Al Lomas

Retired Diplomat Dies
Lomas, Alton Anderson “Al” - 73,
Sherbrooke, Guysborough County, died Saturday, June 17, 2000,
in St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital.
Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Alton and Mary (Anderson) Lomas.
He was educated in Halifax, KCS, Windsor and Dalhousie University.
After receiving his Master’s degree from Dalhousie University in 1950,
he served with the Halifax Rifles until 1952.
He was then a Master and cadet instructor at King’s College School.
He joined the Federal Foreign Trade Service in 1953,
serving in Ottawa, Detroit, Mexico City, Bruxelles, New York and Beijing.
He also served in Halifax with the Nova Scotia Department of Development
as a federal exchange officer and as secretary to the Council of Maritime Premiers.
His last post was as Director of the Ocean Industry Developement Office.
Upon his retirement to Sherbrooke in 1982,
he became a dedicated community volunteer, receiving the Canada 125 Medal
for service to his community and his country.
His many organizations include the St. Mary’s River Association,
the board of St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital, the St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital Auxiliary,
the Goldenville Historical Society, Branch 56 Royal Canadian Legion,
St. James Anglican Church, the Sherbrooke Village Commission,
Grandparents in the Classroom and Elderhostel.
He was a past president of the Central Nova Liberal Association
and ran as the federal candidate in 1984.
He is survived by his loving wife, the former Aleah Palmer,
Sherbrooke; his son, Andy and his wife Katy, San Francisco;
his daughter, Christie Ann and her husband Malcolm MacKenzie, Sherbrooke;
his grandchildren, Adam, Mary and Amelia, Sherbrooke;
Tony, Toronto; Sara, Carlton Place; and their mother , Karen;
step-grandchild, May MacKenzie, New Waterford; brother, Alex and his wife Sally, Ontario.
Also survived by a large extended family including his mother-in-law, Maude Palmer, Charlottetown;
several brothers and sisters-in-law,and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, in Ecum Secum Funeral Home, Sherbrooke.
There will be a Legion service at 7 p.m. Wednesday,
in the funeral home, all members are asked to attend.
Memorial service Thursday, June 22 at 2 p.m., in St. James Presbyterian Church,
Rev. Sandy Murray and Rev. David Curry officiating.
Burial in St. James Anglican Church Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to return to Al and Aleah’s home after the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
or charity of your choice.
