STONE
Samuel Stone was born in England circa 1811 & immigrated to Saint John Brunswick
Canada in 1829. The 1851 census says he was from Bristol England but we have reason to
believe he may have only sailed out of the port of Bristol and had lived in perhaps Dorset
or Devon. In 1835 Samuel married Mary Cavanaugh from County Sligo Ireland. They
were married in the Presbyterian Church but later most of the family became Catholics,
probably because their mother was a Catholic. Samuel died in 1872 and Mary died in
1867. Samuel was a ships rigger. They had the following children:
Alexander born 1838 and died in 1873
Mary Anne born 1842 who married James Doyle and she died in 1903
Samuel born 1844 - nothing more known about Samuel
Francis born 1848 who married Catherine Kelly in 1872 and he died in 1919
Thomas J. born 1852 who married Mary Hennessey and he died in after 1911
This family all remained in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada & were in the ship building
industry. Mary Anne’s husband, James Doyle was a harbor pilot, Francis was a sail maker and
Thomas J. was also a harbor pilot.
