Genesis 6

Daughters of man; Sons of God

Gen 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
Gen 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

Who were the Sons of God and the daughters of men? Is this some strange new thing given out of context to what came before? Let's look back at what came before in context.

We have two genealogies, the lineage of Cain, who did not follow God. This is the natural man; building cities, aggressive, seeking pleasures and thinking it a thing of honor to do bad, like Lamech, boasting in being a worse sinner than Cain. These are the ungodly people; the children of cursed men.

The other genealogy comes from Seth, where the people began to inquire of God. The walk of Enoch so pleased God, that he took him. These are the godly people, the sons of God. The sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful and they married them.

2 Cor 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

What happens when those who seek God, instead seek the beautiful cursed women of Cain? Probably both become as natural men, seeking things of this life and not the walk with God.

Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

It upset God to see those who once were seeking him, going the way of Cain and Lamech. He changed the life span; greatly shortening it, removing 800 years off of the life span. The genetic structure was altered, bringing about strange men. This was again a judgement of God.

Gen 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

There were giants in the land, possibly genetic mutants; these were here before the sons of God came into the daughters of men, producing mighty men, well known and honored by men.

Other translations say Nephilim, of the word; giants. Nephilim means: those causing others to fall. Possibly a demonic spirit in humans, that caused others to fall, by following the ways of the devil. These demonic people may have been lovely and the sons of God may have been intimate with them, creating more of the same and degrading the morals and the desire for Gods way. This would cause God to limit them and eventually destroy them.

As Lamech, they were possibly conquerors. Lamech means conqueror. The presence of fallen angels in them may have given them broader abilities, especially in the perversions of Gods original plan. False worship and false thinking, occult charms, to do evil. They had cities, music, things made from metals. Things to seek and desire, more than the knowledge of God. Think of our great cities with all manner of evil entertainment and no thought of God. With men of greater strength and stature, with evil hearts, leading men deeper into sin.

( I am inserting this at a later date because of the teaching of Chuck Missler, who explains the view of actual angels, leaving their first estate, and mating with human women, that produced genetic mutants who were larger and faster than natural man. These were the mighty men of renown. In Greek history we read of the gods mating with humans making great men such as Hercules and Atlas. Every culture seems to have stories of these mutants. Noah was not contaminated, being perfect as a physical human. His family was on the ark and all the earth was flooded to remove these Nephilim. After the flood there were still Nephilim in Canaan, the sons of Anak. Possibly the reason the LORD ordered all to be killed when his people entered the land was to rid the land of these genetic mutants.)

Jude makes mention of fallen angels, that refers to this time on earth.

Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Mythology of Greece has gods mating with women, but this is a myth. Angels are not flesh and blood, nor do they reproduce.

The book of 1Enoch was the source of Judes verses. It is not regarded as inspired scripture, but it is quoted by Jude and Peter.

1Enoch

Chapter 6

1 And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters.
2 And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men ...

Chapter 7

1 And all the others together with them took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms
2and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. And they
3 became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells: Who consumed
4 all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against
5 them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and
6 fish, and to devour one another's flesh, and drink the blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.

Peter refers to the Book of 1Enoch; if...

2 Pet 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

2 Pet 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

Sons of God, referred in the old testament to angels. How could fallen angels produce offspring with women? Angels were not mentioned in the context around Genesis 6. What did Jesus say? Remember when he mentioned Jonah and the fish, that it made the story true. What does Jesus say about angels marrying and producing children with women?

Mat 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

Angels are Spirit beings, that sometimes appear as men. Nowhere else in the Bible does it say they can produce offspring.

I assume that certain men were demon possessed; the Nephilim. The end result was a race of Nephilim and the judgment of God. The angels responsible for this wickedness were chained in darkness and God destroyed the earth and it's people with a flood. Only Noah and his family were saved.

Gen 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

God saw the wickedness of the men on earth, it was great. What men thought as desirable, God saw as evil.

Luke 16:15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

As todays people, many have wicked imaginations and desires, fired by demons of lust, power and pride. Their heart was only evil, continuously. King David sinned, but God said his heart was after God. He repented and sought God. Repentance must come first.

Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Psa 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Psa 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
Psa 51:13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
Psa 51:14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
Psa 51:15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall show forth thy praise.

Gen 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

A better translation would be to say that God was sorry for; sorry for the way mankind became. Repentance of a sinner requires that he be sorry for his sins, but God had no sins, he was not surprised, for he knows all things.

Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
Eph 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Gen 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

The LORD was upset with Israel too. He was about to destroy them, but he had Moses to intercede for them.

Exo 32:9 And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
Exo 32:10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
Exo 32:11 And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?

The LORD found an intercessor, righteous Noah. But, the people would not listen to him.

Elijah the prophet was thinking that he was the only one serving God, but God set him straight.

1 Ki 19:14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

Gen 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

Only Noah and His Family were chosen of God.

Gen 6:9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

2 Pet 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

Noah walked with God and found grace in his sight. He believed in God and His promises. His faith was counted as being just.

Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

Rom 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Gen 6:10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Gen 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
Gen 6:12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
Gen 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Mat 24:37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Mat 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
Mat 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Ezek 14:13 Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:
Ezek 14:14 Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.

Gen 6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
Gen 6:15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
Gen 6:16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
Gen 6:17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
Gen 6:18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

1 Pet 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
1 Pet 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
1 Pet 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
1 Pet 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

Gen 6:19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

Gen 7:9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

This is four; two sets of two. Perhaps two of male and two of female.

Gen 6:20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.
Gen 6:21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

A lot of food was gathered to keep the animals alive for a year.

Gen 6:22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

Noah obeyed God which is why God chose Noah. All others disobeyed God and would perish in the flood. Even today we find more in disobedience, everyone with their own ideas about things.

Rom 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?
Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
Rom 3:5 But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man)
Rom 3:6 God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?
