Get Carter
I like Sylvester Stallone. I know he isn't generally considered a good actor, but
I like him. He usually has a certain charisma, that makes him likable, even when
he isn't. I heard that he was doing a remake of Michael Caine's "Get Carter", and
I wasn't sure if I'd like it. To be honest, I haven't seen the original, I'd like to but
I haven't found it yet.
This movie tells the story of John Carter (Stallone). His brother Ritchie just died
in a drunk driving accident and Stallone goes to visit his sister in law and his
niece. Carter is suspicious about his brother's death and starts to look into it.
At the same time he starts to build bridges with his sister in law and his niece. He investigates
more and more and finds a very nasty reason for his brother's death. Carter isn't
a regular hero though, he's an enforcer for a bookmaker. He's a thug in a suit with a few brains. He's an anti-hero.
I believe the original Get Carter was an English movie. Well, in this version many
of the supporting actors are British actors. Michael Caine is even there, along
with Alan Cumming and Miranda Richardson. Mickey Rourke is there, in his normal
non-acting way. (Note to Hollywood...Why oh why do you give this man acting jobs? He hasn't
done any acting in years!)
I watched the movie carefully, but even afterwards I can't say that I know whodunnit
or why, but I found the movie to be quite stylish despite the over-used quick cut
speed up trick. Why do movies have to look like rock videos to succeed these days?
So, should you see this film? Well, if you like Stallone, or if you feel that any
movie with Michael Caine is worth spending money on, then yes, you should. If you
aren't anxious to see this one, wait until it comes out on video. On the Stella
Starstruck scale I give it a ** 1/4 stars out of five.
Other Stallone films worth watching are Cliffhanger, Oscar (my personal favourite
of his) and Copland.
