Hebrews 2

Give heed to salvation

Heb 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

2Ti 2:1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2Ti 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
2Ti 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

Therefore, looking back at what was said. The Son is from heaven, the Son of God and greater than the angels. Angels are sent to minister to the chosen of God. We must give more attention to the living Word, to hear and to do the will of God, lest we fall away from God's truth.

Heb 2:2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;

angels, aggelos, to bring tidings, messengers

Angels delivered messages from God, in the old testament. The angel came to Daniel, showing him things to come. The angel spoke God's message to Moses in the burning bush, the angel Gabriel came to the father of John the Baptist and to Mary announcing what was to come. There are many times that angels brought the word of God. The angel gave the name "Jesus," or Joshua, pronounced Yeshua, "Jehovah is salvation," to Mary. The angels were the messengers of the word, as were the prophets. Under the law there were rewards for obedience and curses on disobedience. (Deut 28)

Heb 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

neglect, bebaioo, careless about, make light of

The Word of God came to earth himself speaking to us in the man-God, Jesus, the Christ. If we neglect his word and turn from the free gift of salvation, how shall we escape the wrath of God? The evidence of salvation are many changed lives, sinners saved by grace. We have the witness of the apostles and the confirmation of God's Spirit within.

Rom 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Heb 2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

Indeed, the miracles of Jesus witness to the authority of Jesus, the disciples of Jesus speak the gospel message with signs following.

Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

The greatest miracle is a new life. Many are healed through faith, and many are delivered from bondage's by faith in the Living Word of God. The gifts of the Spirit of God testify to the power of God and the authority of Jesus our Lord.

Eph 4:7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
Eph 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

We dare not ignore so great a gift and turn aside. Jesus is our salvation.

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Dominion and power

Heb 2:5 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

subjection, hupotasso, primarily a military term, "to rank under" (hupo, "under," tasso, "to arrange"), denotes (a) "to put in subjection,

Jesus, the king of an eternal throne. We shall rule with him and even judge the angels.Angels are not given power to judge, they are messengers.

Rev 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

1 Cor 6:2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
1 Cor 6:3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

Heb 2:6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?
Heb 2:7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:
Heb 2:8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

A Psalm of David

Psa 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
Psa 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
Psa 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
Psa 8:7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
Psa 8:8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

(see Psalm 104)

Adam was given dominion over all the earth, but satan stole the dominion from him. Satan became ruler and god of this world, until Jesus came, the Living Word become flesh. (John 1:14) God, in flesh died to set us free from Satan and arose from death again into eternal life. We have dominion once again over this earth, through Jesus. Satan is also under our feet, he being the chief of the fallen angels, because we are in Christ Jesus, the Holy one of God. Angels are a little higher than man, but Jesus is greater than all.

1 John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
1 John 4:5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
1 John 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

We have the Word of truth and the Spirit of truth and power. Man is lower than the angels, but man, born of God's Spirit is greater.

Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

He suffered for us

Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

should taste, geuomai, to perceive the flavor of, to partake of, to feel

He died for us. Jesus the man, in the flesh made a little lower than the angels. Spirit is higher in order than flesh. Yes, Jesus was created, the man Jesus, but that which made Jesus special was the eternal God, the Word that was the power within. He gave his life so that we may live with him forever.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

His purpose of becoming flesh was to shed his righteous and sinless blood for our sins. He died by the grace of God, grace for our grace. He is crowned with glory at the right hand of the Father.

John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

Heb 2:10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

It was fitting, for the almighty Word of God whom all things belong, and who made all things, also in bringing many of us, as born-again sons unto glory, to make the captain of our salvation, Jesus, the head of the church, perfect through sufferings. The Son of God knows our infirmities, having suffered for us in obedience to His Father.

Heb 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
Heb 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Mat 8:17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

As the captain of our salvation, Jesus led the way. The firstborn of a new creation, bringing many sons to glory. Men and women transformed by the Spirit of God. A new Spirit people, everlasting for the glory of God.

Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Col 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
Col 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
Col 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
Col 1:22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
Col 1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

He is with us

Heb 2:11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

We are one in God's Spirit, for Jesus has sanctified us, made us to be holy and separated unto God, as he is Holy. Think about all that this means for your life. Listen to Jesus' prayer for us.

John 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

The truth of God's word makes us useful for his service and his Spirit in us gives us discernment and power.

John 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
John 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
John 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
John 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee,
John 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Heb 2:12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.

brethren, adelphos, from the womb, literally or figuratively as brothers

Psa 22:22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.

God is our Spiritual father. When we sing praises to God and worship in the midst of the congregation, in church, Jesus is their is the midst with us. Just as he sang in the congregation with the brethren when he walked the earth. We are together in his Spirit. Haleluiah I feel the presence of the Lord. When I am weary, he strengthens me. When I am filled with joy he rejoices with me. The Lord is in our praises.

Heb 2:13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

We trust in our LORD. We ask in prayer for our needs and he is in our midst.

Mat 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Flesh and blood

Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Heb 2:15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

John 8:33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
John 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

Blood was required as payment for sins, by our just and holy God. His word cannot be broken and his will is the way of truth.

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Rom 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Heb 2:16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

Once again it is shown that Jesus had not the nature of angels. He was God, the eternal Word, come as a man of the seed of Abraham. The son of man, after the linage of king David. He did give us the word of God, but he was God the Word, not an angel messenger.

Heb 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
Heb 2:18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

God, who created all things made himself in the likeness of man.

Phil 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Phil 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Phil 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

He knows how it is to be flesh and blood, to grow up from a baby into the business of a carpenter with Joseph. Even as a boy of 12, he knew who his real father was, God in heaven.

Luke 2:49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
Luke 2:50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

Jesus began his priestly ministry at the required age of 30. He knows our feelings and has experienced the needs of the flesh, without sin.

Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

He has reconciled us to the Father; thank you Jesus. We trust you, for through your shed blood we are forgiven of sins and received by God the Father in heaven. We are become children of God, to be in your presence forever.
