2 Thessalonians 2

The Day of the Lord

2 Th 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

The second coming of Christ to earth.

Mark 13:26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
Mark 13:27 And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.

2 Th 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

The day of Christ or the day of the LORD. This is referring to the second coming of Christ. It is at hand; or present would be a better translation, right now. They thought that they were in the very last days. That somehow Christ had called up the saints and they missed him, or perhaps he would come at the very end?

1 Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

The day of the LORD

Isa 2:10 Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty.
Isa 2:11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
Isa 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

Isa 13:6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.

Isa 13:10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
Isa 13:11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

Joel 1:15 Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

Joel 3:13 Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the vats overflow; for their wickedness is great.
Joel 3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

Amos 5:18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.

Oba 1:15 For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.

Zep 1:14 The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.
Zep 1:15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,
Zep 1:16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.
Zep 1:17 And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.
Zep 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
Mal 4:6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

1 Th 5:2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
1 Th 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
1 Th 5:4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
1 Th 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
1 Th 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
1 Th 5:7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
1 Th 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
1 Th 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

They were worried and concerned, for there was trouble all around them. It was a spiritual problem. For does not the devil attack our thoughts to trouble our human spirit? This is why we must trust the Holy Spirit of God, the Word of God and have a renewed mind: the mind of Christ.

Phil 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
John 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
John 14:4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Many today are becoming concerned by news reports, we must keep are eyes upon Jesus.

What must come before the day of the Lord?

It will be the time of Jacob's trouble, the last week of Daniel.

Jer 30:7 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.

2 Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

The very end times will bring about the antichrist. He is mentioned prophetically in the Bible and the Bible is Gods truth. One characteristic of the time of the coming of the beast, is that people will no longer seek truth, there will be no absolutes, only opinions and confusion.

2 Tim 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

!n Revelation this is referred to as the spirit of Babylon. The adulteress woman represents this world wide religion.

Rev 17:15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

A one world religion, represented as the false religion of Babylon. Islam now is the religion of Babylon. Others have pointed to Rome, or to apostate churches of Christ. Churches in name only, liberal, embracing all religions and no longer of truth. A religion all will embrace by agreeing with tolerance (of sin) and by fear of man.

Prov 29:24 Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not.
Prov 29:25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.
Prov 29:26 Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD.
Prov 29:27 An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.

Even this world wide religion will be done away with about midpoint in the last week of Daniel. All will be forced to worship the beast.

Rev 17:17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

The nations will come against the false religion and the woman and destroy her, so that all would worship the image of the beast. He will proclaim himself as God. This is allowed, for it must be to fulfill the scriptures.

The man of sin will be revealed.

2 Th 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

Jesus warned of this man at the temple of God.

Mat 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
Mat 24:16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Mat 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

The beast is spoken of in other names in other scriptures

The little horn

Dan 7:7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.
Dan 7:8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

The king of fierce countenance

Dan 8:23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.
Dan 8:24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practice, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
Dan 8:25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

The prince, coming mid week

Dan 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

The willful king

Dan 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
Dan 11:37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

Comes in his own name

John 5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

He has not yet been revealed.

Restrainer

2 Th 2:5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

These things, that there would be a great falling away from God and the man of sin would be revealed.

2 Th 2:6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

What keeps satan and the antichrist from taking over? Is it not the presence of the Holy Spirit in the church?

Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Mat 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Luke 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

2 Th 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

The spirit of iniquity was already working when John wrote this gospel. He who impedes or restrains (letteth) will obstruct until he be taken out of the way. The church will be taken up, she will be raptured, meeting Jesus in the air. The influence of the Holy Spirit through the church will be gone. The man of sin will set himself up as god, after the church is raptured.

1 Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1 Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

The Holy Spirit will not be completely removed, for God will awaken 144,000 Jewish witnesses out of slumber and seal them as the church was sealed by the Holy Spirit.

Rev 7:4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

There will be this remnant, whereas the church was millions and worldwide. When the man of sin is revealed there will be great tribulation, the persecution of the Jews with many martyred, but they who remain will see the Lord come into his kingdom on earth for the thousand year reign.

Consumed by truth

2 Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
2 Th 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
2 Th 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

The man of sin will be revealed with his plan, to be in absolute control and to be absolutely evil. The devil is at his strongest and his weakest, for already Christ Jesus has taken away his authority. His end is near. He doesn't have dominion, Christ gave that to those who believe in him. One believer and God is enough power; God will pour out his wrath. He, the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth.

Rev 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

From his mouth Jesus speaks the word by the spirit, the sword of truth to judge the nations.

2 Th 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

Already many people believe the lie. Do we place a sin in the title of being a Christian? Liar Christian? Child abuse Christian? Homosexual Christian? Where is shame? Where is a repentant heart? Too many desire to destroy Jesus and His word, by the delusions of their wicked hearts.

Rom 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Rom 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Rom 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.
Rom 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

2 Th 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Yes, God is love, but he is also righteous and He will judge all through His Son and the Bible. Sorry, if some consider this unfair or untrue. God is not a liar, he stands on his word. Jesus saves us from our sins, but not if we continue in them. Where is the evidence of a changed heart? We must repent of our sins and follow him, or we cannot be His disciple. Call upon the Lord with a humble heart and He will hear and come to you. The power to overcome is from God. We must not live in our selfish will and a world apart from God's revealed truth. The man of sin will be destroyed and all who follow him in the antichrist spirit. Jesus came to save you, call on his name and depart from wicked ways.

Belief

2 Th 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

Paul now speaks of the faithful believers in the church, whose end is heaven and a glorified body. You chose salvation. We have been given a free will, but cannot choose God unless he gives us the opportunity by His Spirit and usually by hearing the word of truth. Somehow as Saul of Tarsus, we must see the light of God's truth. We must see Jesus. Then as Saul was changed to Paul the apostle and evangelist. We also shall be changed with a calling from God to walk in. All this comes by believing the gospel truth.

2 Th 2:14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We were called by the gospel, salvation came to us. I like to speak Romans 10:7-11 when witnessing for Jesus.

Rom 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

We are not ashamed of our Lord, even if all others choose the way of wrath, we shall be saved, because Jesus saves us from our sins and the wrath of God.

Traditions of God's word

2 Th 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

Hold fast to traditions, not made up traditions of men, or a church doctrine, but traditions based on God's inspired word. If it is not in the Bible, then beware of the tradition. Do not be led into bondage by man made church traditions.

Col 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
Col 2:21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
Col 2:22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?
Col 2:23 Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
Col 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Col 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Col 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Gal 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

2 Th 2:16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,
2 Th 2:17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

Let God through grace comfort you and establish you in every good word and work. By God's grace we are His and we have His Spirit of truth to make the word alive and to do his will, rejoice in this.
