Esau's Descendants
Gen 36:1 Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.
Esau is called, Edom which is red. He was the firstborn of Isaac and a favorite of his father. He was a non identical twin, his brother being Jacob.
Gen 25:25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
Gen 25:27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
Gen 25:28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Rebekah helped Jacob to deceive Jacob and to steal his birthright. Because of this Esau vowed to kill his brother Jacob. His descendents, the Edomites would be the enemies of Jacob, who was called Israel.
Gen 27:38 And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.
Gen 27:39 And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;
Gen 27:40 And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
Esau or Edom is a type of the natural, worldly man. I see two ways to break the yoke of Jacob from Esau. One is to overcome Israel by causing them to sin. The other is by being yoked with Jesus.
Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Mat 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
When Moses led the people of Israel from Egypt, the Edomites would not allow them to pass through their land.
Num 20:19 And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.
Num 20:20 And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
Num 20:21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.
The LORD gave this land to Esau for an inheritance.
Deu 2:4 And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:
Deu 2:5 Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.
When the people of Israel sinned, then he would take power over them. King Solomon married strange wives, among them an Edomite, who served other gods. This turned Israel away from the LORD unto demonic gods.
1 Ki 11:1 But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites;
1 Ki 11:2 Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.
Edom would be judged by God.
Ezek 25:12 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because that Edom hath dealt against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and hath greatly offended, and revenged himself upon them;
Ezek 25:13 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also stretch out mine hand upon Edom, and will cut off man and beast from it; and I will make it desolate from Teman; and they of Dedan shall fall by the sword.
Ezek 25:14 And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord GOD.
Herod the Great - the one who tried to kill the young child Jesus - was an Edomite.
Gen 36:2 Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite;
The wives had different names in Gen 26. The same wives with different names, or he traded in for newer models?
Gen 26:34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:
The Hittites were descendents of Noah's son, Heth.
The Hittites and the Hivites were enemy nations that were to be driven out of the promised land by Joshua and his people.
Josh 24:11 And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.
So Esau, who was not favored of God, married these strange wives who would produce children and nations that would be enemies of Israel. Remember Jacobs blessing to Esau which said "...by thy sword shalt thou live".
Jesus said:
Mat 26:52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
Gen 36:3 And Bashemath Ishmael's daughter, sister of Nebajoth.
This wife was also called Mahalath.
Gen 28:9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.
Esau also married an Ishmaelite woman. Ishmael was a son of Abraham after the flesh, being the daughter of Sarah's handmaid.
Gen 16:11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
Gen 16:12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
Esau who would live by the sword, joined with a daughter of Ishmael, a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him.
The Edomites and the Ishmaelites would be unstable warlike people. These are the Fathers of the Arab nations who oppose Israel. The prophesy holds true, the descendants think that by removing Israel that they would be free, but the struggle is within themselves.
Gen 36:4 And Adah bare to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bare Reuel;
Gen 36:5 And Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah: these are the sons of Esau, which were born unto him in the land of Canaan.
Gen 36:6 And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob.
Gen 36:7 For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.
Esau chose Mount Seir to be separated from his brother Esau. This is similar to the parting of Abraham and Lot. They needed space apart.
Gen 36:8 Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom.
Gen 36:9 And these are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in mount Seir:
Gen 36:10 These are the names of Esau's sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.
Gen 36:11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.
Gen 36:12 And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau's son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau's wife.
Amalek and the Amalelites
Amalek, Esau's son by the Hititte woman, was a type of evil or the devil. They would not let Israel cross through their land and would come behind them and kill the weak, and the stragglers, and the troubled. Amalek and the devil try to block the way of God's people. They are a continual enemy of God's people and under a curse.
Exo 17:8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
Exo 17:9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.
Exo 17:10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
Exo 17:11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
Exo 17:12 But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
Exo 17:13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
Exo 17:14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
Exo 17:15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi: (Jehovah is my banner)
Saul was to destroy all the Amalekites, but he disobeyed. God removed the anointing from Saul and in the end, an Amalekite killed Saul.
1 Sam 15:3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
1 Sam 15:9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
1 Sam 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
1 Sam 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
Gen 36:13 And these are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife.
Gen 36:14 And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau's wife: and she bare to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.

Gen 36:18 And these are the sons of Aholibamah Esau's wife; duke Jeush, duke Jaalam, duke Korah: these were the dukes that came of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau's wife.
Gen 36:19 These are the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these are their dukes.
Gen 36:20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah,
Gen 36:21 And Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan: these are the dukes of the Horites, the children of Seir in the land of Edom.
Gen 36:22 And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan's sister was Timna.
Gen 36:23 And the children of Shobal were these; Alvan, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.
Gen 36:24 And these are the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father.
Gen 36:25 And the children of Anah were these; Dishon, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.
Gen 36:26 And these are the children of Dishon; Hemdan, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.

Gen 36:30 Duke Dishon, duke Ezer, duke Dishan: these are the dukes that came of Hori, among their dukes in the land of Seir.
Gen 36:31 And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel.
Gen 36:32 And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
Gen 36:33 And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.
Gen 36:34 And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of Temani reigned in his stead.

Gen 36:41 Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon,
Gen 36:42 Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar,
Gen 36:43 Duke Magdiel, duke Iram: these be the dukes of Edom, according to their habitations in the land of their possession: he is Esau the father of the Edomites.
The children of this world have their all in hand, (Material possessions) and nothing in hope, while the children of God have often their all in hope, and next to nothing in hand. But, all things considered, it is better to have Canaan in promise than mount Seir in possession. (Wesley)
2 Cor 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
The place of the battle of Armageddon
Edom (called also "Seir,") Genesis 32:3; 36:8 is the name of the country lying south of the ancient kingdom of Judah, and extending from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Akaba. It includes the ruins of Petra, and is bounded on the north by Moab. Peopled by descendants of Esau Genesis 36:1-9. Edom has a remarkable prominence in the prophetic word as (together with Moab) the scene of the final destruction of Gentile world-power in the day of the Lord. (Scofield)
God keeps careful records. He has a time to bless and a time to take vengence on wrong doers. All must answer to his righteousness. The sons of Esau became the Arab nations. The son of Jacob brought forth the messiah. The two can only get along if they come to Jesus. The sons of Ishmael and of Esau are warlike, full of strife, at war with God's people through Jacob and in strife, one with another. (Gen 16:12, Gen 27:40) These nations have great material wealth and Islam claims to be the chosen or Allah. Death to the infidels, (all others). Jesus came to bring life and to seek and to save those lost in sin. Through Jesus all are made at peace with God and are to love one another.
