The Serpent
Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
The serpent was satan or was indwelt by satan.
Satan was in the garden
Ezek 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
Satan was created with beautiful precious stones covering him, similar to how New Jersualem will look, even with transparent gold. He was created with music, tabrets or tamberines, and pipes, flutes or organ sounds.
Ezek 28:14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
He covered the holy of holies in heaven.
Ezek 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
He was created perfect, until iniquity was found in him. What was his sin? Pride, wanting to make himself as God. Angels are created to serve, not to rebel. There is no repentance for a rebelling angel.
Ezek 28:16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
Satan was full of self and God cast him out and will destroy him. He knows his time is short.
Ezek 28:17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
He thought he was so special, full of pride, he was cast to the earth, we will see his end.
Ezek 28:18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffic; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
Ezek 28:19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.
He will be no more, thrown into the lake of fire.
The serpent or dragon
Job 26:13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.
Isa 51:9 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?
Rev 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
Rev 12:8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Rev 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, Sin judged, the brass serpent on the cross.
John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
Brass is a type of judgment. Jesus judged the devil upon the cross.
Pride, I will be as God
Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
Isa 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
Isa 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Isa 14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
Isa 14:16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
Isa 14:17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
...Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
He planted doubt into Eves mind. To doubt God is to sin. Satan, the liar, seemed to have more authority than God. We must not follow any other spirit, that is not in accord with God's word.
The Fall of Mankind
Gen 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
Gen 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
The first mistake was to listen to the serpent who went against God's word. Eve responded with God's command. When tempted by the devil we are to quote God's word as Jesus did when he was tempted in the wilderness.
Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
The lies continue; ye shall not surely die. If the devil can get us to doubt God, he can control us. Take a little drugs, it want hurt you. Have another drink, you can handle it. Temptation and false promises are the devil's way.
Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
God is keeping something from you; pro choice, which means death. If they obeyed, then there would be need to know about evil. The devil appealed to her the way that he fell, by saying you will be as God. She was already created in God's image. The knowledge of sin, would separate her from God, just as satan fell from his high position.
Gen 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
She was tempted, believed satan and took the forbidden fruit. She wanted to be as God and convinced her husband as well. She was not created to be God, but in his image, good, to love and to obey Him.
2 Cor 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
1 Tim 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
1 Tim 2:13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
1 Tim 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
1 Tim 2:15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
Gen 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
For the first time they were ashamed.
Prov 12:4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
Gen 3:8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
When Jesus came to be with us, he loved the garden.
John 17:26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.
John 18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.
He was buried in a garden place.
John 19:41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. When he arose from the grave, he was seen in a garden and thought to be the gardener, the job that Adam had been given.
John 20:15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
Gen 3:9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
Gen 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
He did not confess that they had sinned, They tried to hide their sin as they hid from God being ashamed of their nakedness. Fear came with sin and shame.
Heb 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
Gen 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
What would have happened if Adam had confessed, taken full responsibility for his sin and repented? Perhaps he would have been forgiven? If he were to die, perhaps his death would have saved his wife. But what of Eve, would she confess and repent too?
Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Eph 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Eph 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
The wife had not submitted, she took of the fruit, disobeying her husband and her Lord. The husband loved his wife more than the Lord, both wanted their own way, more than God's command.
Gen 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
Now Adam blames the woman, not confessing his own responsibility. Apart from God, nothing works, although satan tempted with twisted promises. Only the promises of God are true.
2 Cor 1:20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
Gen 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
She did not confess and repent, but blamed the serpent.
Gen 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
The creature which lent itself to Satan may well have been the most beautiful as was the most "subtle" of creatures less than man. Traces of that beauty remain despite the curse. Every movement of a serpent is graceful, and many species are beautifully coloured. (Scofield)As satan was made most beautiful, and as he lifted himself up to be as God, so also would he be cast down to the ground, to be humbled in the dust of the earth. There will be no repentance or restoration for the serpent.
Isa 65:25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD. There is no repentance for devil and his fallen angels.
Mat 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Enmity between the devil and the woman. God cursed the devil, he was not to be a friend of humans. It shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heal. A prophecy of the destruction of satan by the coming Messiah, Jesus.
The Seed
Gen 22:17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
Gen 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
Gal 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
He, the seed, Jesus, shall crush satans head under is feet. He shall bruise his heal in the process, The cross was satan's last attempt to destroy the seed of woman; Eve and Mary. His hands and ankles were nailed to the cross. His resurrection was the end of the devil's headship, no longer would he have dominion over the righteous people of the Lord.
Rom 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise (crush) Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
Gen 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
Pain is soon forgotten when a child is born.
John 16:21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
John 16:22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
1 Tim 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
1 Tim 2:15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
A woman has a great inflence on her children. She is with them more than the man and can guide them into all truth. He shall rule over her. This was the problem, Eve acted on her own, not being in subjection to her husband. The help meet became the temptress to sin. Her desire is to be towards her husband and not forbidden fruit.
Gen 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Adam is the last to sin, so his judgment comes last. We are to obey God over man or woman.
Acts 4:19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
Acts 4:20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
The beautiful garden that Adam was to care for was cursed. The ground would be cursed. It will be sorrow and travail in tilling the ground to bring forth food.
Gen 3:18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
Thorns and thistles would be created, which would need to be removed. Instead of abundant food, he had to eat common plants of the field. He had it all before the fall, yet he desired the one forbidden fruit. Because of this, he had to work hard for not much food.
Gen 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
Man must work by the sweat of his brow; dust to dust.
Ecc 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
Gen 3:20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
Evening begins the day, so Eve was her name, the beginning and mother of all men to come.
Gen 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
The LORD provided skins of animals to cover them. This began the offering of animals and blood for sin; looking forward to the sacrifice of Jesus, the Lamb of God. When we would be covered with the righteousness of Christ, through faith.
Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Behold the man is become as one of us; one of the Trinity, to know good and evil. Now he must not eat of the tree of life.
John 6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
John 6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
The tree of life is for those who are the children of God. Sin separates from God; Jesus restores the lost in sin person, to eternal life.
Gen 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Adam continued to be a farmer or gardener, although the ground was cursed. It would be with effort that he would dig in the ground. The abundance of food would not be without much work. The first Adam was a gardener.
The last Adam, Jesus, is described as the living vine.
John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. (The vinedresser.)
John 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Gen 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Adam was driven out of the garden, the place where eternal life was found: the tree of life. Cherubims are always where God is. The tree of life was the presence of God in the garden. The flaming swords were the judgement and power of God, keeping evil away. He drove out the man, like a trespasser in a garden; which is what he became. Dead in sins and trespasses.
Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
The angels were in the east of the garden, why only in the east? The east, is where the sun rises, where the source of light and life is. Jesus will return from the east.
Ezek 10:19 And the cherubims lifted up their wings, and mounted up from the earth in my sight: when they went out, the wheels also were beside them, and every one stood at the door of the east gate of the LORD'S house; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above.
Ezek 43:4 And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east.
Ezek 43:5 So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house.
Mat 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
No one can enter the heavenly paradise, but through Jesus.
