August 25, 2001 - Saturday
I had a very rude awakening this morning. At 8:15 a jackhammer started right outside my window. I couldn't believe it. I shouted a few obscenities that I won't repeat, and tried
to go back to sleep.
I got to work a few minutes earlier than usual and got ready to meet the challenges
of the day. [Translation: I got changed, ate my breakfast and read the newspaper.]
I had my usual 7 classes and they went quite well I think. I did my Casablanca lesson
in a couple of the courses and the students enjoyed it a lot. It is always interesting
how people translate some of the lines from the film.
After work, I did some paperwork and then I planned a couple of my lessons for next
week. It was quite interesting actually, and I didn't mind doing it on my own time.
I left the office and had the idea to get something to eat. I had planned to get
myself some ramen, but when I got to the shop I just kept going for some reason.
When I got to the corner to cross the street I realized that the soba shop was still
open and I decided to go in. This is a place that I see everyday on my way to work, but I've
never gone in. I went in tonight and had tempura soba. It was very good. I think
another time I might have something else.
When I arrived home I started to veg out. I'm quite tired, but have no wish to go
to bed yet! I'm crazy like that. I did watch Roswell and Dharma and Greg, plus
a bit of Countdown TV.
There was an earthquake in Osaka and Kyoto today. It sounds like it was quite strong
at the epicenter, around 5 on the Japanese scale, if I'm understanding what the TV
said. I hope no one was hurt.
Anyway, I'll likely go to bed soon. It's still hot so I don't know if I'll be able
to sleep, but I sure hope so! I hate summer in Japan. I know bears hibernate in
winter, well, I'd like to be a summer hibernator. Wake me when it's over!
Night night....and woe betide anyone or anything that wakes me up early tomorrow!
