Hebrews 9

Sanctuary

Heb 9:1 Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.

Divine service was in ceremonial laws, that were a type and shadow of that which is in heaven. A worldly tabernacle was the place of worship under the old covenant. The first tabernacle was a tent.

The tabernacle was a tent 45 feet (15 meters) long, 15 feet (5 meters) wide, and 15 feet (5 meters) high, divided into two rooms. The larger room (the first part) was a 15 feet (5 meter) by 30 feet (10 meter) “holy place.” Behind the second veil was the smaller room was a 15 feet (5 meter) by 15 feet (5 meter), called the Holiest of All. (Guzik)

The temple of Solomon was glorious, rebuilt by Zerubbabel and repaired and added onto by Herod.

Heb 9:2 For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the showbread; which is called the sanctuary.

(see Exodus 25:31-40)

The candlestick, or lampstand, was made of pure gold and had a center candle, with three branches on each side holding candles. It was the only light in the first part of the tabernacle, the sanctuary. Jesus is the light.

John 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

We are to be in his light and give it to the world.

The lamp stand had oil with wicks in them, to burn and make light. The candlestand is a type of the spiritual witness of the church in the world. Remember the parable of the ten virgins? Five of them missed out when the Lord came, because they had not taken care of their spiritual life. (Mat 25:1-13)

Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Mat 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Rev 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

There was a table of acacia wood, about eighteen by thirty-six inches by twenty-seven inches high. It was overlaid with gold. It represented the physical and devine nature of Jesus Christ. It had four gold rings so that staves or poles could be used to carry it when moving in the wilderness.

Exo 25:23 Thou shalt also make a table of shittim (acacia) wood: two cubits shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.
Exo 25:24 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, and make thereto a crown of gold round about.
Exo 25:25 And thou shalt make unto it a border of an hand breadth round about, and thou shalt make a golden crown to the border thereof round about.
Exo 25:26 And thou shalt make for it four rings of gold, and put the rings in the four corners that are on the four feet thereof.

Upon the table were the two rows of six loafs of bread. Each loaf representing a tribe of Israel. Being on the golden table was as being in close fellowship with the Lord.

Exo 25:30 And thou shalt set upon the table showbread before me alway.

Remember the story of a hungry David who ate the showbread? That was showbread that had been replaced by fresh bread.

1 Sam 21:6 So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

Jesus is the bread of life, the Living word. Old bread nourishes the body, but new bread, is as the new eating of the word each day. It is pleasing to the Lord and keeps us close to him.

Holy of holies

Heb 9:3 And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;

Exo 26:36 And thou shalt make an hanging for the door of the tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework.

The second veil, was many curtains, separating the sanctuary from the holy of holies. wherein was the ark of the covenant and the spirit of the LORD.

Exo 26:30 And thou shalt rear up the tabernacle according to the fashion thereof which was showed thee in the mount.
Exo 26:31 And thou shalt make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made:
Exo 26:32 And thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of shittim wood overlaid with gold: their hooks shall be of gold, upon the four sockets of silver.
Exo 26:33 And thou shalt hang up the veil under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the veil the ark of the testimony: and the veil shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy.

Heb 9:4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;
Heb 9:5 And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

The golden censer was the place of sweet smelling incense to the Lord. This is in heaven too, as described in Revelation.

Rev 8:3 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.

The ark of the covenant contained three holy remembrances: Manna, the food supplied by God each morning in the wilderness, Aaron's rod that budded, showing his favor as priest and the ten commandments on tables of stone. Cherubim's were over the ark, in gold representing the presence of God and the mercy seat, where blood is applied for forgiveness. Jesus is our mercy seat and the seraphim's are in the presence of God continually. Isaiah spoke of these in a vision of God's throne room.

Isa 6:1 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
Isa 6:2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
Isa 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

The ark of the covenant had the glory of God in its presence. This was God's holy place on earth, as in heaven. Now, the holy place is in the hearts of those who are his.

Heb 9:6 Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.
Heb 9:7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

Heb 4:14  Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
Heb 4:15  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
  Heb 4:16  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Heb 2:17  Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.  Holy Ghost

Heb 9:8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:

The Holy Ghost made it known that free access to the Holy place of God, was denied to all but the High priest, as long as this first tabernacle of the old covenant was in place.

Heb 9:9 Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

All the sacrifices and rituals were not enough to make the High priest pure, the Holy Ghost witnessed to him that he was not yet made perfect and that all that was done in these ceremonies were symbolic of something to come.

Heb 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

Outward ceremonies cannot change the heart. The time of reformation is referred to by Jesus as the time of regeneration.

Col 2:13  And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
  Col 2:14  by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Mar 7:1  Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem,
Mar 7:2  they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed.
Mar 7:3  (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders,
  Mar 7:4  and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.)
Mar 7:5  And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?”
Mar 7:6  And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
Mar 7:7  in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
Mar 7:8  You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

Pure conscience

Heb 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

What was the tabernacle that Jesus ministered in as high priest? First, it was the temple of his body and secondly it was the very presence of God the Father.

Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

He was the sacrifice, the Son of God in the man Jesus for our sins. He is also the high priest who had access to the heavenly holy of holies. He brought his sacrificial blood to the throne room of God. Only he could do this, for he came from this place to earth, for this purpose.

Heb 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

This was ceremonial cleansing of the flesh.

Heb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Jesus accomplished a greater cleansing, the cleansing of the conscience. This being the God given ability to know right from wrong. The Holy Spirit works in the conscience to convict of sin.

Acts 23:1 And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

Acts 24:16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

All men are convicted of sin through their conscience.

1 Tim 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1 Tim 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

Jesus restores the conscience, with wisdom from above.

2 Cor 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
2 Cor 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

1 Tim 1:5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

A pure heart and a good conscience are the result of Jesus' Spiritual cleansing. No longer do we serve rituals and shadows, but we serve God in truth, because Jesus has offered an eternal sacrifice on the everlasting holy place of God, for you and for me. Believe in Jesus, he is the only way of cleansing. He is the way to God, receive him while you are still able to.

New Testament

Heb 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Jesus, the mediator, the go between, through his life and death he fulfilled the requirements of the old covenant so that those who are called might receive an eternal inheritance.

Heb 9:16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

When a person dies, his estate goes to those he has named in his will; the last will and testament. The testament does not go in affect until after the death of the person.

Heb 9:17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
Heb 9:18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

The death and shed blood of God's son, Jesus, brought into affect the new testament.

Mat 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

2 Cor 3:5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
2 Cor 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

The law condemned, Jesus brought grace and forgiveness to those who are the called.

Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Rom 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
Rom 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
Rom 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
Rom 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
Rom 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Blood required

Heb 9:18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

The new testament was by blood, a better sacrifice; the Lord Jesus Christ. Blood was necessary for the old testament as well.

Heb 9:19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, Blood was required in ceremonial cleansing, under the old testament.

Heb 9:20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.
Heb 9:21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.
Heb 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Blood is required for the removal of sin and purification. The old testament used the blood of animals. The new testament was in the blood of Jesus. Can we be our own atonement, will our shed blood remove sin? No, absolutely not. We are saved through faith in Jesus, who shed his blood for us. Anything else is of the devil. Jesus saves us from our sins.

Patterns

Heb 9:23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

The earthly sanctuary had to be purified with the blood of animals as a pattern, a type and shadow of that which is in heaven. These patterns given through Moses, who spoke face to face with the presence of God, were followed in obedience. In the same way today, we follow the Bible, God's word in obedience, for it is the pattern by which our lives our conducted, the mind of Christ.

Heb 9:24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
Heb 9:25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;
Heb 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

The heavenly sanctuary, not made with human hands, received the blood of the Lamb of God, a one time sacrifice for all time. The blood of animals only covered sin until new sin appeared, then another sacrifice was required. Not so with our Lord. He suffered and shed his blood one time, for all sin and shame. He was the most excellent and perfect sacrifice, for all time. The sacrifice is applied to our hearts through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, who not only was the perfect sacrifice, but he has risen from the grave and is our eternal high priest. He would know more than anyone the cost of our redemption. He bought us from satan's power and made us spiritual children of God. All those who are the called and elect of God.

John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
John 1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

This verse alone refutes the belief in reincarnation. We do not get a second chance. To be born again is not a new physical birth, but a new birth of God's Spirit within your heart. Satan has many schemes to cause us to rely on our own thoughts and to not obey God's word. His aim is to steal, kill and destroy. Jesus came to give more abundant life and life everlasting.

Heb 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Are we looking for him? He is coming for those who are looking for him. He will appear, without sin, nor will he bring our sins back to us to torment us. This is what the devil tries to do. Our sins are removed, our shame is gone, he has removed them, they are gone. We are saved by our great high priest who will come to gather his people unto himself.

Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Titus 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
