Revelation 22

River of Life

Rev 22:1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

Water is life to living things.

Psa 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

The water that Jesus gives is of the Holy Spirit. What kind of water is in our spiritual dwelling place? Is the pure water actual water? Or is it the outflowing of God's Holy Spirit? Will we need water in heaven? The water proceeds from the throne of God and the Lamb.

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

The Spirit will abide with the saints forever; living water that will not be shut off. The word of God is also as water.

Rev 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Rev 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Rev 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

There is a river flowing down a street, One tree on either side of the river. The river must flow through the tree of life. This is the tree as in the Garden of Eden.

Gen 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Gen 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Gen 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

The tree had twelve fruits, one for each month. It was designed for earth in the garden.

Prov 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

The fruit of righteousness, a continual supply. The leaves were for the healing of the nations. Leaves hang on a tree. Jesus hung on a tree to bring healing to the nations. There would be no need for healing if their had been no sin. Adam was created perfect and would have lived forever, had he not sinned.

Is it real water or spiritual? Perhaps both, we shall see it someday.

John 3:12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
James 1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
James 1:7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

We see with spiritual eyes the things of God.

Our responsibilities in Heaven

Rev 22:3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

Heaven shall have none of the curses given to Adam to live with. No pain or sorrows. No hard labor and no cursed ground. We shall be in the presence of God the Father and the Son, serving him. The throne is of both the Father and the Lamb; one throne. We glorify God through His Son. We worship and continue to serve him in heaven. It will be pure joy.

Rev 22:4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

1 Cor 13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
1 Cor 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
1 Cor 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

This will be the greatest glory of heaven: to know God, to know Jesus, more intimately and wonderfully than we ever could on earth. "It is the chief blessing of heaven, the cream of heaven, the heaven of heaven, that the saints shall there see Jesus." (Spurgeon)

Rev 7:3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

Sealed by the Holy Spirit. We belong to God, for we are of His Spirit and are identified as being His.

Rev 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

No more darkness in heaven, no sin, no suffering. God gives us his light and we will reign with him for ever. We reign because we are children of the king and receive the eternal inheritance with Jesus.

Col 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Col 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Col 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Col 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
Col 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

We were born into sin and separation from God. As born-again saints we are made the righteousness of Christ; holy and eternally reconciled for service and eternal life with the Father and the Son.

Keep the Sayings

Rev 22:6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to show unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.

These sayings, the prophecy of Revelation given to John, these things are faithful and true. For they came from the throne of God. These words are being declared by an angel, to show the things which must shortly be done.

Rev 22:7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.

Jesus is coming quickly, when he comes. All generations are to expect him, to anticipate the end and to be prepared. These words tell us of future events and warns us to be true to God's word and to keep our eyes upon Jesus. We shall be blessed if we take heed to these prophesies. Revelation is one book that many do not teach, and those who do, do not often agree. How then can we keep the sayings? There are warnings that all can see. Beware of the coming beast and follow Jesus each minute, for there will be a falling away. There will be hostility towards the church and towards Israel before he comes. This is already happening. Trust in the Lord and keep his sayings. Do not worship a man, Mary or a saint, nor an angel.

Rev 22:8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which showed me these things.

John again, being flesh, fell before the heavenly angel to worship him, but was told not to. An angel is a created servant of God, just as man is.

Rev 22:9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

Worship God and worship His Son, Jesus. Jesus is not an angel, nor is he just a man. He is God, the Living Word, made flesh.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Heb 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

Mat 14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
Mat 14:32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
Mat 14:33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

Jesus is worshipped with God the Father.

The time is at hand

Rev 22:10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.

Remember that Revelation began with a scroll with seven seals. It's contents had been hidden until now.

Rev 5:2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?
Rev 5:3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.
Rev 5:4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.
Rev 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

Jesus opened the book of Revelation for us; the things written in the book is for now, for the time is at hand for it's fulfillment. The book is to remain open. Jesus is coming soon and so is the beast. Do not be discouraged by what is occurring in the world, hold tight to the things you were taught about Jesus.

Heb 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
Heb 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Rev 22:11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

There may not be time to change, come to Jesus now for eternal life.

2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
2 Cor 6:1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
2 Cor 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

Rev 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Jesus comes soon, very soon.

Mat 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

He will reward his people who are expecting him with eternal life, crowns, and authority with him in the Millennium and in heaven.

Rev 22:13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Rev 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
Rev 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Jesus shares the title of the Father, I AM, Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. Those who trust in him shall have no end of life. There is more for us, friends. This life is only a testing place, to separate the wheat from the chaff.

The gate into the city

Rev 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

Those who love Jesus and are saved by his blood, through faith, do his commandments from a heart of love.

John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

They may have eternal life, entering in through the gate of the city. Jesus is the entrance to the city of God.

Mat 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Mat 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

John 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
John 10:2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
John 10:3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
John 10:4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
John 10:5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

We follow Jesus through the door, the Porter is the Holy Spirit who allows us to enter and exit following the Shepherd. Jesus must bring us through the gate and into the kingdom of heaven.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Rev 22:15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

A dog is anyone outside the covenant with God. We are in Christ, not outside. Sorcerers trust the power of satan and will perish with him in the lake of fire. Whoremongers sell people for sex and lust, including pornography, Beware lest you partake of their deeds. Murderers are killers, but this does not include instruments of protection. God ordained death to those who murder. War brings killing, to protect our country. People who kill in the name of God, are not of God. God will avenge. Idolaters, are those who worship things other than God. Included in the list our liars. Satan is the father of lies. We are to speak the truth, in love.

Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

This list includes the fearful and unbelieving, perhaps these are as the dogs. Afraid of what others might think, instead of fearing God. Fear of man, cowering in the dark, instead of the having fear of God and coming to the light.

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

Do not fear Jesus, He is God's light sent to forgive our sins. He is loving you and is the way through the gate of the Holy City.

Come, you that hear

Rev 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Jesus sent the angel to testify these things to the churches. Jesus is the root, the creator of David and also the offsprings in the flesh.

Isa 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
Isa 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

Mat 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
Mat 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David.
Mat 22:43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
Mat 22:44 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
Mat 22:45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
Mat 22:46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Rev 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

The Spirit is speaking in your heart, come. The bride, the church is inviting you to come to the living waters. Drink of the river of life, hear and respond to Jesus.

A final warning

Rev 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

That is a serious statement. Every commentator on Revelation, has a different view of the book, so are all cursed? I do not believe so. The original writing of Revelation is not changed.

James 3:1 My brethren, be not many masters (teachers), knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

We have incomplete understanding until Jesus comes. But we are to study to rightly divide the word of truth. Seek truth from comparing scripture with scripture and walking in his love and gentleness.

1 Cor 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
1 Cor 13:9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

2 Tim 2:15 Study (do dilgence) to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

False prophets and false teachers shall not enter the holy city. We must beware of false doctrines and traditions.

Mat 15:2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
Mat 15:3 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

Rev 22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

He that testifies from the word of Jesus, and God the Father speaks through His Son. Even so come for your people, Lord Jesus. We are not promised perfect health and healing and eternal life in this body. Jesus has given us eternal life in His Spirit. Our soul is made alive by Him. His Spirit gives life eternal and more abundant life here and now.

Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken (give life to) your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Rom 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
Rom 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Rev 22:21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

We need his grace for salvation and for this life to serve him. The New Covenant is a covenant of grace, through faith in Jesus Christ. We are on a journey to the promise land. We have a better understanding now, through the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Christ has overcome for us on the cross. The final result will be the removal of all sin and sinners and an eternal inheritance reserved for us in the Holy City. Is your name written in the book of life? This concludes our study of the Revelation.
