Matthew 27

Pontius Pilate

Mat 27:1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

This was what they had plotted to do from the beginning. They broke many laws in their attempt to entrap and kill Jesus. Yet, true to their father (Satan) they accuse Jesus of breaking laws. They were of the letter, the letter of the law kills, the spirit of the law Jesus kept. Jesus was often accused, as he did the Father's work

John 5:15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
John 5:16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

Mat 12:12 ... Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

Mat 12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

John 5:17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
John 5:18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

This is not about concern for the law. It is about men threatened by God's anointed servant. It is about men seeking to keep power, by putting others in bondage.

Mat 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

Mat 10:26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.
Mat 10:27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.
Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

John 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

As follow Jesus we do the works of Jesus through the Holy Spirit. we follow

Mat 27:2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

The Jews under Roman law, could not condemn a man to death for only breaking the Jewish law; only Roman power could execute, and by Roman law they had to make a case before Pontius Pilate that would be powerful enough to have Jesus executed. Breaking the Sabbath? Saying he was the Son of God? Rome did not care about these accusations. The Jewish leaders would scheme and find a way to get their Messiah crucified. Jesus was Jewish and the Son of God. He was to be followed, but they desired to kill him. So, phony religious leaders moved Jesus to the Roman governor, a man like themselves, seeking only power and his own interests. Only Rome had power to execute wrong doers.

Who would care for you and me? Are we lost in the worlds system of justice, without hope? Jesus went willingly, for his plan was for our interests, the salvation of the humble, the freeing of those who were bound. He would willingly shed his blood to buy our freedom. He was not selfish, seeking his own power. He died for you and me. God cares...

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

We have an advocate, Jesus, Lord and savior. He will provide for us when we follow him in faith.

Judas dies

Mat 27:3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

Judas, had a change of heart, he repented thinking that the money really was not so important compared to the life of Jesus. He returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. Now, under grace, we are told to repent, come to Jesus and we will be forgiven. Where was forgiveness for Judas? Only through faith in the Messiah. The law required that a sacrifice be made for sins. Judas sought repentance and to reverse the wrong doing.

Mat 27:4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.

In my eyes, the greater sin was on the keepers of the law. Not only did they plot to kill Jesus, but in typical fashion, they kept Judas from salvation. They showed no mercy, no grace.

Mat 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

Is this not the greater sin? How many people have sought repentance and forgiveness in the wrong place, only to leave empty and discouraged? How many of us would be alive today if someone had not pointed us to the way of salvation, through faith in Jesus Christ? How much is the work of the Holy Spirit and how much is the work of the true witness? Both are needed, if not, Jesus would not have commanded his disciples to go out into the world.

Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Mat 27:5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

In despair, finding no forgiveness, Judas went out and hanged himself. Afterwards his body fell to the ground (Acts 1:18).

Mat 27:6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.

The ultimate in religious hypocrisy, still pretending to be keepers of the law, the murderers of Jesus and Judas use the silver that they used to pay Judas, to buy a plot of land for the undesirables.

Mat 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
Mat 23:24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
Mat 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

Mat 27:7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
Mat 27:8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.
Mat 27:9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;

This was quoted, by Zechariah. I sometimes misquote the source of a Bible verse, but I know by the Spirit that it is in the Bible. This may have been an error by a scribe, yet the spirit is true. The words were prophetic words.

Zec 11:12 And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.
Zec 11:13 And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.

Jeremiah said:

Jer 6:30 Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the LORD hath rejected them.

Mat 27:10 And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.

We give Glory to God for our blessed savior; the Lord Jesus Christ.

Accused as King

Mat 27:11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.

The chief priests and elders have found a charge against their Messiah that may convict him in a Roman court. He called himself King of the Jews; therefore he is a threat to king Herod and the powers to be. When Jesus was asked if he was the King of the Jews, he did not deny it, but agreed with Herod.

Mat 27:12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
Mat 27:13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
Mat 27:14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

The gospel of Luke gives us a broader picture:

Luke 23:2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

More lies with a little truth. This is satans way of accusing.

Luke 23:3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.
Luke 23:4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
Luke 23:5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
Luke 23:6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.
Luke 23:7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
Luke 23:8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

Herod at first was delighted, hoping to be entertained by a miracle, but soon evil joins evil opposing the anointed Christ.

Luke 23:9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
Luke 23:10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.
Luke 23:11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.
Luke 23:12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

Both Pilate and Herod were men of worldly wealth and power. Their kind usually are enemies of God, for they trust in their own things. No matter how different they may be, they became one evil spirit in opposition to the Holy one of God. If others come against you as God's servant? They did it to your Lord first. Do not lose heart; it will bring you heavenly rewards if you remain true to the Lord. One last note; Satan torments and tempts the flesh to try to get us to focus on the old flesh nature and the past. Jesus was without sin and yet he was still accused. We shall be accused too. Resist the accusations by casting them down. You are a child of the King.

2 Cor 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

We stay strong when we use the shield of faith, believing in God's promises and by walking in his anointed spirit of truth.

Destroying the truth

John 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
John 10:30 I and my Father are one.

Mat 27:15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.

John 18:38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
John 18:39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

Mat 27:16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
Mat 27:17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?

John 18:40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

Mat 27:18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

Pilate knew that Jesus had done no wrong. He correctly saw that they had delivered him for envy. This is just one of the many evils of the old nature, the natural man, Pilate was no better.

Rom 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Rom 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
Rom 1:31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
Rom 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
Rom 2:1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

Mat 27:19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

A wife is a helpmeet

Gen 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Gen 2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
Gen 2:22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
Gen 2:23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

The wife of Pilate seeks to be of help to him, warning him to have nothing to do with Jesus. She had been warned in a dream, whereas Pilate saw with his eyes the envy of the Jewish leaders. A godly Christian wife is the best helpmeet for a Christian man. Through the wife comes wisdom and advice, by her hands come help and loving words. A Christian wife is a beautiful helpmeet for her husband. If we marry an unsaved person, the spirit of disobedience and rebellion hinders the God given help meet role. Job had an ungodly wife when she advised him to curse God and die, yet he himself remained faithful to God and his wife.

Pilate has been given enough advice to do the right thing. Will he seek God's direction or heed the people’s cries? At heart he seeks political power, he would follow the people for personal power and gain. His soul is in danger of eternal damnation. There is only one way of truth. Will he seek to destroy truth for personal gain? Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. To destroy these hopes would be a foolish choice for any man or woman.

Light and darkness

Mat 27:20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

Again, as with Judas, the religious leaders are behind the destruction of our Lord. The greater condemnation belongs with them, yet every person has free will. They were all without excuse.

Mat 15:14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

The Lord did not argue with them, to change their minds earlier, nor at this time. It was all to bring about the final sacrifice for our sins. The Religious leaders knew the truth, but their evil hearts wished power and to walk in darkness.

John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
John 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Mat 27:21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
Mat 27:22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
Mat 27:23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
Mat 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

Pilate washed his hands, an outward show of righteousness, but inwardly, his heart was evil, for he consented unto Jesus' death. The Pharisees washed their hands before eating, and earlier when Jesus and his disciples did not wash their hands, they used this as an opportunity to accuse him. What did Jesus say in response to the Pharisees?

Mat 15:3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

Mat 15:10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
Mat 15:11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

Foolish, foolish people who oppose the Lord, their salvation, and follow the darkness. We are accountable for our words, even more for our deeds. Our words bring grace or condemnation. Watch what you say, do not make oaths towards yourself or another. The following words of darkness had brought darkness upon a people, keeping them from receiving their Messiah. Generation after generation would teach the lie of their elders.

Mat 27:25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

By this oath, they brought darkness and blindness to many generations of Jewish people. To this day the traditions and error of men are taught to the Jewish people regarding the coming of their Messiah.

Rom 11:25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

This is the time of the Gentiles, the time of grace to hear and receive the Messiah. Still, a remnant of the Jewish people shall believe and receive the Messiah. God still will reveal himself to some. Praise God for this, for Jesus is for all men and women of faith. For those who come to the light, they shall become the children of God. Jesus is the light of man, Jesus came to die for all people with a heart of love and with the two edged sword of truth. Never did he lie, but spoke the truth boldly. He was willing to pay the price so that you and I may be forgiven, no matter how great the sin; his forgiveness is there for you. Come and receive the Light of truth. May the blood of Jesus be upon you by faith and not by guilt by refusing him. Not guilty? Or guilty? It is your choice.

Mocked

Mat 27:26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Barrabas, means "son of the father;" he was a son of sinful Adam. Jesus is the Son of the Father God and the son of man who is named our “savior.”

Phil 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Phil 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Jesus was whipped, his back striped with the whippings; His blood flowed for our healing.

Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Mat 27:27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
Mat 27:28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
Mat 27:29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
Mat 27:30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
Mat 27:31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

Isa 45:22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
Isa 45:23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

Phil 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Phil 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The world still mocks the King of the Jews, the King of Kings, my Lord and my savior.

Sufferings of Christ

Mat 27:32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.

Jesus, had been beaten to the point of near death, he was cut with thorns on his head, beaten with fists, his beard pulled out.

ISA 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

Isa 53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Isa 53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

He was humiliated, spit upon and mocked. This he did for us. Here he was bearing his cross, thought to be the upper beam that weighed as much as an average sized woman. As he would go to the death of the flesh, He also tells us to put our old flesh man and his will to death daily and follow Jesus in newness of life in the spirit man.

Mat 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Mat 16:25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
Mat 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Our bodies are to be sanctified, set aside for good works in His service, through God's grace and love.

Mark 15:21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.

Simon of Cyrene, a Jew who traveled 800 miles to the temple from a village in North Africa, was thought to be a black man. He was compelled by the Roman soldiers to carry the cross of Jesus. There was a possible mention of his two sons’ in the early church.

Acts 13:1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. Mat 27:33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,

The mountain had a profile of a skull, in the rock formations.

Mat 27:34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

This drink was to be as a form of mind numbing drug, Jesus refused, going to his death with his mind clear. The overuse of medications, to avoid minor pains does not seem to be the way Jesus chose. His pain was excruciating. The word excruciate, is from the word, of the cross. Anyone who has suffered can be assured that our Lord has also suffered great pain and agony.

Mat 27:35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

A prophecy fulfilled, as Jesus hung unclothed, flesh torn and nailed in agony to the cross.

Mat 27:36 And sitting down they watched him there;
Mat 27:37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Luke 23:38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

The crucifixion place was by a major road used by traders from many countries. Whoever would look at the sign, would understand the meaning.

John 19:21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
John 19:22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

A sign mocking both Jesus and the Jews. He was cursed at, yet died for our sins and curses.

Gal 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

I do not wish to go into great detail about the sufferings of our Lord. Some of you have suffered greatly from evil people, or from affliction. We do not look at sufferings, for it is flesh. But, from suffering came something of value to Jesus as our example. He learned obedience by suffering in the will of his father.

Heb 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
Heb 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

So, when we follow the Lord in obedience and still suffer because of this. We are partaking with Jesus in His sufferings. The flesh is not the focus, but the will of our Father.

Phil 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
Phil 3:11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
Phil 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
Phil 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
Phil 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

The Lord Bless you with all spiritual blessings and may you prosper as your soul prospers. Amen

Two thieves

Mat 27:38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
Mat 27:39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
Mat 27:40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

He would do better than come down from the cross; on the third day he arose from the grave, but they still would not believe. A hardened heart will not receive truth.

Mat 27:41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
Mat 27:42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
Mat 27:43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
Mat 27:44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

The thieves were even reviling him, but later one had a change of heart.

Luke 23:39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
Luke 23:40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
Luke 23:41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
Luke 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Compare these events to the prophecy of Psalm 22.

Psa 22:11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
Psa 22:12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
Psa 22:13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
Psa 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
Psa 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
Psa 22:16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
Psa 22:17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
Psa 22:18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
Psa 22:19 But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
Psa 22:20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
Psa 22:21 Save me from the lion's mouth:...

The thief was saved by coming to Jesus, even on the cross. Salvation came to the one with a changed heart. It will become popular to sin openly and revile God and his servants, yet as Jesus did, we must be ready to lead the one with a change of heart to the grace that comes only through trusting in Jesus.

1 Pet 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
1 Pet 3:16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
1 Pet 3:17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
1 Pet 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

It is finished

Mat 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

The sixth hour after sunrise, about noon, the sun was darkened.

Mat 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

It is understood by many, that the abiding fellowship of God the father was broken, as Jesus took upon himself the sins of all the world. He was the propitiation for our sins. He was the sacrifice, once for all time. For a brief moment, the Father could not look upon the sins of us all. But, through His obedience, he made it possible to be reconciled to the Father, through faith in Christ Jesus.

Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Col 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
Col 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
Col 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
Col 1:22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

Mat 27:47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.

Jesus was speaking in Arabic.

Mat 27:48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

He refused the numbing drink.

Mat 27:49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
Mat 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

What did Jesus cry unto the Lord? Two things: Father forgive them, for they know not what they do and it is finished.

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Even from the cross, Jesus forgave and offered forgiveness. The blood shed on the cross, was the blood shed for all tine, to atone for our sins. The work of redemption is finished. Jesus paid it all, we must only repent of our sins and come to him by faith. As the bitterness of men touched the mouth of the man with no bitterness, he spoke his last words:

John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

The sacrifice for our sins was finished; Jesus would rise in glory, in our behalf. The Greek word for this was - tetelestai, which means, "paid in full." Jesus had paid in full the price to redeem us from our sins.

Heb 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
Heb 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

It is finished, the final atonement for all time. He was accepted by His Father. As all who will receive Jesus will be accepted to the Father. Praise God for his grace!

Signs following

Mat 27:51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

The veil of the temple, separating the most holy place of the temple was woven material almost a foot thick, It was torn from the top down. From heaven to earth No longer was the Holy place of God in the temple in Jerusalem. The holy place is within the heart of the believer. Access was now given to enter the very throne room of God.

Eph 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

Mat 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
Mat 27:53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

To prove that in Jesus is life, many saints were raised from the graves. This is a type of the rapture, when the dead, who had faith in the promises of God, would be risen.

1 Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1 Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Mat 27:54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

The centurion was convinced, are you convinced?

Our Passover Lamb

Mat 27:55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
Mat 27:56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.

Two Mary's followed, Mary Magdalene whom Jesus had cast out seven devils. (Mark 16:9) and Mary, the mother of James and Joses. James was also the brother of John, are they the same person?

Mat 27:57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
Mat 27:58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

The Jews did not want a corpse hanging on the cross during their holy days of Passover. Even though, they were celebrating in symbolism the very Passover Lamb, Jesus who they nailed to the cross. How often do people seek the shadows and run from the light of truth?

1 Cor 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
1 Cor 5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Mat 27:59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

Alongside of Joseph came another friend, a Pharisee named Nicodemus, who was told by Jesus "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." ( John 3:3)

John 19:39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
John 19:40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

Mat 27:60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

Another prophecy fulfilled.

Isa 53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

Mat 27:61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

They continued to love their master, death could not separate them.

No question that Mary Magdalene was there. The Lord had cast out seven devil's from her. Mark 16:9 ... Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. She loved the Lord very much and was the first the Lord Jesus spoke to after the resurrection.

Who was the other Mary? The mother of James and Joses? We know that Mary, the mother of Jesus had two more son's by Joseph, named James and Joses.

Mat 13:55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

John spoke of a Mary, who was the wife of Cleophas.

John 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

There was a third woman, the mother of Zebedee's children. Her name was Salome, but not the Salome that danced for the head of John the Baptist.

The Mary's are many, but one stood out at the end. Mary Magdalene, she was forgiven much and loved much.

Mat 27:57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:

Sealed Tomb

Mat 27:62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
Mat 27:63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

They gave respect to Pilate, after destroying their Messiah from God, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Like spirits, unite, no matter how different they are in office. They remembered Jesus' promise to rise on the third day, better then the disciples remembered. The devil's people hear the word of God, but actively fight against it. For the word has already spoken their destruction. They desperately want to keep Jesus in the grave and his servants hiding in fear.

Mat 27:64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

No one would believe them, if they had stolen the body. What was the real concern? They feared that Jesus would indeed arise from the dead, if so, no man could break through a sealed and guarded stone sealing the tomb. No man could, but how about the power of God?

Mat 27:65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
Mat 27:66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

The tomb was secured in three ways:

First, the stone was in a channel, it could only be rolled across the entrance. No man could push it open from the inside.

Secondly, a Roman seal was placed over the rock, a rope with the seal and authority of Rome, preventing it from being moved, by the authority of the power of Rome.

Thirdly, A Roman guard of at least four armed soldiers. They had armor, swords and spears. No one could approach the tomb without passing through the guard. If the seal was broken and the body taken, it was the custom that the guards would be killed. They would guard the tomb with their life's at stake.

The power of man was to face the power of God. Jesus would arise from the tomb on the third day, according to the scriptures. God's word cannot be broken. Their is no power on earth that could keep Jesus in the grave. He would rise again into eternal life!
