Matthew 22

The Wedding

Mat 22:1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
Mat 22:2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,

God the Father prepares a banquet for the marriage of His Son Jesus. The marriage is a people who are of the seem heart as the Son. This would be called the church.

Mat 22:3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.

Mat 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

Mat 22:4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
Mat 22:5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

Most of the Hebrew people were too caught up in the things of life, to respond to the free invitation.

Mat 22:6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.

The remnant here, refers to the rest of the people. Those who listened, but rejected the message in a violent way, even killing the LORD's messengers.

Mat 22:7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.

Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
Mat 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

Mat 22:8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.

Why were they not worthy? Had not God sent for them, and they knew he was coming? Had not He arranged many blessings for them? Had not He had great plans of oneness for them with His Son, Jesus? Why were they unworthy? Because they ignored the free gift of God, they were self seeking and they had no faith. Their every blessing came from God, yet they treated him as nothing, not wishing to please him. They went about their lives as if he did not exist and some even resisted him, even destroying his messengers. These were instruments of the devil.

Mat 22:9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.

God will have a bride for his son; one worthy of His love, a bride of one heart and one spirit. His bride is the church that are of many peoples, trusting in the Bridegroom, the provider of life and all blessings of God. We are the church, the bride of Christ we are his chosen people.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Garment of Grace

Mat 22:10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

The servants, the witnesses of God gather many people for the wedding. The wedding is when Jesus comes for his church. Not all who claim to be Christians have truly received Jesus. One well known evangelist estimated that as many as seventy-percent of those who claim to be Christians, are not saved by Jesus through faith.

Mat 22:11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
Mat 22:12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

What will they say to Jesus when he asks them if they are wearing his righteousness through his shed blood?

Mat 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The way was known, the garment of grace, the righteousness of Christ was not chosen. What reasons do people have for not receiving Jesus? There are many, it is unbelief, and the result is separation from God. Let us not turn from the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. We can't make it by our own righteousness.

Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Isa 64:7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.
Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.
Isa 64:9 Be not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Mat 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

Is Jesus calling you through his Spirit? Only those who trust in Jesus for forgiveness of sins are chosen.

Unto Caesar, unto God

Mat 22:15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

Many who oppose Jesus, even in the Internet chats, use this spirit of entanglement. These were full of guile, plotting to trip up Jesus with difficult questions. Jesus has the answer to all questions and being God the Son, his answers are often unexpected and full of wisdom and grace.

Mat 22:16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.

The Pharisees sent their disciples to do their trickery, with the Herodians, those who were supporters of King Herod, who was the Roman governor representing Caesar.

Mat 22:17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

Should we pay taxes to Caesar, the occupying government? They paid up to twenty percent to the temple, as well as what Caesar required. Those who asked the questions were from the Jews who supported the temple and the Herodians. Almost any answer would bring offense to one or the other. Satan does this; he tries to trip us up, so someone will be offended.

Mat 22:18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

You pretenders, you actors playing a pretend role, why tempt me? Satan was using these men to cause Jesus to stumble. Jesus warned satan earlier about tempting God. Yes indeed, Jesus is God the Son.

Mat 4:6 And (satan) saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Mat 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Mat 22:19 Show me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
Mat 22:20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
Mat 22:21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

Jesus spoke with such wisdom and clarity.

Mat 22:22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

The apostle Paul, further explains the paying of tribute and the duties of government.

Rom 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
Rom 13:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
Rom 13:5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. Rom 13:6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
Rom 13:7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
Rom 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

Help us to keep the Royal law of loving, Lord God. This is our duty to God.

Rom 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

The Great Commandment

Mat 22:33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
Mat 22:34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

As birds of a feather flock together, so do those with like hearts. The spirit is of God, or against God. One bad apple can spoil a barrel of apples. One perverse spirit can soon upset many, if we do not discern, rebuke it with God's word and separate from it. The Pharisees plotted together to discredit our Lord Jesus.

Mat 22:35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
Mat 22:36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

I suppose the question was not meant to be answered, but to start a debate. His answer, we all should remember and follow each moment of each day.

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

What part of our lives should love God? All that we are shall love the LORD our God. How it must grieve our Father when he is not allowed in public places, in hearts and even in many churches that name his name. Love and forgiveness of one another go together.

Mat 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Mat 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Mat 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.
Mat 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Mat 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Anyone that you can show God's love to is your neighbour. Who were Jesus' neighbours? The ones he gave his life for. Those that rejected him chose not to receive his love; they are still lost in their sins.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Love is not in itself, it is not just an emotion, but there is a message in God's love. We need God we need His love; we need the forgiveness and life that comes through his son. Jesus is the love of God with the message of salvation.

Whose son is He?

Mat 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
Mat 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David.

Jesus often referred to himself as the son of man. He identified himself to the Jews, as the son of David. He was the fulfillment of the prophecies concerning a king to come who would deliver his people.

What did the Pharisees think about Jesus? Not good. First Jesus speaks; listen to Jesus speaking with them.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
John 8:45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
John 8:46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
John 8:47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
John 8:48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?

With these words, they were without truth and understanding of Jesus.

A Samaritan woman found the Messiah

John 4:25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
John 4:26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

Isaiah spoke of Jesus as the Redeemer.

Isa 59:20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.
Isa 59:21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.

Mat 22:43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
Mat 22:44 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
Mat 22:45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

Psa 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Mat 22:46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Psa 45:6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.

John 1:32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
John 1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
John 1:34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

Jesus is the son of man and the Son of God.
