra careful with your new tools, for they can be dangerous and will cause death to the wrong people if not cared for." she finished. We all slowly nodded. "I will inform you of your first mission next week. Try and get some sleep, and please, do your best to learn your powers thoroughly and to use your tools wisely and effectively." Karla said. She began to walk off, but I shouted after her.
"Wait! We don't know anything about what you've just told us! Can't you at least tell me what or who the messager is?" I yelled.
"All in good time Jewels. For now, just do your part to learn your powers and how to handle that orb. Goodnight." That was all she offered. Not very comforting to me. I could tell it was gonna be a long week.
