The Building of the Garage

I have always wanted a garage and finally it has happened. It is great to see it being built and anticipating moving my tools and such into it. To build it we had to have a place that was not on the side of a mountain. The most level spot was at the end of the driveway.

I had to remove a large pine tree, a large oak and a small oak. The pine was 75 feet high. The oak was about 50 feet high. I sure hated to see them go because I have lost so many trees since we bought this property. We use the wood for our heat but it is much nicer to have the trees to look at. We had to remove the stumps to excavate for the foundation. Since the garage will not be on level ground the plans had to be engineered. The foundation on the back corner will be about five feet high.

Once the foundation was in the rock to back fill it was delayed. The framing was started and the garage began to look like a garage. The walls were framed and the roof trusses put on. The roof was laid, siding put up and windows installed.

Finally the rock arrived and was put inside. It took two truck and trailer loads plus one truck load to backfill so the rebar could be laid for the floor. The floor was poured and the garage was turned over to me to finish. I primed, painted, insulated and put up sheetrock. We had to have a truck and trailer bring in a load of road base to repair the driveway.

Now I can move all my tools from the basement. A job that took lots of time and work but now I can finally have a place to work. That's right, the garage is my shop and will not likely see a vehicle except when it is being worked on.
