Brothers, James and Charles Dugdale were business partners in Dugdale Brothers Wholesale Confectioners in England, and their father Henry also had an interest in the business. As agents for Fry's and Cadbury's Chocolates, they sold candy and biscuits, and there are still Dugdale mints and candied fruits to be found in England.
From a "local" History of unknown date: "Education in the 1850's comprised of two 'OLD DAMES' schools, or as we known them, infants' schools. Martha Moor's in Church Street and Martha Holgate's in Walmsgate: the Baptist School, Walmsgate, was held in the chapel: and the Butts National School. The headmaster at Butts at this time was Henry Dugdale. . . ."
From the November 1903 issue of the Slaidburn Parish Monthly Magazine, page 2: "Death, too, has visited two families well known to us. Mr. Henry Dugdale, who was our Schoolmaster at Slaidburn from 1851 to 1867, died at the end of September at the advanced age of 80 years. He was organist at the Parish Church, teacher of the Brass Band, Actuary of the Yorkshire Penny Bank, besides fulfilling many other duties connected with village life."
A current resident of Slaidburn, David Higham, advised that Henry Dugdale was Census Enumerator for Slaidburn in 1871. He was also kind enough to send a photo of Henry Dugdale, and to take photos of the house at 33 Church St, where Henry Dugdale lived, and the school in the background, where he worked.
David Higham is also a web designer and designed and manages an excellent Slaidburn web site.
A massive four-poster bed, handed down from generation to generation was left in England with James Dugdale, in order to keep it in the family. The headboard was carved with King Solomon's Temple. Today, it's whereabouts is unknown.
There is a legend in the family that one of the Dugdale men was killed in an accident on the estate of Lord Ribblesdale, and that his children were then raised with the Ribblesdale children.
