BIG APPLE ADVENTURE The V Man in New York City
February 2001
New York City. The Big Apple. Whatever you call it, you cannot argue with the fact that it is probably the greatest city in the World. From the very first time I stepped foot onto the streets of this great city many years ago, I have been intrigued by it's juxtaposition of urban splendor and human diversity. There's no other city like it in the World!
Times Square, Rockefeller Plaza, the Empire State Building, Broadway...these are things other cities have tried to imitate, but never duplicate.
Although I must admit, today's New York, particularly Manhattan, bears little resemblance to the grimy, dirty, squalor filled "Taxi Driver" type of New York that I knew as child, thanks in large part to the cleanup efforts of Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Today, you can walk down 42nd street without being harassed by countless panhandlers, street hookers and their pimps. The "new" 42nd street is now filled with the bright flashing lights of upscale establishments, fancy hotels and the Disney store!
Walk down to Times Square and buy half price tickets to Broadway shows at the TKTS booth. Then walk down to Rockefeller Plaza, past Radio City Music Hall, and watch Matt Lauer and Katie Couric behind the "Today show" window, then while you're at it, visit the NBC store and purchase some NBC merchandise.
Take the N or R train downtown to the financial district and take your picture by the huge bull statue at the end of Wall street, then afterwards, walk down to Battery park to take the ferry into Liberty Island or Ellis Island.
Drive up to Chinatown and dine at some of the more exotic restaurants in New York, then walk on over to Soho and mingle with the bohemians.
Take a taxi cab ride, driven by a friendly New York taxicab driver, down to Pier 12 on the east side and snap some photos of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, then while you're there, take the Circle line ferry which will take you for a very informative three hour tour around the island of Manhattan...
As you can see, there is so much to do in New York! I was there over the past weekend, mainly to attend the big motorcycle show sponsored by Cycle World magazine and Toyota trucks at the Jacob Javits Convention center, but I did manage to get some sightseeing done while I was there.
And of course, no visit to New York would be complete without watching one or more of the many musicals and plays in the theater district! I had the opportunity to watch a great, great musical called Jane Eyre at the Brooks Atkinson theater, and I have to say that despite it's bad reviews in the New York Times, I Loved it! I highly recomend it, so go see it!
