Luke 9

Power and authority

Luke 9:1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

This was the will of the Father, for Jesus on earth was to do nothing apart from the Father's will. This was a special anointing for service. Two things from this I see. First, Jesus gives us special anointings for the work he has called us to do. If he asks us to do something, he will supply what is needed. Secondly, this was the power of the Holy Ghost, but it would not be permanent until after Pentecost, when the Holy Ghost was given to believers.

Son's of thunder

Luke 9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?

These brothers were wanting to defend the Lord's honor, but were instead an offense. We sometimes are so eager to serve God and to show his glory, but do we destroy others? Elijah called fire down to show the glory of God over the pagan god Baal. The fire consumed the sacrifice, whereas Baal could do nothing. Elijah himself killed the prophets of Baal.

1 Ki 18:40 And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

We sometimes are quick to draw the sword to defend the Lord, as did Peter.

Mat 26:52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
Mat 26:53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

The fire we bring down on people comes from our own tongue.

James 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
James 3:7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
James 3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
James 3:9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
James 3:10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

The fire of God falls on believers for purifying and service, not on unbelievers.

1 Pet 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
1 Pet 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

Luke 9:55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
Luke 9:56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

He rebuked them. We are not to condemn people but to save them. Jesus would give his life for sinners, not for the rghteous. The Spirit of God is long-suffering and gentle.

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Gal 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

What manner of spirit are we? Are we as Jesus to sacrifice ourselves to bring others to salvation? Our sacrifice may be in long-suffering, in love shown in hours spent witnessing for him. Will we use our own glory to destroy another? What spirit are we of?

They went to another village and they planted the seed of God's word. Perhaps another would would come to those who were afraid to come to Jesus and show them the way to life? Maybe you will be the one another trusts and you will do the work of Jesus? Show forth his fruit, He will build his church. We are not sent to destroy but to give life to as many as would receive our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the way. We must get out of the way; and show Jesus to them.

Peter was an example of a disciple who wished to serve God, but he was not yet converted. He had not yet the permanent indwelling of God's Holy Spirit.

Luke 22:31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
Luke 22:32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

We are not of Jesus until we receive his Holy Spirit. You may be earnest in your religion, but without the anointing from God to have power from him, you are not his.

Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Luke 9:2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

First they were to preach the gospel of the kingdom, then with signs following. They were to heal the sick and cast out demons.

Luke 9:3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.

Take nothing for your journey, including the normal necessities; staves, a rod or staff, scrip, a wallet for money. No bread, no money; only one coat. The Lord would provide, but don't neglect the necessary coat, as the weather required this.

Luke 9:4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.

The homes who received them would meet there needs.

Mat 10:40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
Mat 10:41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
Mat 10:42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Mat 10:13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

Luke 9:5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

The Jews would shake the dust off of their feet after returning from Gentile land. The disciples were sent to the people of Israel, but those who would not receive them were to be considered as outside of the will of God, infidels.

Mat 10:15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Luke 9:6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

They obeyed the Lord's command. This is important, for we are to believe and obey. As the hymn goes, we are to trust and obey for there is no other way to be happy (blessed) in Jesus, but to trust and obey. They believed and did as they were commanded. Do we believe God's word for us? What should we be doing to be blessed of God?

Herod

Luke 9:7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

Herod was governor of that region of the Roman empire. He heard of the works of Jesus and was perplexed, he was unable to understand what was happening. Some were saying that this was John the Baptist, risen from the grave.

Luke 9:8 And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.

Some were saying that Jesus was Elijah the prophet and others; a prophet of old was risen again. Interesting how many people were quick to say that Jesus was someone else, risen from the dead, and yet so few would believe him when he told them that he would go to the cross, die, and be risen again on the third day. People are willing to believe any story but the truth of who Jesus is and what he came to do. Perhaps because satan controls the people and Jesus came to destroy the power of satan and set them free. Satan does not want you or them to know this. He controls by lies.

John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Luke 9:9 And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

Mat 14:3 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.
Mat 14:4 For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
Mat 14:5 And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
Mat 14:6 But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
Mat 14:7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
Mat 14:8 And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

Now Herod was curious to meet this one they call Jesus. Perhaps he would do a miracle for him to see? The miracle of God is that he has come to be the sacrifice so that whosoever will believe in him may receive everlasting life. The miracle of a new birth into God's kingdom. With sins forgiven we are made the righteousness of Christ. That is the miracle that all must see and believe.

Apostles

Luke 9:10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.

The disciples who were sent out to preach the kingdom, heal the sick and to cast out demons, had returned with stories to tell. When these returned they were called "apostles," because they were sent out on a mission with authority and a message to preach. They were sent out from Jesus.

Jesus took them to a wilderness place to hear them share. Jesus wants to hear of our labors for him, he cares about people. These were the people he came to save. One person cannot reach all the people. He wants us to witness for him, especially now that he has returned to God the Father.

Luke 9:11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

This was to be a friendly sharing time in the wilderness, perhaps around a campfire; but the people came out to see him, a lot of people. Jesus witnessed to them of the kingdom of God, and healed all who needed healing. He never missed an opportunity, though the apostles may have had others plans. Sometimes we must put "our plans" on hold when opportunities to witness come.

2 Tim 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2 Tim 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
2 Tim 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Luke 9:12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

Perhaps the twelve wanted time alone to share with Jesus and to be ministered too personally. They said to him; send them away, It is getting towards evening. Let these people go for food and lodging, for we are in the wilderness. Do we tell the master what to do? We should never command our Lord, but rather ask for his will to be known.

Loaves and Fishes

Luke 9:13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

Jesus commands them to feed the people. They looked at what they had, not much, 5 loaves of barley bread and two fish. We need to buy more food. Often we just do not know how to do something, we are limited, but God is not limited, if he requires something from us, he will provide.

Luke 9:14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

Five thousand people to feed and so little food. Now Jesus commands them again. Have them sit in groups of fifties. God is a God of order. If left as a big mob of people the strong would rush forward and the weak ones would go without food. I strong man could take the whole five loafs and two fish.

Luke 9:15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.
Luke 9:16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

Jesus blessed the food, giving thanks to the Father. He broke the food up and gave them to the disciples to serve.

Luke 9:17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

A great miracle. God uses what we have if we trust him and he multiplies it for his purpose. Twelve baskets of fragments were left over. Nothing was wasted and there was a basket for each of the disciples, for their own meal. The servants of God are provided for, even though they seek no personal gain.

What can be said that you have not heard about this story? Just remember, that God will use whatever you give him, if he requires it of you. He also will use your obedience to glorify God and give you an increase. I like that.

What do others say

Luke 9:18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?

Following the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus and his disciples were alone and praying. I imagine them up on a mountain, it is late and the crowds are sleeping. Perhaps they were warming by a fire praying and sharing of the apostles experiences amidst the people, witnessing and healing. I can see Jesus lying on his back, looking up at the stars, all were now reclining. Jesus asked them a question. Whom say the people that I am? Do they know Jesus and why he came and who he was? I myself ask this question as a beginning to witnessing to someone seeking God. Are you seeking? Have you heard of Jesus and do you know why he came?

Luke 9:19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.

The people did not know, they thought Jesus was a resurrected prophet. So many do not know today who Jesus is. They know that he is not welcome in our cities and our government, but they do not know the spiritual reason, Jesus is Lord and the world serves the devil.

Luke 9:20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

Each must answer this question. Who do you think Jesus is? Luke briefly mentions that Peter answered correctly. Matthew tells us more;

Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Mat 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

I believe this is the only place where Peter is called the rock. Was Peter called the rock? Everywhere else, God is the Rock, Jesus is the Rock. Jesus is the foundation of the church. Jesus is the head of the church. Never in any other place is Peter spoken of as the one with all the power from heaven. Jesus gave all power and authority to his disciples for ministry, especially after the Holy Ghost was given.

Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

It is our relationship to Jesus that brings to us God's power. His power works in us to do his will. We are not to be like those of the world, using our power to rule over people. God's power rules over satan and his powers. Our manner of life is to be as a servant to others.

Mark 10:44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

Earlier, when the multitude gathered and it was late, the disciples told them to go. Jesus said feed them, meet there needs. Jesus showed miracles, but he also showed a servants heart. He put the needs of the crowd above his own needs of rest and fellowship. All power is given unto Jesus and he was meek and gentle, a servant giving himself for us. Jesus is the Lord of peace, our best friend.

Luke 9:21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;

He commanded the disciples not to tell others that he was the Messiah, the savior from God. His time was not yet come.

What do others say? Does it matter if people do not see you and I as a person of God's power, a child of God? It is best to be a humble servant, not seeking to have prominence. Perhaps then they will see Jesus, not us. Jesus knew who he was and why he came. All need to know Him, He is the hope of eternal life.

Your Cross

Luke 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

This is our gospel, the good news. Jesus came to die on the cross, rejected by the religious leaders, and to be raised on the third day. What does this mean? It means that he paid for our sins in full. No matter how many, how bad or how long you have sinned, They are paid in full through the work of Jesus Christ. Who is this man? He is the sinless son of Almighty God, our Savior. Through trusting Him, we are forgiven of all sins and curses and translated into God's kingdom of Light.

Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

What should we do after so great a salvation?

Heb 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

Let us not forget the price that was paid for our sins. We cannot save ourselves. Some cultures have a custom, that when someone saves another's life, that the one saved becomes the servant of the savior. This is what we are to do. We are servants of the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. If you will follow Jesus, you must deny yourself. Deny your thoughts and your ways and take up your cross daily. This is not a one time thing. Salvation is one time, AND it is for every day and forever. We can never repay the price paid for sin, but we can remove ourselves from the life of sin and serve our Lord and Savior. We are to deny our self, dying to self and living for God requires that we take up our cross -- daily.

Luke 9:24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

Give up the old way of life for the new life in the inner man. If we save our old way of life, we cannot receive the new life through faith and obedience to Jesus. We must die to the old way, the old man of sin and live in the new man, after the Holy Spirit of God.

Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

As dead to sin and living unto Christ Jesus.

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

1 Sam 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
1 Sam 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee ...

A sacrifice is no good unless we obey God. He cares not for dead rituals, for he searches your hearts. We need no glory of the flesh in being living martyrs; but the glory is of God by obedience and service to Him. Jesus paid it all, we are as he is in this world and shall be with him for all eternity, by faith and obedience. We bear our cross willingly, for we are yoked with Jesus, His grace is with us and He takes our burdens to His cross. Give all to Jesus.

1 Pet 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Ashamed?

Luke 9:25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

Solomon was a wise man in his time. He wrote the book of Ecclesiastes, which was a view of the world from his perspective; the richest of men with everything he desired from this life. These are his words:

Eccl 1:2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. (empty)
Eccl 1:3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
Eccl 1:14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Life is empty if it is about ourselves, but when we are in Christ Jesus, life is beautiful and full of meaning. I love his word. Solomon's father was King David, a man after God's own heart. He spoke the Psalms.

Psa 56:10 In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word.
Psa 56:11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
Psa 56:12 Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.
Psa 56:13 For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?
Paul wrote of our life being as a race and that we must run the race lawfully, lest we be a castaway, disqualified.

1 Cor 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

As David, we must encourage ourselves in the Lord, stay in his word and prayer. There are other voices and spirits who seek to destroy the work of Jesus in our lives. We must not be swayed by the ill winds that blow, but press on, for we are of a higher calling.

Phil 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
Phil 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Phil 3:15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

Luke 9:26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

It is OK if others seek to shame me, for I am in Christ. Those who hate him will hate us. We keep on loving our Lord, warning the lost when possible, but keeping ourselves from their evil ways. We are a holy people, sanctified and set apart for His fellowship. We are the light of Christ in a sin darkened world. One man said to me, there are more of us (God haters) than yours. So be it, it is their choice. I will glorify the Lord, for I am not ashamed, I am greatly honored to be with my Lord Jesus Christ, He is why I live. No one will pass by my grave waving a stick wondering where I will be. I know where I am going and you know, we are not ashamed to be with Jesus.

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Hear Jesus

Luke 9:32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

They seemed to sleep when they should be watching. This was for their benefit too. How many of us mean well, but fall asleep reading the Bible and praying? Get sleep, but not in place of these important things. Make room for the things that build your faith.

When they were awake, they saw his glory and the two men. We should see the glory that is Jesus, he is above all men. He is God the Son.

Luke 9:33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

As they departed, Moses and Elijah, Peter realizes who the two men were. He wanted them to stay, so he blurts out; let me make three dwellings from branches, as when we celebrate the feast of tabernacles. Let's have a religious celebration.

Luke 9:34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

As Peter spoke a cloud of glory overshadows them and covers them. They are covered with the presence of God, as the cloud that covered Moses on Mt. Sinai.

Exo 24:16 And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud.
Exo 24:17 And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.
Exo 24:18 And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.
Exo 25:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses...

The very presence of God was in the cloud and spoke out as Peter was still speaking. Are we like Peter, talking from our many thoughts when we should be still, in the presence of God? We need to listen as Peter, to hear from God.

Luke 9:35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

Hear my Son. You have heard Moses and the law. You have heard my prophets. Now someone greater is come. This is my Son: hear him.

1 Cor 15:27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
1 Cor 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

Luke 9:36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

Jesus stood alone. He stands alone among men in authority, power, truth and grace. Listen to Jesus, he is the way to the Father.

Power of faith

Luke 9:37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.

On the next day, when they came down from Mt. Zion. On Mt. Sinai Moses received the law; on Mt. Zion, Jesus would finish the work of grace. Many people waited to see him, some with urgent needs.

Luke 9:38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
Luke 9:39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
Luke 9:40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

Mat 17:19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

Power and authority had been given to all the apostles.

Mat 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Mat 17:21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

Faith is required to do the work of God, unbelief must be removed. Prayer and fasting accomplishes the things of God.

Luke 9:41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

Jesus knew the hearts of the people, faithless and perverse. This is the opposite of faith; prayer and fasting to seek God's will and power. He grew weary of their unbelief, yet he answered the request for the possessed boy.

Luke 9:42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

Phil 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

If we have no power, satan will not go. Jesus has the power and authority of God. Power was given to all who trust in Jesus as Lord. This was not for Peter alone.

Mat 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Faith and prayer are required. Fasting puts the flesh under the authority of the Spirit. It is of the Spirit that we do the work of God.

Afraid to ask

Luke 9:43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

They were amazed that at his command the devil left the child and was healed. They were amazed when he fed the 5000. They were amazed when he said, peace be still and the wind and waves were stilled. Jesus is amazing and he was doing the will of his Father in heaven.

Luke 9:44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
Luke 9:45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

Several times he would tell them this message.

Luke 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

They could not understand, the meaning was hid from them. One reason they did not understand is that they were afraid to ask him questions. Questions for understanding are good. Never be afraid to ask questions concerning the things of God.

Some who are of the devil ask questions to sow strife and confusion.

James 3:14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
James 3:15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
James 3:16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
James 3:18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

We must be careful who we listen to. If we ask questions of a devil possessed person, he will lead you astray. Jesus speaks the truth.

Jesus was no devil, he is God the Son. Why is it that they were not able to understand him? Is the devil hindering the hearing?

John 12:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
John 12:39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
John 12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

Perhaps they just could not understand, because they did not have God's Spirit for discernment?

1 Cor 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

All this to say this:

If you have a question, seek the word of God or someone who you trust to help you, who knows the word. Do not listen to those who sow discord, for they will lead you into confusion. God is not a God of confusion.

2 Tim 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Don't be afraid to ask questions concerning the things of God. This is how we learn.

Who is greatest?

Luke 9:46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

Isn't this the thinking of the world? If I can only rise to the top of my profession, to be respected of all. If only I had more money, more possessions, then I would command respect? If only I was more thin or fat, then I would look better and people would notice me? Perhaps I would be loved? What things in your mind hold you captive? What are you wishing to achieve to make you more loved and respected by people? Hear God, and put away these things.

1 Cor 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
1 Cor 3:20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

Luke 9:47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
Luke 9:48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

Jesus showed them a child and said how you treat this innocent one in Jesus name, how you love him and are gentle, caring and kind and receive him, it is as receiving Jesus. Jesus is with the innocent and the weak, the trusting children.

This can make us consider some things. How many leave their children in someone elses care while they work to achieve wealth and things? Are you ignoring Jesus, are you leaving Jesus behind? Jesus is saying, do not seek prominence, but seek me. Do good, love your children and your family. Relationships are more important then being first in the world.

Mat 19:13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
Mat 19:14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 19:15 And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence. Not only is the Lord in little children, but he is in those who are most needy in the world. Do we see how we could neglect the needs of others when we seek personal wealth and prominence? What is our hearts fervent desire?

Mat 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Mat 25:35 For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
Mat 25:36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
Mat 25:37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
Mat 25:38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
Mat 25:39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
Mat 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

I think we see the heart of God better now.

Who is for us?

Luke 9:49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
Luke 9:50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

This is an exception, to other scriptures on the subject. God always shows us something new. Who can know the mind of God? A scripture that supports this verse is:

Mat 12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
Mat 12:26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?

But there are other scriptures that do not agree with this.

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

What is different in this passage? Many claimed to prophesy, cast out devils in Jesus name and to do wonderful works, BUT, Jesus knew their hearts. They were phonies, not truly of God, but pretenders. Jesus examined their works, they did not do the will of the Father. They were doing things on their own, claiming to hear from the Father, claiming to do great things from the Father, it was all smoke, worthless. Why? Jesus said, "I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Religious things and games, from their own wicked hearts. They had not bothered to come to Jesus and to hear from the Father. They were lying, children of the devil, perhaps self deceived.

Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Jer 17:10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Our Holy Spirit discernment is needed. The real Holy Spirit, from receiving Jesus as Lord and savior; not eyes glazed, emotional pretense. You may fool the people, but not the Lord.

2 Pet 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 Pet 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
2 Pet 2:3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

Are you fooled by those who wish to make merchandise of you for their own gain? Truly be careful. If they prophesy, is it of God, from his word? Are they really casting out devils and doing wonders? I wonder? Examine all their fruit, not just what they claim. Do they have the fruit of the Spirit?

Getting back to our scriptures from Luke. They may not be with us, maybe in another denomination, but doing the Lord's work. If they are for Jesus, praise God and offer them your fellowship. If they are of another spirit, rebuke them in love and withdraw from them.

Don't let Jesus pass you by

Luke 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

It was nearing the time of the final Passover, Jesus was doing things that needed to be done before he would go to the cross for our sins and to be received up to heaven with the Father. He fixed his face towards Jerusalem. Be assured this weighed heavy on his human mind. Important and difficult things do cause us to ponder and be prepared in our minds and hearts.

Luke 9:52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

The Jews hated the Samaritans and normally would go around their land. Jesus had no hate, he would cut through Samaria as he did when he met the woman at the well.

John 4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria.

Every place Jesus went had opportunities for ministry, this is true for us as well. Remember the great commission:

Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, (as you go) and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Jesus sent messengers ahead to prepare the Samaritans to meet Jesus. They were sent bearing good news. The work of the apostles was to go as ambassadors to introduce Jesus to others.

Luke 9:53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

Interesting, his focus and attention seemed to be elsewhere, on the difficult time ahead, so he seemed to be not coming to them, but just passing through. Jesus was perfect, but we are not. If we expect people to want to hear us, we must be prepared and enthusiastic. Jesus could have blessed these people with eternal life, but they thought he was going to others. How many feel that they are unworthy to receive Jesus? How many cannot see that he loves them? That he came to die for them to secure eternal life for them? Do not think that Jesus did not come for you. Do not let him pass by without being touched by him.

Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

He came for me and he came for you, don't let him go by without making you whole. He is healer and life giver. In Jesus is eternal life and the forgiveness of all sins. He came to them and he comes to you, because he loves you with all of his heart. Reach out and receive him.

Perhaps another would come to those who were afraid to come to Jesus and show them the way to life? Maybe you will be the one another trusts and you will do the work of Jesus? Show forth his fruit, He will build his church. We are not sent to destroy but to give life to as many as would receive our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the way. We must get out of the way; and show Jesus to them.

Homeless

Luke 9:57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

A man comes to Jesus as he was traveling on the highway saying, Lord, master I will follow you wherever you go. Do we say this too? We sing where he leads I will follow. We like the blessings of the Lord and some believe by giving to certain evangelists that they will receive homes and cars and material success. There is another success that they should seek, the success of doing the will of God.

Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

Luke 9:58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

Jesus was not born a king in a palace, but to a humble family. He was laid in a manger. He came as a lowly servant.

Mat 12:18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles.
Mat 12:19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
Mat 12:20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
Mat 12:21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

Jesus gave his life a sacrifice for many.

Mat 20:27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
Mat 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Mat 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
Mat 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Jesus had no home, but he served the Father with all his heart, doing his will, blessing many. Do you still want to follow Jesus? If so? A mansion awaits you in heaven. If you are blessed with a home, use it for hospitality. If you are given wealth; use it for God's kingdom. All we own comes from the Father. Follow Jesus and use all for his glory.

Preach it

Luke 9:59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
Luke 9:60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

This man's father was not dead, but he wanted to stay with his father until he was dead. There is nothing wrong with caring for the father. Jesus earlier made a point of giving to the needs of the parents and seeing that they were cared for.

Mat 15:4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
Mat 15:5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
Mat 15:6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

They were giving offerings of the money that was to be used for the care of their parents. Another place Jesus says this:

Mat 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Mat 10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Mat 10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
Mat 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Mat 10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
Mat 10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

We are to care for the parents and our families, but to follow Jesus we must put his desires first. Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. There are brothers who can wait for your father to die. Perhaps like your father they are dead. They are not believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and are spiritually dead. Let the dead bury the dead. We are to put the service to Jesus as a priority. We are not to let excuses keep us from following him. Go thou and preach the gospel of the kingdom of God. Show your new life and start preaching. First preach to your father and family and then go to others. Jesus knew what it meant to serve His father, as he said to his earthly parents:

Luke 2:49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

We serve God by serving others, but they are not to control us. Jesus is Lord, we serve him; so we must preach the gospel. Jesus is Lord and master of our lives.

No looking back

Luke 9:61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

Perhaps the family of mother, father, brothers and sisters are not saved. Will they persuade you to stay away from following Jesus? Is your heart more with them? Maybe you had not so good parents, will you let them control you? Will you let your bad past keep you from following Jesus? Is it more important for you to seek their approval, then to follow Jesus through a new heart and Spirit?

Remember Lot and his wife who were told to flee their homes and not look back? His wife looked back, having love for the things of the city.

Gen 19:24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
Gen 19:25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
Gen 19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Luke 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Who will you obey? Who are you seeking to please? Are we going to stay the course or bail out when things do not go our way? Are you king of your life? Make up your mind, for there is no looking back, no turning back if you are going to follow Jesus.
