Matthew 21

Hosanna

Mat 21:1 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,
Mat 21:2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.
Mat 21:3 And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.
Mat 21:4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
Mat 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

Another prophecy fulfilled by Jesus

Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

This was his final entrance unto Jerusalem. He came lowly, or as a humble King. Before, he did not wish for a crowd, now he comes in open triumph, not yet to rule on the earth, but to give his life a ransom, to gather a people unto himself.

Mat 18:11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

Mat 21:6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,
Mat 21:7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.

This was the custom of royalty, to ride a colt. He was the King of Kings and the Prince of Peace.

Mat 21:8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strowed them in the way.
Mat 21:9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
Mat 21:10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?
Mat 21:11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

He was more than a prophet, he is Lord, King and High Priest. He is all in all; lift up your voice in praise, the deliverer has come; but many did not believe.

Luke 19:39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
Luke 19:40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
Luke 19:41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
Luke 19:42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

Life is filled with triumph and sorrows, until Jesus returns again. Yet do you know the peace that we have now in Jesus?

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Temple of God

Mat 21:12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
Mat 21:13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

The gospel of John reports an earlier visit to the temple, three years before this, with similar results.

John 2:13 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,
John 2:14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
John 2:15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
John 2:16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.
John 2:17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

Isaiahs prophecy fulfilled

Isa 56:7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

So similar are the stories, yet the people continued to do what they were doing. Making money, charging too much for the exchanging of foreign currency and making the House of the Lord a marketplace, selling the doves, the poor person's sacrifice for sins.

The dove is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. They were sacrificing their peace and their connection to God, by sinning openly, especially in the outer courts, that was the place that people entered. If we in the church keep people from entering because we openly are merchandising the things of God in public; they see greed instead of God. I think our Lord would not be pleased. Yes, Jesus was angry at those who defile God's temple. We, our bodies, are the temple of God. If another defiles us, Jesus is upset at them, but not with you. He loves you and your temple of God. His presence belongs there.

Healing

Mat 21:14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

Where the presence of Jesus is, there is healing. When we come together in unity, Jesus is there for healing.

Mat 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

All three, Father, Son and Holy Ghost are present through the Holy Spirit.
Praise and worship brings the presence of God, satan cannot dwell in praise. Many of our emotional hurts would disappear if we would praise God with a whole heart.

Psa 71:8 Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.
Psa 71:9 Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.

Healing can be done through people who have the gift of healing. Healing is by God, yet he can use us if he so desires, to lay hands on the sick for healing.

1 Cor 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

Mat 21:15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of David; they were sore displeased,

They were displeased because the scribes envied and hated Jesus. The children cried praises and the people shouted Hosanna to the King to come, the son of David. This was a fulfillment of prophecy.

Mat 21:16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

Psa 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

Mat 21:17 And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.

Bethany was at the home of his friends, Mary, Martha and Lazarus; whom he had raised from the dead. It is good to have trusted friends to come to relax with. The people that followed him were fickle, one moment shouting Hosanna, and later perhaps the same people were lifting there voices saying, crucify him, crucify him. The mission of Jesus was to heal and save the lost. No one would be healed of their sins unless he completed his journey to the cross.

Kingdom Power

Mat 21:18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.
Mat 21:19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.
Mat 21:20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!

Jesus spoke condemnation to a tree and it withered. Fig trees usually have fruit before they are leafed out. Jesus didn't come to save unfruitful trees, but the unfruitful in spirit, the spiritually lost people. He wants us to bear good fruit, eternal fruit. The fig tree was an example of the Pharisees who were proudly dressed, but who did not produce spiritual fruit.

Luke 6:43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Luke 6:44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Rom 6:20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
Rom 6:21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
Rom 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Mat 21:21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

Through Jesus, people with faith have dominion over nature and over the spirits. Not only did Jesus command the trees, he also commanded the seas and the wind. At his word disease was healed, by his rebuke satan's devil's fled in fear. The same spirit that Jesus has dwells in the blood bought children of God. The Spirit of Freedom still frees the captives and gives them new lives. There is power in the name of Jesus. The angel Gabriel spoke to a young Virgin Mary, of what was to come. She said how can this be? His reply:

Luke 1:37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Mat 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Some things? No, all things, that disciples gathered together in one heart ask in prayer, believing, you shall receive. Unity is so important. Where there is no agreement, forget about your prayers. We need to be with people of one heart, one Spirit, forgiving, restoring people that believe in God's promises. Then we shall have our prayers answered.

Answer with a Question

Mat 21:23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?

What authority did Jesus have to heal? God, his father is that authority. Jesus himself had authority and he gave it to his disciples.

Luke 9:1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

But, the chief priests really were not interested in his answers. They only wanted to cause him to sin or show himself in a bad way. Questions are good, if someone is sincerely seeking answers. Many who are from a bad spirit ask question upon question. But, their eyes are closed, their ears are closed and their hearts have evil intent. They seek to trip the witness for Jesus, to cause him to stumble.

Mat 21:24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.

Jesus, was not fooled, he asks them a question to throw them off guard. Now it was their turn to be shown for what they were.

Mat 21:25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?
Mat 21:26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.

They were not interested in truth, but their own pride and honor. They wanted the peoples admiration and they wanted to kill Jesus They served the Spirit of death, not of life.

Mat 21:27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

Jesus beat them at their own game. Would he have told a humble person the truth? Yes, but he knew that these others were not looking for truth, but they were seeking to find fault with him. They wanted him dead. Jesus came to give life; even in his death we receive life. He is raised from the grave. No tricks no lies only a good and true, loving Savior, who has forgiven our sins.

Beloved servants

Mat 21:28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

Jesus speaking to the chief priests in the temple speaks to them in a parable. We who serve Jesus work in His vineyard. Which of the two son's are you most like?

Mat 21:29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.

At first he was not willing, but he was convicted, he repented and did what was asked of him.

Mat 21:30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.

This one was pretending to do God's will, but he did not obey. He was lying, a hypocrite.

Mat 21:31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
Mat 21:32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

Jesus showed them their own hearts through a parable. A repentant publican or tax collector is received of God the friend of Jesus. The gospel of Matthew was written by the Apostle, Matthew, a publican who repented and was as a child of God, serving his father. He was truly a son of his father God.

Mary Magdalene was the beloved daughter of God, his servant and friend to Jesus. She had been a harlot, but was changed into the righteousness of Christ through belief and obedience. Who did Jesus come to first upon rising from the tomb? He came to Mary, because her great love brought her near to him, so near that she was honored to receive the good news. Jesus is raised from the grave!

John 20:11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
John 20:12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
John 20:13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
John 20:14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
John 20:15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
John 20:16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

Vineyard

Mat 21:33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:

Parables are meant to draw attention and to help people to see on one level, before Jesus explains the spiritual meaning behind the story. The householder is God the Father, keeper of the house of Israel. The vineyard was the people in the land, hedged about with God's protection. The winepress was the joy and abundance given to His people; the tower was the temple of God for worship. The husbandmen were the Priests of God who were responsible to care for the people until God came for them.

Mat 21:34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.

The fruit were the portion of the blessings returned to the temple and the new people who were brought into the kingdom of God.

Mat 21:35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.

God sent the prophets to give God's word and receive obedience from the people and they were treated poorly.

Mat 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
Mat 23:30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
Mat 23:31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

Mat 21:36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.
Mat 21:37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.

God sent his son, Jesus.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Mat 21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
Mat 21:39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
Mat 21:40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
Mat 21:41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
Mat 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

Acts 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Acts 4:11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Mat 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

John 10:16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

The Messiah came first to Israel, was rejected by them; the church age of grace began. The non Jews were also invited into God's kingdom.

Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
Eph 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
Eph 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

The rejection of the Jewish Messiah brought forth the message of forgiveness through Jesus Christ to all people. The entire world would hear the gospel and many would be saved.

Mat 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Through rejection by the nation of Israel, the message of hope was given to the entire world to hear and receive. God turned rejection into blessings. He makes all things good, in his way and in his time. Keep trusting the God of grace.

The Stone

Mat 21:44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

This is a powerful warning.

The LORD spoke through his prophet Isaiah:

Isa 8:13 Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
Isa 8:14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Isa 8:15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
Isa 8:16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
Isa 8:17 And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.

We need to know Jesus as our hope and salvation. Those who come to him with broken hearts, he will heal.

Psa 34:18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Psa 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
Psa 34:20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

But, those who oppose Jesus shall be broken, ground to powder by the judgment of God.

Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
Rev 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
Rev 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
Rev 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
Rev 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Rev 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Mat 21:45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.
Mat 21:46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.

The religious leaders saw themselves as Jesus saw them. Instead of being broken in their hearts and seeking forgiveness, they wished to kill him. But first, they must control the minds of the people. If evil controls the minds, then satan has his way. Who will we listen too? We follow the goodness of Jesus drawing close to him. I know this is what we will choose.

Eph 5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
Eph 5:7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
Eph 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Eph 5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Eph 5:10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Eph 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
Eph 5:12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
Eph 5:13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
Eph 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
Eph 5:15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
Eph 5:16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Eph 5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
