Kings Get:

Brent Price
Mike Bibby

Vitals
6'1", 190 lbs., Arizona

The Skinny:

Mike Bibby is a 23 year old point guard who has played with the Grizzlies his entire 3-year career. Bibby was originally selected by the Vancouver with 2nd pick of the 1998 draft. Bibby led all rookies in assists and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. Bibby's second season saw Mike increase his scoring and assist numbers. Bibby averaged 14.5 PPG and 8.1 APG in his sophomore season. Bibby's third season was his best one yet. He once again improved his scoring and assist numbers up to 15.9 PPG and 8.4 APG. Mike Bibby started every game of every season for the past years as a Vancouver Grizzly. The Grizzlies, looking to change the makeup of their team as they prepare to move to Memphis, called the Kings and the Bibby deal was consummated.

Strengths

Mike Bibby is a very good shooter. He shot 38% from downtown last season and has a career FG% of 44.5. Bibby knows how to find teammates. Even with a below-average supporting cast, Mike Bibby dished out 8+ assists per game in the last 2 seasons. He is a great leader and can run a team well from point guard.

Weaknesses

Mike Bibby, while better than Jason Williams on D, could still improve in that area. Although he saw a lot of postseason action in college, Bibby has yet to experience an NBA playoff game.

Outlook

Mike Bibby is projected to be the Kings starter at point guard, surrounded by Peja Stojakovic, Vlade Divac, and two spots to be determined by free agency. Having both the ability to play uptempo and controlled, he will run the team's offense. Expect a slight dropoff in Bibby's scoring production due to better scorers around him, but expecting 8+ assists from Bibby is realistic.

Grizzlies Get:

Nick Anderson
Jason Williams

Vitals
6'1", 190 lbs., Florida

The Skinny:

Jason Williams is a 25 year old point guard who has spent his entire 3-year career with the Sacramento Kings. Williams was originally drafted by the Sacramento Kings with the 7th pick of the 1998 draft. Williams immediately captured the attention of the NBA with his flair, flashy passes, and reckless play. Williams helped the Kings to a playoff berth and had Kings fans and all fans of the NBA imagining just how good this guy could get. Unfortunately, Williams' second year was disastrous. He averaged 3.7 turnovers per game while shooting a miserable 28.7% from downtown. Williams' problems only got worse after the season when he was hit with a 5-game suspension for not following the NBA drug policy. In 2000-2001 season, Williams often found himself on the bench and his frustration soon showed as he was hit with 2 fines from the league for behavior directed toward fans. The Kings, not necessarily looking to deal Jason, were approached by Vancouver about this deal and couldn't pass it up.

Strengths

Jason Williams has some of the best court vision in the league. He knows how to pass. He is a good free throw shooter and is basically unstoppable when attacking the basket. He has not yet fulfilled his potential meaning he may come alive in Vancouver/Memphis.

Weaknesses

Jason Williams is a bad defender. His shot selection has improved but he still is reluctant to drive the lane, instead settling for distant triples. He has yet to show he is intent on improving and displays a poor attitude if he doesn't feel he is being played enough.

Outlook

Jason Williams is projected to be the Grizzlies starting point guard, surrounded by Michael Dickerson, Shane Battier, Bryant Reeves, and Pau Gasol/Stromile Swift. Williams will fill seats in Memphis. He will run the point and could develop beautifully. Williams is likely to get improve his numbers as a member of the Grizzlies and this could result in a 13-14 points per game average for him.
