Alot of Sailor Moon is based on Mythology, including senshi powers. Some of them are a little haywire..but..well..you'll understand when you read. Email me if you find anything wrong.
Moon:The Goddess of the moon is Selene. Selene--Serenity, get it? Well at least to ME they sound kind of similar. Anyways, Selene was known for her countless love affairs. Usagi, has gone astray with other men too. Like Allen, Haruka (before she knew she was a girl), and other people like that. But Selene is best known for her eternal love for a sheperd boy named Endymion. Sound familiar? Yes, it's Mamarou's name as a prince/king! So Sailor Moon has a lot to do with her mythological background.
Mercury: Sailor Mercury and Hermes: God of trade and profit, merchants and travelers, he was also the messenger of the gods. Even though it looks like they barely have anything in common, they really do. Hermes was said to be very cunning and clever. Hermes was also credited for inventing a lot of stuff. And if you invent stuff, you have to be smart, and obviously Sailor Mercury is extremely intellegent. So don't let the god's purpose fool you...at least in this case.
Mars: Ares was the God of War. Even though you would think that Sailor Mars would probobly have nothing in common with this guy, think again. Ares was said to be very aggresive (since of coarse he's the god of war), and at times Rei can be very aggresive at times when she get's annoyed or sense's evil. Ares was one of the most prominent and worshipped gods, and as we know, Rei was idolized by many people for her personality and appearence. So Sailor Mars and Ares go well together.
Jupiter: In mythology, Jupiter was Zeus, who had the Lightning bolts. Jupiter's power being thunder is good, since Zeus has a very similar strength. Also, Zeus is very strong, and so is Makato. Sailor Jupiter has lots of support why she has Lightning as her power. Zeus was also said to like pretty woman, and Makato likes many handsome men, so you could say she was BOY CRAZY, as Zeus was WOMAN CRAZY. Sailor Jupiter and Zeus obviously have a lot in common.
Venus: Sailor Venus and her mythology equivalent go together alot. Venus' power is Love(yes, it is if you didn't realize that already), and Aphrodite is the Goddess of Love and her Roman equivalent is Venus. So it's pretty much self explanitory with the relationship between these two.
Pluto and Saturn: The reason I'm doing them together is because their case is strange. Sailor Pluto, has an equivalent of Hades who is God of the Underworld, while Sailor Saturn has Chronus who's God of Time. Pluto and Saturn got mixed up in a way, because Sailor Pluto's powers are Time, but that's not her mythology charactor. Same with Sailor Saturn, her power is like death, but that's not her mythology charactor. I'm always wondering how and why they got mixed up!
Uranus: Sailor Uranus, in mythology, had Uranus (both in roman and in greek) was god of the sky and the heavens. He married Gaea who was Mother Earth, and Sailor Uranus' attack "World Shaking" has to do with earth. Also Sailor Uranus' name Tenoh Haruka means "King of the Sky", which I guess, gives her some relationship with mythology.
Neptune: Neptune is Poseidon, who is God of the Sea. Sailor Neptune obviously is a perfect match, because Poseidon (Neptune's equivalent) is God of the Sea, and Sailor Neptune has powers regaurding water. Also Sailor Neptune's name Kaiou Michiru means "Mature Sea Goddess". Sailor Neptune as a person (Kaiou Michiru) doesn't really have any relationship with Poseidon.
