Hebrews 3

Heavenly Calling

Heb 3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Heb 3:2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.

Moses was faithful to his calling from God, to lead his people, the Hebrew people from bondage out of Egypt, a type of the world and it's king, to the promise land, a type of heaven. Jesus, God in man, submitted himself to God the Father, to lead a people from all nations out of the bondage of the world and satan, into the promise of a new home in heaven. We follow the Lord, who unlike Moses was obedient in all things and who we follow into God's promises.

Num 20:11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
Num 20:12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

Moses was told to speak to the rock, a symbol of Jesus and it would flow forth with living water. Because he struck the rock a second time he was not allowed to go into the promise land. Jesus, died one time for our sins. He is not to go to the cross again, the work is finished.

Heb 3:3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

Moses was honored as a most humble servant, leading God's nation, All of his people were accounted as God's son, an earthly son. Moses was a part of God's earthly people, the house of Israel. Jesus, is the eternal Son of God from heaven, who created men and chose Israel as his people by which came his promises.

Heb 3:4 For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.

Jesus created all things.

Heb 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Heb 3:5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
Heb 3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

Moses was a faithful servant of God and leader of his people. Jesus is also a faithful servant, the creator of the church, to all who trust in him, who is the head of the church, the creator of all things and the one who owns all things. Wicked men choose to be separated by wicked deeds.

John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Those who believe and trust in Jesus are called out of the world and sanctified unto God. We have a heavenly shepherd who brings us to heavenly places, in himself.

Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Eph 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Harden not your hearts

Heb 3:7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

2 Cor 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

Heb 3:8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

Do not put off obeying and receiving Jesus, you may not have another chance. The more we say no to God, the harder our hearts become. Our hearts grow hard also from fear: fear and unbelief go together.

2 Tim 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Heb 3:9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.

The children brought out of bondage from Egypt, still were filled with fear and unbelief. Friends, we must trust God, and receive his word as truth. He is not pleased with grumbling and unbelief.

Php 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Php 2:14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
Php 2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

Heb 3:10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.

Know God through his word. He honors his word. Pray in his word, believe in him and he will never fail you. Fear and unbelief do not please God.

Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Heb 3:11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
Heb 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

Where can we go from the Lord? only to self will and the corruption of the flesh.

Rom 11:18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.
Rom 11:19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
Rom 11:20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
Rom 11:21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.

Heb 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Don't judge me! So many say this. Wait, exhorting is to get you back where you belong. Do not let your hardened heart also harden your head. Do right and do not complain at God and those who serve him.

Rom 2:3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
Rom 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
Rom 2:5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
Rom 2:6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

Be stedfast, believing

Heb 3:14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

This is saying we must keep believing in our Lord. Once saved always saved? Yes, if we remain steadfast to the end. We do not have to go forward and be saved week after week, it is a one time shedding of Christ's blood for our salvation. His part is finished, we come to him by faith and we continue with him by faith.

John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
John 10:30 I and my Father are one.

Which is it? He keeps us, or is it our faith? He keeps us by grace through our faith. John simplified this for us. Remember in the last days there will be a great falling away, the apostasy. John addressed the issue of those who fall away.

1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

We are not to judge anyone before the time. I myself could easily have been counted with those that John speaks of, but the Lord received me back. The blood shed, still covered me as I trusted in him. Our work is to trust, by faith and to continue. Trust and obey.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Trust in Jesus, he gives us grace for salvation and grace to continue with him. We dare not trust in any other thing.

Heb 3:15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
Heb 3:16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
Heb 3:17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?
Heb 3:18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
Heb 3:19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

The children of Israel had to trust as we do, but they did not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us grace to continue. If we fall away, we have no more excuse then did those who complained and had no faith in the desert march to the promised land. They had the visible presence of the Lord in the cloud by day and the fire by night. They lost out because they had no faith. A journey of months turned into a death march of forty years, for they would not believe God and go into His promises.

Psa 95:10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:
Psa 95:11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

Unbelief is the unforgivable sin.

Rom 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

In the last days hearts will grow hard because of sin and many will fall away from the truth.

Mat 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Mat 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
Mat 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
