DRAWINGS AND PAINTINGS

(unless of course I know you in which case you can copy whatever you want.)

death of venus

This piece was done earlier this year. I got the idea for this piece after studying Botticelli's masterpiece, "The Birth of Venus" I wanted to (in my own amateur way) show what an opposite of this classic painting would look like. In my opinion, the opposite of love would not be hate but indifference and isolation. Hence, the "venus" in my piece is alone, grimmacing with what could only be a "Dear John" letter in her hand. There is no one around to comfort her and she is entirely exposed to the elements, in all their cruel beauty.

Negra Tomasa

Negra Tomasa is a classic Cuba folk song about a sad man who is bewitched by his lover's cooking. He knows she puts mojo in his food but he loves her so much he lets her. He knows she goes out after he's bewitched (read stoned) and cheats on him but again, he loves her.

NEGRA TOMASA

-Ay! -Ay! -Ay!

Esa negra linda que me tiene loco,
que me come poquito a poco.
Esa negra linda que me tiene loco,
que me come poquito a poco.

Estoy tan enamorado de la negra Tomasa
que cuando se va de casa, triste me pongo.
Estoy tan enamorado de mi negra preciosa
que cuando se va de casa triste me pongo.

-Ay! -Ay! -Ay!

Esa negra linda que me tiene loco,
que me come poquito a poco.
Esa negra linda que me tiene loco
que me come poquito a poco

Mi negra linda nunca me dejes,
hay mi negra linda nunca me dejes.

Figure #2

This is one in a series of figure as expression studies I did earlier this year. I do hope to create more but we'll have to see when that'll happen.

Take this heart

"In my hands I hold my heart. Take my heart but be gentle, for it has been weakened by much sadness. Hopefully through the kindness of others it can grow large. Feed it love and it will grow large with love. So large that I will not be able to carry it in my hands. Then I will be forced to share."

This is a really old piece, circa 93. One of the first paintings I ever did in oils and pretty much the only one I'm willing to let be seen. The heart is made out of coffee cup insulators cut into 2" squares and sewn together with twine. The heart is affixed to the front of the painting by two large nails that are poking through the canvas from behind.

Strong woman

This is yet another piece in my "figures as expression" series.
