2 Samuel 22

God's deliverance(Psalm 18)

2 Sam 22:1 And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:

This was written earlier, in chapter 8.

2 Sam 8:15 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people.

2 Sam 22:2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
2 Sam 22:3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

God is his rock and his strength, his hiding place. God is also the God of his rock, Jesus is also referred to as the rock.

1 Cor 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
1 Cor 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
1 Cor 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

2 Sam 22:4 I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

A Psalm of praise for the deliverer, the God of his strength and protection. We also can call on the Lord in time of need. See Psalm 91.

God hears our cries

2 Sam 22:4 I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Psa 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Psa 91:2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Psa 91:3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
Psa 91:4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Psa 91:5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
Psa 91:6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

2 Sam 22:5 When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;

Job 27:8 For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?
Job 27:9 Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?
Job 27:10 Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?

2 Sam 22:6 The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;
2 Sam 22:7 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.

We who trust in Jesus know that he hears our cries, even our groanings.

Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Rom 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Psa 91:14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
Psa 91:15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
Psa 91:16 With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.

Call upon the name of Jesus.

Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Luke 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Phil 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Phil 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Eph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

God is my help

2 Sam 22:6 The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;

David speaks for many who were trapped in a bondage or prison, often not of their own doing.

2 Sam 22:7 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.

Once a soul has been given the promises of God and the hope that he offers, then there is hope and help. David called upon God the Father, we have the light and truth of His Son, Jesus as well. He has come to set the captives free.

Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
Luke 4:19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

2 Sam 22:8 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth.
2 Sam 22:9 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
2 Sam 22:10 He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.

This describes the presence of the LORD such as on Mt. Sinai, where no sin could aproach the mountain and the people feared. Only Moses was allowed to be the mediator for his people. Now we have Jesus, he has opened the way with grace to those who are forgiven by him.

2 Sam 22:11 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.
2 Sam 22:12 And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.
2 Sam 22:13 Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.
2 Sam 22:14 The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
2 Sam 22:15 And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them.
2 Sam 22:16 And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
2 Sam 22:17 He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
2 Sam 22:18 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me. 2 Sam 22:19 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.
2 Sam 22:20 He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

David spoke in colorful metaphors, using pictures in the mind to describe the unseen God and His power. The results of his faith are seen, God is real and he moves for the benefit of those who trust in him. Psalms are as poetry, often set to music. The LORD is our help.

Psa 33:20 Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield.
Psa 33:21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.
Psa 33:22 Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

Righteousness

2 Sam 22:21 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

We think we have no sin and that we are pretty good, but the Bible says differently. David had shed blood, had committed adultery and even murdered Bathsheba's husband. How can he say that he was righteous and with clean hands?

Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

2 Sam 22:22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
2 Sam 22:23 For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
2 Sam 22:24 I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.

Is this a testimony from David? Or was it the heart of God speaking through David? The Lord requires holiness in those who serve him.

2 Sam 22:25 Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.

In Jesus we can claim his righteousness. It is his, not ours.

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

The righteousness of David was through faith in God's promises. His faith was counted for righteousness.

Rom 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Psa 23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Rom 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Rom 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Rom 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

Merciful

2 Sam 22:26 With the merciful thou wilt show thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt show thyself upright.

A young woman recently came to our online Internet Chatroom called, "Finding God." She said that her mother had told her that she was going to hell, because of a sin she had commited. She was given the gospel and received the Lord. The mother was angry with me, saying that her daughter was going to hell. "What of your future? Are you going to heaven? She did not care to talk of that.

When we show no mercy to another it will come back to us. If we are merciful, God is merciful with us.

Mat 7:1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
Mat 7:2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

To tell someone they are going to hell, is an example of judging with condemnation. We are not to do this. We are to use judgment knowing right from wrong, using God's word to bring life, not death.

The Lord sent angels to lead Lot's family out of Sodom before he destroyed it. God wants to give mercy, but most seek their own way.

Gen 19:16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

Gen 19:25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
Gen 19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

God will not force you to come out of sin. His mercy and grace is in Jesus. If you continue to look back to sin, there is no more mercy.

Perfect way

2 Sam 22:31 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.

His way is perfect. Man's ideas are not perfect.

2 Tim 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

There is no error in God's word, only in our lack of understanding the whole. Cults form doctrines around mans ideas of scripture. The man of God must study all scriptures in context, questioning anything that is not sound by the word and the Holy Spirit.

God is our buckler, our shield and faith in Jesus is our shield from satan's darts. Jesus has won the victory and sets at the right hand of the Father.

2 Sam 22:32 For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?

There is one God who is creator and he created all through the Word, Jesus is the Word of God. He is the rock of our salvation.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

2 Sam 22:33 God is my strength and power: And he maketh my way perfect.

He is your strength if you obey him in all he has shown you. His way is perfect, his ways are perfect, his path for you is perfect, but we are not yet perfect. In our spirit we are perfect, being in Christ Jesus in heavenly places.

Eph 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
Eph 3:10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
Eph 3:11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
Eph 3:12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

But we must learn to walk in his way for us.

2 Sam 22:34 He maketh my feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places.

He makes your feet to not slip, in the way that he has for you. Do you know that it is His Spirit that works through you to do his perfect will?

Eph 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Eph 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

In our flesh we fail. When we obey His word and Spirit we do not lose our footing. Walk with the Lord Jesus Christ and you will not fall.

Strong in war

2 Sam 22:35 He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

There are enemies of God and his people which at times must be fought. These people were out to destroy David. It was not a misunderstanding over words. His life was in danger. David slew Goliath with a single stone and faith in God. If strength is required, God will supply it.

2 Sam 22:36 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.

God's Spirit is a gentle spirit.

James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Faith in God is our shield.

2 Sam 22:37 Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip.

An enlarged step is secure. This does not mean that we do not move. God provides the steps as we move in his will. I remember the days when we would climb down rocky cliffs to the sea, loaded with diving gear. If the footing was unstable rocks we had learned to keep moving. By continuing in the momentum we were saved from falling.

Psa 91:11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
Psa 91:12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

2 Sam 22:38 I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.
2 Sam 22:39 And I have consumed them, and wounded them, that they could not arise: yea, they are fallen under my feet.
2 Sam 22:40 For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me.

Isa 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

2 Sam 22:41 Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.
2 Sam 22:42 They looked, but there was none to save; even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.
2 Sam 22:43 Then did I beat them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad.

They would no longer oppose God's anointed.

Deu 20:4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

Give thanks

2 Sam 22:44 Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.

Not only had the LORD delivered David, but he had put fear in the hearts of the heathen nations so that they would serve the anointed king. It takes a strong anointing for strangers of God's covenant to bow in submission to the presence of God's Spirit.

2 Sam 22:45 Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me.
2 Sam 22:46 Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places.

The anointed of God are noticed by the heathens. They battle or they submit and make room for the anointing.

2 Sam 22:47 The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.

We serve a living God, blessed be my rock, blessed be Jesus and the God of the rock of my salvation. This is an amazing prophetic praise. Jesus was not yet known, he had not yet come, but the promise of a messiah had been given. Even faith in the promise brought grace and salvation. Exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation. It is appropriate to exalt God the Father and the rock, Jesus the Son. Both are together to be exalted by the Holy Ghost.

2 Sam 22:48 It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me,
2 Sam 22:49 And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
2 Sam 22:50 Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.
2 Sam 22:51 He is the tower of salvation for his king: and showeth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.

David, a man after God's own heart, seeks not to exalt himself. He exalts the LORD. A true servant gives glory and thanks and praise to the source of deliverance and blessings. Our God is an awesome God, glory to our LORD and to the Rock. Superragman@aol.com
