2 Samuel 5

David, King of Israel

2 Sam 5:1 Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

There were twelve tribes of Jacob, who was named Israel. David had been king over the tribe of Judah, the tribe our Lord would come from through his legal parents. Israel was the eleven tribes that were separated from Judah. Now they come in peace seeking reconciliation. They were all one flesh, the descendants of Jacob and Abraham.

2 Sam 5:2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.

Saul had been a captain over thousands and was know as a military hero before Saul out of jealousy tried to kill him.

1 Sam 18:6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music.
1 Sam 18:7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

2 Sam 5:3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel.
2 Sam 5:4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.
2 Sam 5:5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

David was anointed as king by Samuel at age fifteen. He had to wait fifteen more years before he would finally receive the title that God had given him. King David, King over all Israel. The Messiah would come being called the son of David and the Son of God. This was an important event in the history of the world. It was ordained of God.

Jerusalem, the city of David

2 Sam 5:6 And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither.

Jerusalem was on a well defended mountain top, Mt. Zion. The Jebusites were to have been removed when Israel came into the promised land. They were in this stronghold, so confident were they that they mocked David saying, we can defend our city even using the blind and the lame. Another son of David would come into Jerusalem, healing the blind and the lame, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jerusalem would be the city of the king. The temple would be built there. It will become the holy city.

2 Sam 5:7 Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David.

The city of king David, the city of the coming eternal king.

2 Sam 5:8 And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, that are hated of David's soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.

David would have his men climb up the spring through the tunnel or gutter into the city. He would then be able to expel the so called blind and lame and then be able to enter his house.

2 Sam 5:9 So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.

Milo was supposedly a fortress of the Jebusites. In taking this enemy stronghold it kept his country from being divided.

With the capture of this stronghold, David eliminated a Jebusite fortress that, in effect, had cut his kingdom in two; and the making of Jerusalem as his capital was one of the most important achievements of David's kingship. (Coffman)

2 Sam 5:10 And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.

David was not great because he was born that way. He was great because he trusted the Living God. Through faith he had defeated Goliath. Through Saul's chasing him he learned long suffering. When at the end he joined with the enemy, he strengthened himself in the LORD and the Lord brought him out. He saw the LORD'S grace. David still had rough edges. His flesh and lusts would work against him, yet he always served and trusted the LORD.

King Hiram

2 Sam 5:11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house. Hiram, king of Tyre was a friend of David and built him a palace in Jerusalem. David made alliances with other nations, through marriage to their daughters and other ways of goodwill.

2 Sam 5:12 And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.

Yes, the LORD had established David as king, he was chosen as a young shepherd boy.

1 Sam 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

David knew that the LORD had exalted David's kingdom, for the peoples sake. Often we hear politicians say they are the people's servants. Yet, they rob the treasury with high wages and life time full pay. King Saul saw the kingdom as his own, and he wanted power more than God's favor. Those who God puts in power need to remember who they are really accountable to. David knew it was God who had given him favor, for Israel's sake.

2 Sam 5:13 And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.

The flesh is weak. David was God's servant, yet satisfied his own lusts. We must guard against our lusts when we are blessed by God. He had many children in Jerusalem. His example in family matters was not so good and he would pass down family problems to his children, because he did not repent of this sin. The law was broken by David having many women. The law spoke to future kings warning them of excess.

Deu 17:15 Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
Deu 17:16 But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.
Deu 17:17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

For the record, the names of David's children born in Jerusalem are listed.

2 Sam 5:14 And these be the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammuah, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,
2 Sam 5:15 Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia,
2 Sam 5:16 And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.

We want our children to serve God as we serve him, but we do not want them to follow our weaknesses. David had God's Spirit, yet he was under the old covenant of the law. His sins would not escape unnoticed under the law. We love God's blessings, but that is not an occasion for sin. The law also brought curses for willful sin. Thank God for our Lord Jesus Christ who has delivered us by his grace.

Gal 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Philistines

2 Sam 5:17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.

All the Philistines, the armies of the enemy who opposed Israel came up to seek to destroy David. David hearing of this went down to his stronghold. Our true strength is always the LORD. With every increase in God's plan, Satan the opposer sends his people to try to stop us.

2 Sam 5:18 The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
2 Sam 5:19 And David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

David had learned to ask and to hear from God. We too are to seek Him for our decisions and to obey Him. The same relationship enabled a young David to stand alone before Goliath, the giant and to defeat him. The LORD had given him a command, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

2 Sam 5:20 And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim.

The LORD had come as a flood, breaking forth as a river overflows its banks. David defeated them at this place.

2 Sam 5:21 And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.

The Philistines left behind their images, the small figures of their gods. They had trusted in images of their own creation, they worshipped devil's who attached themselves to the images. David and his men burned them.

The stirring

2 Sam 5:22 And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
2 Sam 5:23 And when David inquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
2 Sam 5:24 And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.

The Philistines came again and David inquired of the LORD again. This time the LORD gives him detailed instructions. What good would it be to hear from the Lord and not obey? This was Saul's downfall. When the children of Israel came to Jericho, the LORD gave them exact orders that they followed. On the seventh time around the walls they shouted and the trumpets sounded and the walls fell down. We must do as the LORD says.

Compass them about and listen for the sound of marching at the top of the mulberry trees. The wind blowing, the spirit moving. Tradition has it that this was the sound of angels moving into battle. We have God's Spirit and his angels going with us. When God says move quickly, we must move.

John 3:8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

2 Sam 5:25 And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.

The LORD gave them the victory. He will give us many victories when we listen and obey Him. Each of us must be sensitive to the stir of the Spirit in our hearts, listen to his still small voice and obey Him. Do not let satan's fear block the way, go into your victory.
