Review - American Psycho

Head Rush

I admit, I'm fairly reserved when it comes to movies. I'm such a sucker for sappy romances and lame comedies. There is one thing that gets me really worked up when I'm in a theater, though: incredibly violent psycho killer dark comedy thrillers!

Seriously! I went and saw Very Bad Things way back in November '98 and I loved it! Something about getting impaled on a towel hook thing, dude... anyway, when I saw the ads for American Psycho, I KNEW that this would be the movie for me. Looked to be very very very psychotic, and that's the way I like 'em.

Let me tell you, this movie didn't disappoint me. I was just rolling on the floor laughing through the whole thing. Yeah, I know, seeing people get murdered in the most bizarre of manners (dropping a chainsaw, anyone? how about a nail gun in the back of the head?) isn't supposed to be comedic. Or is it? The way I see it, it is. I have a twisted sense of humor, though. I guess maybe violent dark comedies are an aquired taste, or something really strange to most but completely marvellous to others. I think they're one of film's best kept little secrets- when I'm not wearing out my Clerks or There's Something About Mary VHSes, I'll pop in Very Bad Things and just laugh. I think American Psycho will earn that place in my collection, as well.

In fact, I think that American Psycho is even better executed (no pun intended) than Very Bad Things. VBT was wonderfully written, but didn't have the same quality as AP. VBT is about a group of guys who slowly go insane from their guilt; AP is about a guy who is already insane, but becomes even more insane throughout the course of the movie. And that's what I loved so much, I think- the ending. AP has the most brilliant ending one could ever imagine. And Christian Bale pulls it off brilliantly. Sometimes it seems a little forced, but mostly it's completely believable, at least in my opinion.

I might be insane (no, I know I'm insane), but I really get a rush from watching movies like Very Bad Things and American Psycho. They make me laugh and make me paranoid at the same time. And, for me, there ain't nothin' better than that!

Grade - A-
