Review - Girl, Interrupted

[Note: Only one person will get the title. Hi, sweetie. :o)]

Crazy people are always a fun bunch. That's why I like hanging out with my friends so much. Ah, but I kid. The real crazies are all locked up in mental institutions, far from the dangers of the world. Right?

But what if the ones in the institutions weren't really the ones who were crazy?

This story begins in the '60s, a time when most everyone was just a little insane. Susanna (Winona Ryder) has just gotten out of high school, and she already feels as though her life is a mess. One night she "has a headache," which she medicates with an entire bottle of asprin and a bottle of vodka, landing in the hospital and, subsequently, in therapy. The family doctor decides that the best place for her would be Claymoore, a mental institution just outside of town.

Susanna is convinced she doesn't belong, and is strongly opposed to Claymoore until she meets the people inside its walls: Georgina (Clea DuVall), a sweet pathological liar; Polly (Elizabeth Moss), a burn victim obsessed with the past; Daisy (Brittany Murphy), a strange girl with a deep, dark secret; and Lisa (Angelina Jolie), a wild child who becomes Susanna's best friend.

The trials and tribulations of Susanna's 18-month stay at Claymoore are intriguing and gripping, as well as heart-wrenching and tear-jerking. Perhaps it's just a chick thing, or even a slighty-crazy-chick thing, but I could completely identify with every one of the characters at one point or another. Georgina, Daisy, Polly, Susanna, even Lisa, who at times can be the world's biggest bitch. This movie had a deep meaning for me that I can't even fully explain.

It had its faults, certainly, but it was more flawless than flawed. The only reason I can think of you not to see this movie is if you are opposed to full-frontal male nudity (if only for a second). Ah, film... ;o)
