Genesis 19

Angels come to Sodom

Gen 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

Two angels; the third, the LORD went his way in Chapter 18. Lot was sitting at the gate, a term for a place of authority. Was he as judge and the mayor of Sodom, welcoming guests and settling disputes? His prominence in the city may be the result of his relationship to Abraham, who had rescued the cities people and wealth.

Gen 19:2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
Gen 19:3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

He showed the men hospitality.

Gen 19:4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
Gen 19:5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

Some homosexuals on the Internet say that the sin of Sodom was lack of hospitality. How foolish, they were all homosexuals from the young to the old men, in Sodom. This is why the angels were sent to destroy the city. Lot showed the two men hospitality, he did not invite the city to terrorize his two guests, he protected them.

The Bible speaks of this sin.

Rom 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Rom 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.
Rom 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Lev 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Lev 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

God will never allow this behavior and it is a sick society that makes laws favoring this choice of behavior.

Homosexuals also have an interest in defining themselves as "gay," a word that used to mean "happy" or "carefree," but it is a poor description of a lifestyle that has such a high rate of death, disease, and suicide.

Gen 19:6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
Gen 19:7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
Gen 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

Unbelievable, how much of Sodom's ways had entered Lot. But, in our time parents with evil hearts have sold their young daughters for money. Lot is described as righteous, but how far he had fallen.

Gen 19:9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

Lot may have thought that he would influence or save some in the city. They mocked him and called him a stranger. Who made him our judge? They despised this worldly man who claimed to be of God. They promised to do to him worse than to the two guests. They were crushing Lot against the door as he attempted to protect the two strangers. Lot did not know that they were angels.

Gen 19:10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.
Gen 19:11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

The angels blinded the spiritually blind men who were so overcome with lust. The worst kind of blindness is spiritual; those unable to see and understand the word's of God.

John 9:39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
John 9:40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
John 9:41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

Gen 19:12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

Where are the people of faith who you have reached to believe in God? There were not even ten. Remember in Genesis 13.

Gen 13:10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
Gen 13:12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
Gen 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

Lot wanted the beautiful land as a possession, thinking it would prosper him; but in doing so he set his tent towards Sodom , with wicked people. How often do people make decisions because of financial gain, putting finances ahead of their Spiritual walk? Then they rationalize it saying that they will be the light? Lot was not the light he wanted to be, but blended in with the people and the people had contempt or made fun of his faith.

2 Cor 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
2 Cor 6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
2 Cor 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
2 Cor 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

Gen 19:13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.

God had destroyed evil earlier and he would do it again and again.

Gen 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
Gen 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

Gen 18:32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.

Gen 19:14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

Lot had no moral authority and his words were as mocking to the spiritually dead son in laws. Apparently they were married, but in a time of engagement not having been together as man and wife. Either that or they were homosexuals, because the daughters were virgins.

Gen 19:8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man;...

Gen 19:15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

Only Lot's immediate family were to be rescued. They were sanctified because of Lot. The city would soon be destroyed.

1 Cor 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.

Gen 19:16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

Lot lingered, his heart was in the city and his things. All these would be burned. The angels grabbed the hand of each of them and pulled them outside of the city.

1 Cor 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
1 Cor 3:14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
1 Cor 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Lot put things before God and lost it all. He did not put God first in his life.

Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Gen 19:17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
Gen 19:18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:
Gen 19:19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast showed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:
Gen 19:20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

Lot still wants his way. He is motivated by fear, he must be where there is a city and it's provisions. Would God not provide, having spared his life? How many of us do not trust God to care for us where he sends us? Many decide what they want and then ask God to bless. This was the way of Lot.

Gen 19:21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
Gen 19:22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

The angels agreed to give Lot his request, for they could not destroy the evil cities until he was delivered. God's wrath does not abide on the just and Lot was considered a righteous man, by faith. Zoar means insignificant.

1 Pet 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
1 Pet 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

Rom 9:22 What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
Rom 9:23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
Rom 9:24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

1 Th 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
1 Th 5:10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

Lessons from Lot

Gen 19:23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

Biblical Zoar was located southeast of the dead sea. Lot, his wife and three daughters entered the city of Zoar as the sun was risen upon the earth. The thing about Zoar was that Lot was still telling God that he would choose, and that God was to bless his choice. Instead of obeying God and putting him first.

Gen 19:24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

Some explain this fire as a volcano arising from the earth. There were oil pits in this area that would burn readily. The Bible says the fire came down from heaven. It was the judgment of the LORD God.

Gen 19:25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

Sudden destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah behind them. They were told to not look back, also they were told to escape to the mountain, further away. There was a reason for this. Imagine a nuclear blast and you are in a small city not far away? You soon would wish that you were way up on the mountain instead.

Gen 19:17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

Gen 19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Lot's wife was disobedient and looked back, for her heart was in that city. She loved the things of this life, more than the obeying of God. She was turned into a pillar of salt. Jesus would refer to her disobedience in reference to the last days. Where will people's hearts be? Will they look to Jesus or desire the evil things of this world. Where is our focus? Jesus speaks to us today, for we are in the last days.

Luke 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
Luke 17:27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.
Luke 17:28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
Luke 17:29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
Luke 17:30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
Luke 17:31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.

Luke 17:32 Remember Lot's wife.
Luke 17:33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

She loved the things of the world, more than God. No looking back. Jesus was speaking to his closest disciples, not the world. He is speaking to us today. What do we seek in this life? Are we like Lot busy making choices, our way and asking God to bless our choices. It takes more than a good companion, prosperity and privilege to be saved. Are we like Lot's wife, seeking health and prosperity in this world, thinking by being blessed with things that we are where God wants us?

It is all a mistake. It is an entire delusion. It requires something more than privileges to save souls. Joab was David's captain; Gehazi was Elisha's servant; Demas was Paul's companion; Judas Iscariot was Christ's disciple; and Lot had a worldly, unbelieving wife. These all died in their sins. They went down to the pit in spite of knowledge, warnings, and opportunities; and they all teach us that it is not privileges alone that men need. They need the grace of the Holy Ghost. (Ryle)

They need to walk by faith, not sight; it is a strait and narrow path.

Luke 9:61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
Luke 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Gen 19:27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:
Gen 19:28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
Gen 19:29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

It was the close fellowship of Abraham with God each morning at his altar, that brought deliverance to Lot. God remembered the intercession of Abraham for his nephew, Lot.

Gen 19:30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

Now Lot went out of Zoar into the mountain, where God originally told him to go. They dwelt in a cave; Lot and his two virgin daughters.

Gen 19:31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:
Gen 19:32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

Foolish women, trying to do things in the flesh. Concerned that no son was born, she comes up with their solution. Reminding me of Sara and Hagar. Sara's decision resulted in the Arab nations and Islam, the enemies of Israel.

Gen 19:33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
Gen 19:34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
Gen 19:35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

Another commentary was kind concerning Lot's daughters

Consider the awesome and powerful events that Lot's family experienced in a relatively short time. They witnessed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah totally destroyed by fire and brimstone rained down from heaven by God. Then Lot's wife is turned into a pillar of salt because of her disobedience. The family is eventually forced, out of fear, to live in a cave. Given the situation wouldn't you be a bit distressed and afraid of what might happen next? Lot's daughters must have thought it was the end of civilization and that they were some of the only people then living. They were obviously greatly concerned about the future of their family (and possibly the human race). This concern led them to do what they did.(R&E Beltz)

My thoughts were not so kind. I see Lot's daughters, with no names given; as foolish and sinful women, brought up in a wicked society, never learning godly counsel.

2 Tim 3:6 ... silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
2 Tim 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

The results of their sin produced two nations who would oppose Israel and who would be cursed by God.

Gen 19:36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
Gen 19:37 And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

The Moabites tried to get the prophet, Balaam to curse the people of Israel who were coming into the land.

Gen 19:38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

The two nations from these sons, would be cursed by God.

Deu 23:3 An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever:
Deu 23:4 Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because they hired against thee Balaam the son of Beor of Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse thee.
Deu 23:5 Nevertheless the LORD thy God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the LORD thy God turned the curse into a blessing unto thee, because the LORD thy God loved thee.
Deu 23:6 Thou shalt not seek their peace nor their prosperity all thy days for ever.

Solomon was rich and very wise, and yet he fell.

1 Ki 11:1 But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites;
1 Ki 11:2 Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.
1 Ki 11:3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.
1 Ki 11:4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.
1 Ki 11:5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

The LORD'S judgment Zep 2:9 Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.

The wisest man before Jesus, had all possessions and fell because he lusted after the Moabite and Ammonite women and their gods. Are we wiser than Solomon? Sexual immorality and following pleasures and idols are the sins of these last days. To follow Jesus and to be saved, we must be born again and have the mind of Christ and the leading of the Holy Spirit. We must follow Jesus and not look back.
