The Dugdale family can be traced back to the Norman conquest, and are listed in the Domesday Book, A.D. 1085. The Dugdale entry is listed under the demense (manor) of Robert Pictaveris (then Earl of Lancaster) who stationed one of his Barons, Ilbert De Lacy "among the kills of Clitheroe" to preserve law and order.
