The Vineyard
Isa 5:1 Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:
God sings to his beloved, a song and a parable. The vineyard planted in a very fruitful Hill. God's people planted in Jerusalem, were his beloved.
Isa 5:2 And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.
God protected the city and it's people, the place was given the choicest word of God; the law and the prophets. The people were to share the word of God and bring forth fruit. There should have been an abundance of good fruit, but instead they brought forth wild grapes. They went to a different seed, the seed of false gods and false beliefs.
Isa 5:3 And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.
Isa 5:4 What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?
God provided the seed of his word, His presence was in the temple and yet the people willfully disobeyed him. God does not force people to serve him. What more could he do? The fruit was wild, inferior, as if God had not planted his seed on fertile ground. The people behaved like pagans in the midst of Gods blessings and provision for them. America fits this description; we are ripe for judgment.
Protection removed
Isa 5:5 And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:
Isa 5:6 And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
Psa 80:15 And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest strong for thyself.
Psa 80:16 It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.
Psa 80:17 Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself.
Psa 80:18 So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.
Psa 80:19 Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
Woe to a people who have rejected the covering of God! He will remove the hedge, his protection, the forces of evil will intrude it's borders. The vineyard shall be eaten up, the people pillaged and destroyed. The wall of protection, the defenses of the country shall be compromised, the enemy will come and destroy. The same shall happen to a person who leaves the vine, who goes out in sin and rejects the Lord. A person who will not repent of sins, even though others have tried to restore them.
1 Cor 5:1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
1 Cor 5:2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
1 Cor 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
1 Cor 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
1 Cor 5:6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
What of a people of God in a sinful nation?
Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Psa 25:20 O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.
Many discouraged children of God wish the LORD would stop pruning, stop digging, stop watering. Those things may be hard, but it is even worse when the LORD stops doing them. (Guzik)
Isa 5:7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.
Justice and righteousness had left the city of Jerusalem. God was forced to withdraw from them. They would not repent, so they must reap the fruit of their doings. They did not want God in their lives, so God removes his protection from them.
1 Pet 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
When we leave God, the lion comes to devour. If we draw close to God and resist the lion, he will flee.
Our plans and His
Isa 5:8 Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!
Real estate developers, who build many houses close together, hoping to become rich on their investment. Often the desire for gain does not take into account the need for places untouched by hands. We need places to be alone with God; gardens, wide spaces of trees or wilderness, These are the places Jesus retreated to for prayer. This is where I go to be alone with God.
Luke 5:15 But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
Luke 5:16 And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
John 18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.
John 18:2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.
Sometimes the devil follows us into the wilderness.
Mat 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
Mat 4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered.
We bring the word of God with us.
1 Pet 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
1 Pet 5:9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.
We need places to go to concentrate on the Lord, his promises and the direction of our life. We want to love him and to be servants with our whole heart.
Isa 5:9 In mine ears said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.
True prosperity is of the LORD. If we leave God out of our plans, often the plans do not prosper. Even when we serve the Lord, our plans may not prosper; if we do His will, we prosper.
3 John 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
Isa 5:10 Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer shall yield an ephah.
Ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath: a bath is seven and a half gallons of grape juice...not very much for so many acres of vines.
Ezek 45:10 Ye shall have just balances, and a just ephah, and a just bath.
The bath is a liquid measure, the ephod, of dry goods, such as grain. Each are to be a tenth of a homer.
Ezek 45:11 The ephah and the bath shall be of one measure, that the bath may contain the tenth part of an homer, and the ephah the tenth part of an homer: the measure thereof shall be after the homer.
Ezek 45:12 And the shekel shall be twenty gerahs: twenty shekels, five and twenty shekels, fifteen shekels, shall be your maneh.
The seed of a homer; eight bushels of seed produce only an ephah, which is three-fifths of a bushel. Better put; from Ezekial, a homer yielded only a shekel, a tenth of the seed planted.
If we wish to prosper, let it be in the Lord, not in silver and gold. He is our abundance and our provision. Sow with the Lord's blessings and come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.
A self indulgent people
Isa 5:11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!
Lev 10:9 Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:
Strong drink keeps God separated from you, so drink becomes your god, in whom you trust. It will bring destruction to you.
Isa 5:12 And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.
2 Tim 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 Tim 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2 Tim 3:3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
2 Tim 3:4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
Psa 5:4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.
Psa 5:5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
Isa 5:13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.
Deu 28:15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
Deu 28:16 Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.
Deu 28:41 Thou shalt beget sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them; for they shall go into captivity.
Isa 5:14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.
Isa 3:8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.
Isa 3:9 The show of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.
Mat 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Isa 5:15 And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:
Isa 5:16 But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.
Isa 2:11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
Psa 99:9 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.
Rom 2:5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
Rom 2:6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
Rom 2:7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
Rom 2:8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
Rom 2:9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
Rom 2:10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
Rom 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
If we live a life of our own pleasures and desires, we will be separated from God and the enemy will be allowed to take us captive. We should not use our times of peace and prosperity for fleshly lusts. Keep close to God; obey his word, take delight in the Lord, do not act as if he does not exist, for judgment shall follow.
Woe to a people calling evil good
Isa 5:17 Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
Isa 32:14 Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks;
Lam 5:2 Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens. Judgment shall come to evil doers; Jerusalem will be barren and wandering tribes shall bring sheep to graze on their lands and strangers shall inhabit their places.
Isa 5:18 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:
Dragging sin along with them, burdened by it but not wanting to let go in repentance. Often those who are full of iniquity and fear, resort to alcohol or other things and reject the counsel of God's word.
Psa 94:4 How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?
Psa 94:5 They break in pieces thy people, O LORD, and afflict thine heritage.
Psa 94:6 They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
Psa 94:7 Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.
Psa 94:8 Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?
Psa 94:9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
Psa 94:10 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?
Psa 94:11 The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.
Isa 5:19 That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!
Where is God? Make speed to judge us, if there is a God. In defiance they call on God...If I have sinned strike me dead? See, I am still standing, where is this God?
2 Pet 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
2 Pet 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
2 Pet 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
2 Pet 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
2 Pet 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
Isa 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
As in our land, evil is being called good and good evil. They have lost God's holy judgment. They call darkness good: sorcery and witchcraft is accepted and good is called evil. The Bible is outlawed and not taught in schools. Perversion is being taught along with tolerance of sinful ways. The way of the Lord is spoken of as evil. Wicked means good and bad means they like it.
Prov 17:15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
Mat 6:23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
Luke 16:15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
Isa 5:21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
Prov 26:12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Woe to those who are wiser in their own eyes than God. Who put their own words as being more important than the word of God. God is not mocked, their judgment will come. Pray for our people who are in this condition today.
Corrupt Leaders
Isa 5:22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:
Isa 28:7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
Isa 5:23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!
Exo 23:6 Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause.
Exo 23:7 Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.
Exo 23:8 And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.
Prov 24:24 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:
Isa 5:24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
Job 21:17 How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
Job 21:18 They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.
Num 15:31 Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.
Israel had God's laws to obey. They were sworn to a covenant to obey the laws or to be under a curse. In the New Covenant, a born-again believer has the laws written on his heart. To disdobey God would bring the conviction of the Holy Ghost.
Rom 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
2 Cor 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart.
God sends judgment
Isa 5:25 Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
God's judgment; they wanted to worship false god's and to live in sin and drunkenness, so God brought wrath upon them according their covenant with Him.
Isa 5:26 And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly:
God also used foreign nations to come against them, as part of his discipline upon them. He will hiss unto them, he will whistle to them, to alert them. Perhaps as an owner would say to a dog; sic em!
Isa 5:27 None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken:
Isa 5:28 Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses' hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind.
God was for this, so the enemy nations would come with power unhindered by Him.
Rom 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Isa 5:29 Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions: yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.
1 Pet 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Isa 5:30 And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.
Jer 6:23 They shall lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, set in array as men for war against thee, O daughter of Zion.
Why should God help a people who forsake him?
