Four Kings
Dan 11:1 Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him.
The angel ministered to Darius to confirm and strengthen him. Spiritual authority strengthening earthly authority. Why do some enemies same so powerful? Powerful spiritual authority behind them. We should pray for our rulers to bring good spiritual authority to guide them. And if our loved ones who are away same to be bound by a spirit, we need to pray for their release.
Dan 11:2 And now will I show thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.
The angel continues to explain further of four future kings. The first three will be weaker, but the forth shall be strong and rich, stirring up battles against Greece. This was the Persian king Xerxes, also called Ahasuerus. (Esther 1:10) He was the King who married Esther. Esther prevented the destruction of the Jewish people. Xerxes was the son of King Darius. Xerxes had invaded Athens burning the Acropolis, a fortified city. He angered the Greeks who overcame him in battles.
This Chapter includes prophecy over a period of 375 years. All came about as prophesied, and the end time antichrist.
Alexander the Great
Dan 11:3 And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will.
History has shown that the king was Alexander the great. He was a brilliant military leader and king. He suffered the same wounds as his soldiers, he paid attention to every man in the army and he always led the attack in person. He defeated the Persians and took their vast treasure and went as far as India defeating the peoples. Alexander would fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah concerning the destruction of Tyre.
Ezek 26:3 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Tyrus, and will cause many nations to come up against thee, as the sea causeth his waves to come up.
Ezek 26:4 And they shall destroy the walls of Tyrus, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock.
Ezek 26:5 It shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD: and it shall become a spoil to the nations.
Tyre, stood on an island about 1/2 mile offshore. Unable to capture the island from the sea, Alexander ordered his engineers to build a causeway out to the island, converting it into a peninsula that remains even today. His troops used such weapons as battering rams, catapults, and mobile towers in their attack. The Tyrians on the island surrendered in 332 B.C., after seven months of fighting. Alexander's use of huge siege machines at Tyre introduced a new age of warfare.
Dan 11:4 And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.
He died at the age of 32. The kingdom was divided among four generals. Alexander had no heirs to his kingdom, his brother and son were killed. The four winds are the four directions of kingdom rule.
North and South
Dan 11:5 And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion.
Remember these are prophecies of future events. Looking back we see there fulfillment. One of the four Generals who ruled after Alexander the great, the king of the south shall be stronger. This was fulfilled in Ptolemy I of Egypt. The Ptolemies dominated the south. Ptolemy I had a prince; Seleaucus. He took dominion over Syria in the north. The Seleucids are identified with the Kings of the North.
Dan 11:6 And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times.
Berenice (daughter of Ptolemy II) of the south married Antiochus II (of the Seleucids). There was peace for a time. When Berenices father died, Antiochus II, put her away and took back his former wife, Laodice. Apparently he liked his first wife more. She did not trust him, so Laodice not liking her husband, had him poisoned. She wanted her own power and prominence.
Laodice had Berenice, her attendants and the kings son killed. She then placed her son Selecus II, on the throne of the northern Syrian kingdom.
Psa 32:10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about.
Psa 32:11 Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.
God knew these evils before they came about. There is no separation of time with the Lord. This information is from history. I prefer using only the Bible, yet we see the Bibles fulfillment of these prophecies in the history of these kings. The word of God is true.
Holy land battles
Dan 11:7 But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail:
PtolemyIII comes against the northern kingdom to avenge the killing of his sister, Berenice.
Dan 11:8 And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north.
Dan 11:9 So the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land.
The king of the south prevailed against the north, bringing spoil back to Egypt. The king of the south outlived the northern king.
Dan 11:10 But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress.
The sons of the northern kings will be stirred into battle, over flowing and passing through Israel, which separated the two kingdoms. The strongest of the sons was AntiochusIII.
Dan 11:11 And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.
Dan 11:12 And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it.
The king of the south, Ptolemy IV, is angered and comes against the northern King, AntiochusIII, defeating him and regaining the holy land of Israel.
The angel speaks in detail battles which were in the future, and we look to history to see there fulfillment. There is no separation of time with God.
Rev 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Cleopatra
Dan 11:13 For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.
AntiochusIII returns with a mighty army against the south.
Dan 11:14 And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall.
Philip, king of Macedon will join against the king of the south, also violent Jews, robbers shall join but will fail.
Dan 11:15 So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.
Antiochus III, overthrew the forces in the south.
Dan 11:16 But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed.
God's angel always talked with loving favor about the land of Israel, the holy city, the glorious land. The northern king will conquer and bring destruction to Israel. Still, all will work together to glorify God. Evil has its time, but those who trust in the Lord he will keep. Evil shall not triumph.
Dan 11:17 He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.
The king of the north attempts to strengthen his kingdom by giving his daughter Cleopatra in marriage to Ptolemy Epiphanes of the south. She favored her husband more than her father's affairs.
Dan 11:18 After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him.
Antiochus goes to war with the Romans, at the Mediterranian coastlands, and was defeated.
Dan 11:19 Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found.
He returns home to the north and there he died. After this a powerful leader would arise that would bring evil to Israel.
Prov 3:33 The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
Prov 3:34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.
Prov 3:35 The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
Antiochus Epiphanes
Dan 11:20 Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.
This is Seleucus Philopator, oldest son of Antiochus III who imposed taxes on Israel. His father ruled for 37 years, his reign was about twelve years, until he died of poisoning.
Dan 11:21 And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.
Then comes a vile man who was not honored in Israel. He called himself Antiochus "Epiphanes," the illustrious. The Jews called him Antiochus "Epimanes," the insane.
Dan 11:22 And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant.
He shall come in peaceably and take the kingdom by flatteries.
Dan 11:23 And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.
He made deals with the Egyptians and certain influential Jews. He would be strong with a small amount of people.
Dan 11:24 He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.
He will plunder the richest places. He will rule through deceit.
Dan 11:25 And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him.
Dan 11:26 Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain.
Twice Antiochus invaded Egypt. The Egyptian king, Ptolomy Physcon, tried to oppose him but his own people betrayed him.
Dan 11:27 And both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.
Both kings were deceitful liars, but their mischief was subject to the appointed times of God.
Dan 11:28 Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.
Upon returning to the north with great riches, Antiochus will pass through Israel and interrupt and interfere with the covenant worship and practices of Israel.
We see types and shadows of the end times in these angelic prophesies that came about.
1 Cor 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Mat 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Blasphemies
Dan 11:29 At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.
The third battle was not very successful and the super power, the Romans, threatened to retaliate for the damage done to them.
Dan 11:30 For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.
The Roman ships were threatening Antiochus, so out of frustration he takes out his anger against "the holy covenant." In our country this is happening from the court judges who are removing God's covenant promises from public life.
Those who were against the covenant were favored. In modern times, the ACLU, the pro abortionist, homosexual activists, and those opposing Israel, the anti-God people gained political favor. This is the spirit of antichrist.
Dan 11:31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.
Dan 11:32 And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.
Antiochus Epiphanes defiled the holy sanctuary. He offered swine flesh on the altar and forbid the covenant practices. He took away the daily sacrifice. This was the abomination of desolation. These things will be repeated again in the last days as Jesus has warned us.
Mark 13:14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:
Still those who know and obey God shall be strong and do exploits.
Plundered and purged
Dan 11:33 And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.
The people of God shall teach many the law and promises of the LORD, but they shall be persecuted and killed, robbed and plundered and imprisoned. In his attack on Jerusalem Antiochus IV is said to have killed 80,000 Jews, taken 40,000 more as prisoners, and sold another 40,000 as slaves. He also plundered the temple, robbing it of approximately $1 billion.
Dan 11:34 Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.
Prov 3:25 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
Prov 3:26 For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.
Prov 3:27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
Prov 3:28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
Prov 3:29 Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.
Prov 3:30 Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.
Prov 3:31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
Prov 3:32 For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.
Dan 11:35 And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.
The events described here were fulfilled during the Maccabean period, which began in 168 B.C. with the revolt of a priest, Mattathias and his five sons. These headed for the hills and fought againt the Antiochus Syrians. It is assumed that from this group there arised the beginnings of the Saducees and the Pharisees.
Rev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Rev 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
the antichrist
Dan 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
The story continues without a break, which would lead the reader to think this is still about Antiochus Epiphanes. Yet, many see this as shifting to the end time Antichrist who is yet to come. Antiochus Epiphanes put a statue of Zeus in the temple, not of himself. This will be far more precisely fulfilled in the Antichrist, who sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
2 Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
2 Th 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
The false god shall speak blasphemes against the God of gods. He will seemingly prosper until Jesus comes and the angels put a stop to his reign.
Dan 11:37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
Antiochus was not Jewish, but the antichrist may be of Jewish lineage, not regarding the God of his fathers. Having no desire for women, could mean that he is also a homosexual. He shall magnify himself above all, just like satan who tried to be as God. This probably is a man who is the host for the spirit of satan.
Dan 11:38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
Dan 11:39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.
Perhaps he will honor himself, prince of the powers of the air. The god of force, another war god is the islamic god of killing, the same spiritual power is in this. Allah was never worshipped by the Jews. The true God loves Israel, the antichrist god seeks to destroy this people.
Final battle
Dan 11:40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
Is the king of the south Egypt or are these the Arab countries? The king of the north is this Syria or Russia? The nations will gather against the antichrist.
Dan 11:41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.
Dan 11:42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
Dan 11:43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.
The antichrist shall prosper plundering the nations of the south.
Dan 11:44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.
Two hundred million men will come from the east to battle.
Rev 9:13 And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,
Rev 9:14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.
Rev 9:15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.
Rev 9:16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.
Jesus will also come from the east to end this siege on Jerusalem.. This sounds like the battle of Armageddon.
Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
Rev 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
Rev 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
Rev 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
Rev 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Rev 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Rev 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;
Rev 19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
Rev 19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
Rev 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Rev 19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
Dan 11:45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
It is all over for the antichrist.
