1 Timothy 2

Prayer, a Priority

1 Tim 2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

First of all, in importance, do these things;

Supplications...or petitions, a formal request To ask for something with fervor; and it should be according to God's word.

James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Psa 28:6 Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.

Psa 31:22 For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.
Psa 31:23 O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.
Psa 31:24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

Psa 116:1 I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.
Psa 116:2 Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.

Psa 143:1 A Psalm of David. Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.

Jer 3:21 A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God.
Jer 3:22 Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.

Dan 9:3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
Dan 9:4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;
Dan 9:5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:

1 Tim 5:5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
1 Tim 5:6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.

Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Prayers refers to all of our heart felt words to the LORD. It requires first that we confess our sins and come with a clean heart.

Isa 1:12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?
Isa 1:13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
Isa 1:14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
Isa 1:15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
Isa 1:16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
Isa 1:17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
Isa 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Isa 1:19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
Isa 1:20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

Mark 12:38 And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,
Mark 12:39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:
Mark 12:40 Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.

Luke 2:36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;
Luke 2:37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Acts 2:43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

God speaks to us to correct things or to do things

Mat 5:23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
Mat 5:24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

1 Pet 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
1 Pet 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

Rev 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.

Intercessions...is our prayer on behalf of anothers needs. We pray for others as Paul did

Col 1:9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
Col 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Col 1:11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

The spirit interceeds for us

Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Rom 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Rom 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Jesus interceeds for us

Heb 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

giving of thanks We should be thankful in all things. We are to be a grateful people, knowing that all good things come from our God.

2 Sam 22:50 Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.

1 Chr 16:8 Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.
1 Chr 16:34 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

Psa 79:13 So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will show forth thy praise to all generations.

Psa 119:62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.

Mark 14:23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.

Eph 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Psa 50:14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:

Phil 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Be made for all men. All have eternal souls and need help to get saved and to stay in God's will. We are to pray for family, friends, and even our enemies

1 Tim 2:2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

For Kings, presidents, rulers and all those in authority. We do not want them under satans control, for they could do much damage and limit our freedom.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

This is a spiritual war. We war in the spirit to bind the forces of evil and loose the power and mercy of God.

1 Tim 2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
1 Tim 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Some who were chosen? No, he says all men. God wills that all men shall be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of truth. All receive salvation in Jesus Christ and be his disciples.

2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Freewill

Ezra 7:13 I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee.

Psa 119:108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments.

Psa 81:11 But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.
Psa 81:12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.
Psa 81:13 Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!

Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
Mat 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

1 Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1 Tim 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Mediator

Heb 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

Heb 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Heb 12:21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
Heb 12:22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
Heb 12:23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
Heb 12:24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
Heb 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

1 Tim 2:7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

Preacher to the called Gentiles

Gen 3:9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
Gen 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. Men hide from God's calling because of sin. Sin separates people from God.

Mat 4:21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
Mat 4:22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

Mat 20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Rom 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

1 Cor 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
1 Cor 1:24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
1 Cor 1:25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
1 Cor 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
1 Cor 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
1 Cor 1:28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
1 Cor 1:29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

1 Tim 2:8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

Lift up holy hands in prayer in all the churches

Men were to lead in prayer, the raising of hands was a common way of praying in this day. Without wrath, not praying angry prayers that put down or condemn others, but rather prayers without doubting, the prayers of faith.

James 5:13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
James 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
James 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

Women in Church

1 Tim 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
1 Tim 2:10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

After the same manner, as men in the churches are to pray, being holy unto God, so should the women be holy, professing godliness with good works. Their focus should not be on the outward appearance. Dressing in such a way to be calling attention to themselves. Some think this means that women are to be dressed in extra long dresses, and wear no make up, with natural hair. I suppose the Muslim people would be an extreme example of hiding the women, behind veils and such. That is too far, putting the woman in bondage to mans idea of the law, imposing burdens upon them.

A modern example of dressing inappropriately would be seductive clothing where everything is almost uncovered. Anything that would call attention to the body and distract from worship, is inappropriate. Men are attracted visually to women, I think you are beginning to see what is meant by this. The focus is not outward, this could apply to men as well. Keep your focus on the holy service unto God. If a Pastor comes representing the Lord in his choice of bizarre clothing, what is he saying visually?

Now, this is meant for teaching in the church, as to what is acceptable. If someone who is not understanding of these things comes in dressed in a different way. We are to show love for the need of the heart and not judge them outwardly. The woman who anointed Jesus' feet was a woman of a bad reputation, but Jesus received her heart and loved her, forgiving her sins.

James warns us to not be showing favoritism to people because of outward appearances. We are not to judge only by appearances.

James 2:1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
James 2:2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
James 2:3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
James 2:4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
James 2:5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
James 2:6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
James 2:7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
James 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

Samuel was sent to choose a king, he was looking at outward stature, but the Lord looks on their heart.

1 Sam 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

We are to look beyond clothing to the heart, in love. We are reproved in Paul's letter to Timothy, to seek a holy heart and not outward adornment. He is talking in this portion of scripture to women and their place in church.

1 Tim 2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
1 Tim 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

The woman in church and the home is to be under her man's authority. She is not under all men's authority. In the church she is to be under those in authority. The men and women were separated on two sides of the synagogue. The women were not to speak out disrupting the service. A woman is not to be a pastor or have authority in the church. To allow this is disrespect of God's word.

1 Cor 14:34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
1 Cor 14:35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

A shame to speak out and interrupt in the service. Another position of authority is the role of deacon.

1 Tim 3:8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
1 Tim 3:9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
1 Tim 3:10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

Godly character is a must for men and women in church. But the deacon is to be a man. What about deaconesses? I see them in our churches, but not in God's word. Will we go beyond his word?

1 Tim 3:11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
1 Tim 3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

Men are to lead in the church and in the home. Are men better than women?

Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Rom 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Rom 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

Equal, as Jesus is equal to God the Father, but in like manner, Jesus is under the Father in authority, so shall the woman be in the church. The word for be silent, also translates, as quietness. The woman is not to be unruly in church and she is to be subject to the husband. The woman is not to teach or rule over a man. Many churches do allow women to teach if under a man's authority, under the Pastors authority. This is church order. Outside the church this does not necessarily apply. Women may go out and witness and teach in other places. Many missionaries are women. Paul continues to speak on authority and roles of the woman.

1 Tim 2:13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

This is to show the order as to authority. Eve was to be a help meet to Adam, a support to him. She was created from him and for his fulfillment, to complete him not to compete or rule over him. This is against God's intent.

1 Tim 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

Eve was deceived, and women generally are more prone to be deceived. Their feelings and emotions affect their judgment. Women are emotionally different from men. They generally are more talkative and more easily persuaded.

Eve sinned first, but Adam partook of her sin. He was not a firm leader. Many times men worship their wives and seek to please them more than they do God. Adam wanted to please his wife who was obeying satan. This caused Adam to sin and be separated from God. This spiritual weakness in leadership passed to all men. Jesus the last Adam brought obedience with him. Through Jesus we are restored. In Jesus the man has the strength to be the true spiritual leader.

1 Tim 2:15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

A woman's place is in the home, teaching her children obedience to authority, respect and the word of God. This is lacking in our nation, where women seek to compete with men and the children are brought up in day care centers.

Older women are to teach the younger.

Titus 2:3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
Titus 2:4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
Titus 2:5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

These duties are so needed in a Christian home and to bring order to our nation. Satan has attacked the families, deceiving the women, to be "liberated." Christ Jesus has liberated believing women. Satan has really done a work in our families. Women, stay with your children, support your husband and do not seek power and authority in the church. Who will raise the children? Women are free to teach outside of the church and to be missionaries, but the church house is patterned after the home.

Let every man and woman examine their heart to obey what the Spirit says concerning God's word. Churches who have women pastors are not churches obedient to the full counsel of God's word. They select certain verses and neglect others. I am not another's judge. Let each examine the word and pray. My position is to teach what the Bible says. Many churches walk in traditions. Outside the formal church I see nothing to prevent women in various ministries of teaching and spreading the word. This is about proper church order, in the formal place of worship.

Women are to be support to the husbands and to the pastors. They are not to have authority over the man. Each will be fulfilled if we fulfill Gods way for us. We ought to obey God.
