King of the Jews
John 19:1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
He was whipped with a multiple whip with chunks of glass and metal. The result was deep and severe wounds, often exposing the bones. The beating alone can kill a man, but they stopped short of this. These were Romans, the Hebrews put a limit to the number of stripes, the Romans did not. This brought much suffering and blood was spilled to the floor. This blood was for our healing. God required blood as the price for sin.
Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
We are healed in our hearts, our soul and our infirmities. Our sins are removed by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Mat 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
Mat 27:25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
John 19:2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
John 19:3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
The crown of thorns pushed into his head, brought forth blood for the healing of our minds and our curses. Thorns were part of the curse which came when Adam fell. Jesus died to remove our curses, he was the last Adam, a spiritual man from heaven. He was also a king, the purple robe was to mock him, but he was a king after David.
Thorns were the curse
Gen 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Gen 3:18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
Gen 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
King after David
2 Sam 7:16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
John 19:4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
John 19:5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
Pilate was thinking that once they saw the ravaged body of Jesus that they would be satisfied with the punishment. For Pilate had seen no fault in him. The punishment was on a man with no faults, no sins before man or God. He was a perfect sinless man.
John 19:6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
The envious chief priests exerting their power to put down a rival. They were putting God's son on trial, they were in trouble. As leaders they would be held accountable for this terrible sin against God.
John 19:7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
Jesus did not meet their perception of the law. The sin was theirs; lack of faith, not knowing the God of the law and grace, nor the Father. He chided them at an earlier time.
John 8:19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
John 19:8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
Pilate was beginning to see something was wrong, something of importance.
John 19:9 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
John 19:10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
John 19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
Who had the greater sin? We were all guilty, sin brought Jesus, yet some would receive a more severe condemnation. To not receive Jesus is to be condemned. Jesus obeyed and allowed this, but had access to all power.
Mat 26:53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
Mat 26:54 But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
John 19:12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
The Jewish leaders were blackmailing Pilate. If you let Jesus go, we will accuse you of supporting another king against Caesar. Pilate was more concerned with his position of power as were the chief priests. Selfish ambition would place Jesus on the cross. The cross was to pay for our sins. The proud have their own security in money and earthly authority. They wanted to kill Jesus to retain their influence. The end result would be to face judgment and eternal torment. We must see all things as to the eternal values. Will our decisions be for God's glory? Or for momentary self pleasure?
John 19:13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Jesus would face the judgment seat of Rome, facing Pilate. Pilate would face the judgment seat of God, facing Jesus. He too would be speechless, he had willingly betrayed the Son of God.
John 19:14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
The sixth hour Roman time. It was 6.A.M.
John 19:15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
The chief priests openly shouted that their God was not their king. Caesar is our king! They chose the world and Caesar. They claimed to represent Moses and the law. Moses left the earthly king and worldly things to join with the Jews, God's covenant people. These priest preferred Caesar to the God as king. So blinded were they in seeking to destroy Jesus, that they completely separated from God. Yet the would continue to look the part of relifious leaders. They fit in with the Pharisees that John the Baptist had rebuked earlier.
Mat 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
Mat 23:30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
Mat 23:31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
Mat 23:32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
Mat 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
John 19:16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
John 19:17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
John 19:18 Where they crucified him, and two others with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
John 19:19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
John 19:20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
John 19:21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
John 19:22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
The Jews had their opinion, Pilate had his. The sign was in the tongues of the people who would come to the passover. At Pentecost the tongues of the people would come, as a sign. Jesus would send his Holy Spirit. The Lord will return again with this title.
Rev 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and he has saved me from my sins and curses.
It is finished
John 19:23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
Jesus was stripped naked, baring our shame on the cross. His stripes were plainly visible, and by the those stripes we were healed. His clothing was divided in four parts. Four represents the flesh, the natural man who suffered as we would suffer, but without sin. He bore our sins on the cross. The object of interest was the seamless coat. The Bible, the word of God, is one continuous story of mans sin and his redemption. Jesus was the end of the story, the focus, for in him our sins our forgiven. He is the culmination of our faith and hope. In him we are forgiven and reconciled to God, his father. The seamless garment was as that of the High Priest, for He is the Great High Priest.
Exo 28:31 And thou shalt make the robe of the ephod all of blue.
Exo 28:32 And there shall be an hole in the top of it, in the midst thereof: it shall have a binding of woven work round about the hole of it, as it were the hole of an habergeon, that it be not rent.
John 19:24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
Even in this act, God was fulfilling the scriptures.
Psa 22:16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
Psa 22:17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
Psa 22:18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
John 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Three Mary's and Jesus' mothers sister.
John 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
John 19:27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Jesus was looking out for his mother, still caring about others needs in his time of total torment. What a savior. Mary had sons and daughters.
Mat 13:54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
Mat 13:55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
Mat 13:56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?
What these verses say, is that Jesus had family. But most did not believe in him. So when Jesus was on the cross, he gave John, his friend, the responsibility to take care of his mother.
Mark 3:31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.
Mark 3:32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.
Mark 3:33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?
Mark 3:34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
Mark 3:35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
Perhaps even greater than the pain and humility was the spiritual separation as a result of receiving our sins. For a moment God the Father could not look upon the sins he carried. This brought forth an anguished cry from Jesus. This was also a fulfillment of prophecy.
Psa 22:1 To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
Mat 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
Earlier, Jesus refused a strong drink which was meant to be as a pain killer. Pain killers can be addictive, a sin. Jesus would not go that way.
Mark 15:23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.
John 19:29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
The vinegar was diluted wine vinegar, watered down. With this he was able to wet his mouth enough to make one last statement.
John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
It was finished. He had bore our sins on the cross. His blood was the eternal atonement necessary to be forgiven of sin. All roads leading to God must come through the cross. If not? there is no coming to God.
He himself gave up the ghost, the Spirit. He had power to give up his life and power to take it again.
John 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
There were signs following, as reported in Matthew's gospel account.
Mat 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
Mat 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
Mat 27:53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
Mat 27:54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
Perhaps they were thinking, lets just tidy up this offense, so we can go on being religious. But, they could not cover up what had happened. Their lives would never be the seem. Rome, whose king they had chosen, at 70A.D., would come in and remove their temple and crucify thousands of their own young men. They rejected God's best and reaped their choice. The other choice is satan, who seeks to steal, kill and destroy.
John 19:32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
John 19:33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
This too was a fulfillment of prophecy. Jesus was the Passover Lamb, not a bone shall be broken. The High Priests mnay have been making sure that this was not the Messiah, for if a bone was broken, he could not fulfill the prophecy concerning him.
Exo 12:46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.
John 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
The fountain that cleanses us from sin. Blood removes our sins, and water was used in ceremonial cleansing. These also are symbols of the new covenant. Blood for the atoning of sins and baptism in water representing the death of the old man and the resurrection of the new life in the Spirit.
John 19:35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
John was eye witness, giving many details and having remained by his side throughout.
1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
1 John 1:2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
1 John 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
John 19:36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
Psa 34:20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
John 19:37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
Zec 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
John 19:38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
Joseph, a secret Christian, openly requests the body of Jesus. He was a rich man and would bury Jesus in his own cave tomb. This too fulfilled prophecy.
Isa 53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Jesus died with the wicked, the two thieves on either side. One had believed on Jesus and was forgiven.
Luke 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
John 19:39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
Another secret follower of Jesus, a Pharisee, the one who came to Jesus in John chapter three. Jesus told him that he must be born again. Now he shows his love and respect bringing spices for burial.
John 19:40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
John 19:41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
Jesus was not to be corrupted by being placed with dead men's bones. He himself would not see corruption.
Psa 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
John 19:42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
The beginning of Passover would start soon, as the sun was soon to set. So the grave being nearby was a good thing, all was in order. Our Lord Jesus Christ had fulfilled his ministry by shedding his blood for our sins. Many prophecies were fulfilled at this time. Jesus had prophesied his death, and on the third day?
